Some of us have met the devs, played with them, been friends with them. Eve has a somewhat small community, that is for the most part full of amazing people. It is only natural that we care about our own. Sure some of it may be a bit over the top, but I'll take that over not caring any day.
I'll join the chorus asking CCP, don't take my fancy names away from me!

We care because he was a key figure in nullsec rebalancing starting with the jump changes and being continued after Rhea.
He was part of the team which brought in Dominion sov. Love him or hate him, the current and past dynamics of nullsec and the years of stagnation and super coalitions are partly his fault. |

Which is to say it might still slide into the Pacific one day WHEN the right magnitude of earthquake comes along -- and it will.
NOT REALLY seeing how that's an improvement over an island in the middle of the North Atlantic that is essentially floating on a bubble of magma, but "OK".
Folks can blame him for whatever they want -- I hope the next generation of devs have some brass balls amongst themselves, too.

Dublin is a place where Barcelona people goes when they don't have anywhere else left to go. It's like "shall I move to Kamchatka, Reykjavik or Dublin?". If you notice, that means that even Brussels looks like a better plan than Dublin.
Specially since Dublin is bloody full of Spaniards; there's something wrong when you go hit the redhead of your life and she's Galician!!

So you are saying he was responsible for some of the biggest widest publicised fights of the MMO world, that got out to the mainstream Media even? Yes, Dominion Sov didn't work out quite how they anticipated. GSF are kinda very good at breaking game systems with metagame play after all. But blaming him for the stagnation caused by players always playing the metagame and not simply shooting stuff inside the game.... Without giving him credit for all the good fights and great times that came with it. Not cool. |

Personally I could never forgive him for the anomaly nerf, and the destruction of 100's of man hours of work and my entire corp that went with it.
Gruelingly, I respect that he usually popped up with the most controversial changes and pushed them through no matter what.
Bitter much? Perhaps.

We need a new robust system that uses one framework for all assets in space. - we want to create more interesting stuff in systems and allow people to fight in different places and put content all over the universe. We want to move pos off moons, create a structured scalable system and allow people to populate space with awesome stuff. - the system needs to be as simple as possible and intuitive so that people can use it without having to have an double masters and a doctorate in astrophysics and spaceship construction.

We care because he was a key figure in nullsec rebalancing starting with the jump changes and being continued after Rhea. No, his team was. He might of been head, or had the basic idea but with out without him the work should continue as scheduled in the way it was chosen. This is how things work. A new team head might tweek or change the vision, but usually once a project is approved a certin way the work keeps going no matter who is there. Now if CCP Seagull left then yea things would prolly change, but the point of a working group is to have everyone who is going to touch stuff lay out exactly what they are planning. And you still follow the roadmap. So as I said, rockstar status.
And if that person is one of the people working on extending the roadmap? Are you assuming that's complete and will never require changes?
Are you an accountant? Seriously you sound like the sort of person that thinks outsourcing an experienced developer's role is a good idea as you can get three inexperienced people for the same price. Reality says no. |

no, it just took away some of the inherent advantages of being a grief-monkey. Aggressors in EVE still have it far, far too easy. It makes the game a joke. |

Greyscale was in large part responsible for many decisions that, how should I say this, "simplified" the game." You mean changes that a lot of people like? The only ones who like them are those who think they make a difference, and those who take advantage of them for entertainment. Kill rights and bounty-hunting could have been so much more, but weren't. And you know what? That seems to define a lot of EVE changes recently. The people who seem to do the best jobs at CCP today are those who are working on things like ship rebalancing, usability, and artistic/visual improvements. Everything else is full of oversimplification and catering to the lowest common denominator.
It really should be noted that crimewatch really isn't more simple, more intuitive or less advantageous to the mean people than what it replaced. 95% of the complaints about the previous system were based on a total lack of knowledge about how the mechanics actually worked among the masses of people who don't actually play in highsec. That same ignorance still exists, there are legitimately people who still think you can't shoot neutral reps even though that was never the case to begin with.
5 hose same people also have no idea how crimewatch actually did affect combat in highsec, as was evidenced by the sudden outburst of wars by nullsec entities that happened as soon as the changes were made and which ended when they figured out what the ally system actually meant for them. There is a huge discrepancy between perception and reality where those mechanicsame are concerned. |

Called it.
To say CCP Greyscale was a polarizing figure is I think accurate. While I did not always agree with what he has done as a dev, I can say he does listen to feedback.
I have been eagerly awaiting future changes to Eve-O that have his name stamped on them because I knew they would rock the boat and perhaps make a real significant difference. Unfortunately, this will never happen.

Most of the complexity of the old system was simply gratuitous and unnecessary, as the old 43-page document describing its mechanics proved: when a game company has to hire consultants to describe one of its own mechanics to it, there's a problem.
But the biggest improvement the new Crimewatch brings is a flagging system that doesn't create large, computationally expensive dependency chains. The new Crimewatch is much easier on the servers.
What's remarkable is how CCP was able to streamline the rules and greatly improve the performance without changing nearly as much as they could have. The removal of flag propagation closed some hilarious loopholes, but that's most of the impact.
