The Rorqual has been largely forgotten. In its current state is has been replaced nearly completely by POS mods. Some have found edge uses for them as drone ships, but we can do better. They should, thematically:
Have a use for their clone vat bay. It is an uncommon ability and should be highlighted.
Involve mining in some fashion.
In my reimagining the Rorqual becomes much tougher. In siege, it can mine from a moon when on-grid of the warpin of the planet around which the moon orbits. It can mine out a moon's 2-3 day supply of materials in a brief amount of time (hours?) when in siege. The moon becomes available for the moon mining POS mod (or another Rorq drill fest) after that time period.
In essence, it is an expensive ship pinned in place when it is mining a moon, can can be used to grief inattentive null/lowsec groups while also serving as a catalyst for fights when caught.
This would not increase the amount of extractable materials from the moon, just allow it to be extracted in a briefer amount of time and then remain in a depleted state until it regenerated.
The activity would be incredibly risky in a system where someone's actively using the space, and could be relatively safe stealing in 1hr increments (so the API doesn't reveal your presence) in systems where people don't use the space. After that it's just tweaking the collection rate so that it pays, oh, 120-200mil/hour and you have an activity people will do. By placing the Rorq on-grid of the planet instead of the moon, it cannot be protected by a friendly tower.
But then we get to the clone vat bay. We can both make things interesting for wormholers and make the Rorqual useful for commerce raiding. Give them back an SMA capable of holding 8-10 cruisers and limit them to cruiser-sized ships and below. Change the way the clone vat bay works so that you can jump to the Rorq when in a pod, either from a station or in space. The Rorq must be in siege for this to work. When you jump to it, it stores your current clone in the Rorq and replaces it with the previously installed pod floating next to the ship -- you can then board one of the stored cruisers. The Rorq ceases to be a source of free jump clones, but you can move the Rorq behind enemy lines and then jump people to it for commerce raiding. The mechanic makes it not a hot drop, but just people moving.
Rorq under attack? Jump good bros from anywhere in New Eden to your Rorq and board the stored ships to defend it. Your session change timer protects the pod before the reship.
Want to screw with renters and don't like wormholes? Jump a Rorq in ahead of time to a sleepy system as a base of operations, and then pod over to board your raiding ships to harass people. This method allows for limited damage projection -- you cn only use the ships you have pre-positioned, but can get the players to the fight.
This would also throw a bone to the wormhole community, since the change in mechanic would also let you swap clones in a wormhole (same system only). |
