Lately there has been something of a surge of ganking in high security space, often including the tactic of bumping the target (to keep them from escaping) while ransoming them for a hefty sum. After losing one of my own ships to this sort of attack, I wrote a quick guide to one of the ways to get out of such a ransom situation:
http://www.thewholefrigate.com/2015/01/psa-bumped-before-gank-safe-log-off.html (tl;dr: use the "safe log off" and keep them talking while it ticks down)
This is good for newbies and veterans alike; from the people i have talked to, it is not an especially obvious solution to the situation. I hope this helps you folks not lose ships or ransom money! Also I hope it helps forum warriors have an extra response to "this is so unfair, there was nothing I could do against those mean gankers!"
Cheers!

The obvious trick here is not to tip them off because if you just kill the client, you pop out of local and they know then to either gank you there and then, or agrees you with a nubie ship which will keep you there for I5 minutes.

Yep. That's the advantage of safe log-off. As I said, the situation in which you're being bumped and ransomed is already an extremely bad situation, and this is just a mitigating tactic that might work. If the gankers up their game and forget ransoming you, or aggress you with a noobship, you're still in trouble.
I will have another blog post soon about how to not get into the troublesome situation in the first place.

That's a little counterproductive and not much fun. Unless you are a station trader, of course.
Anyway, good PSA. A last ditch strategy that not many know about. If it saves one freighter, it was worth the time to write that blog.

Mr Epeen It would have certainly saved my freighter. That guy spend a long while blabbing about it, and to top it off, his gank failed (left me at half struct). I had to wait around for 20 minutes while his Catalysts reshipped. There were definitely multiple instances where I would have had 30 seconds to log off, but I only realized I could have done that after I lost the ship. Oh well.

As a miner, plenty of systems you never see a ganker in.
As a freighter pilot, easy solution, use a web alt and laugh at the bumpers as you are in warp before they even spot you. Hell, both my freighters are ALWAYS accompanied by webbing alt.

Also is it incoming or outgoing targeting that stops safe logoff? The wiki page says "you have a target lock", which is sort of ambiguous. I clearly remember when testing the safe logoff that I could not be targeting something else, but I have not tested it with someone targeting me.

The failure of this is, it's trivial for another person to abort the safe logoff. Bumpers who know what they're doing will tag you with a shot from a newbie ship.
At that point, you can't safe logoff. From the wiki:
Quote: You cannot be safely logging off while: You have aggression from players or NPCs You cannot initiate a safe logoff while any of these things are happening, and if they happen once the countdown is running, it will be aborted.
So, newbies, just remember this "defense" isn't a sure thing, and us gankers have known how to stop it for a long while.
Really though, the best defense is to be prepared. If I have the choice between gunning down an anti-tanked freighter, and hitting a tanked one, I'll pick untanked any day. You don't have to be the fastest gazelle on the savannah, you just have to be faster than the slowest one.
It isn't really hard, but I think there are customers that you can lose in a good way and there's customers that you can lose in a bad way. If people come in and fundamentally don't like EVE Online, then I think that might be a good way of losing customers. . -á--CCP Soundwave

So you tag it with a rookie ship and bring concord on grid. Well we can pull concord off the grid you say yes but by that time the aggression timer is gone and a new safe log attempt is possible. Its a good trick to **** off those gankers lol +1

Hmz
If it takes you more then 5 minutes to get CONCORD off grid, you are doing it wrong in the first place and don't deserve the kill.
Luckily most competent people can easily pull it off before the timer runs out. Not to mention, it abort the timer, which can then only be started from the start again when your combat flag ends. So, it is actually quite easy to pull off with the noob-ship tagging.

Why are you offering advice on your opinions of how to be safe in a freighter in NCQ&A?
New players cannot fly freighters, they require Advanced Spaceship Command (a capital ships skill) to level 5. Now if you had some advice on how to keep an Iteron safe in highsec, that might be of use to people in this forum.
As for how to be somewhat safe - it's pretty simple. Avoid Uedama and Niarja by taking alternate routes through lowsec (after scouting them). If you aren't willing to fly a freighter through quiet low, you sure as hell should not be flying them through much more dangerous systems.

It applies to all slow ships that can be kept from warping via bumping. As I understand, this includes many/most mining barges, and (less relevant to newbies) many battleships.
Those are just after-the-fact justifications, though, I had not actually considered posting it here might be inappropriate. I will try to pay more attention to that in the future.

Bumping can be done anywhere.
Is legal.
And is nothing more then ramming your ship into the target's ship to push it out of alignment for his warp.
To enter warp, you have to be within 5 degree angle of your destination, so if people keep pushing you into other direction, you will never enter warp.

The trolls always seem to figure out a new way to bend the rules I guess.
But that's besides the point.
Doesn't the ship doing the bumping also get pushed around a little bit? Does it take more than one ship to keep someone from aligning correctly? Can't a ship being bumped cancel their warp and attempt to juke, or is that out of the question with the larger, slower ships?

hahha
Bumping is as ancient as the game.
The faster your target can realign, the more bumpers you need. If you have something as big and slow as a freighter, it doesn't take that much to keep it from alignment.
Technically, yes you could cancel warp, and try to warp to a different thing, but a good bumper will make sure you are bumped into a direction without a destination (unless you have a private safespot in said direction)

Webbing alt or a scout to look for telltale signs of previous ganks (CONCORD on grid, flashy red locals, why are there 40 pilots in a normally quiet system?) goes a long way. If I ever have to cart a bunch of goods in a ship that just screams "SHOOT ME!", an alt is more than worth the cost. |

Saying "oh, you just scout the route and you're fine". Never mind that requiring a buddy or an alt (so suddenly hauling is a two man job?), who in their right mind would ever want to waste an evening on getting a freighter 15 jumps to Jita? If I wanted to do something extremely boring and suicide inducing I would continue studying for the rest of the day.
I can confirm first hand that the guide above does not work, since if you are getting bumped you are probably targeted and that prevents you from logging safely.
So after finally subbing my account after 1 year of inactivity, I lost my beloved freighter after 2 days and now realize I can no longer conduct my trading as I have done since I started playing this game. This seems as an extremely dumb mechanic, as I now need to sub another account just for scouting&webbing.
CCP once again managed to come up with a mechanic that ruins the game for all those who don't want to pvp, and once again reaffirmed the notion that Iceland should do us all a favor and get swallowed up by the ocean. |

Well back in my day it would take a fleet of battleships to take down a freighter, so I could easily transport 1-1,5bil worth of stuff without getting ganked. This time I suddenly found myself being bumped out of range of the gate, unable to align and very surprisingly for me - unable to log out. I don't know who came up with that brilliant idea, but that person should be gently but firmly dumped into a volcano. |

A. You sound terribly mad about some space pixels. B. You sound very amazed that CCP is adding PvP functions to a game that at its core is a PvP game. *Yes, any form of player interaction is player vs player*
A. It's not pixels, it's thousands of hours of my life I have invested into this game. If you are too cool to give a **** about something you put time and effort in, then perhaps you are one of those useless individuals whose time is not worth anything.
B. I am amazed because this PvP functionality (it can't even be called that, it's just abuse of faulty mechanics) is being added to high sec. If you want to PvP - go to null sec. But no, all you leet bittervet oldfags camping gates **** your pants at the prospect of nullsec pvp, your notion of pvp is ganking carebears without CONCORD intervention.
C. Don't write posts in the form of lists, they make you look like a faget. |

B)high sec is relatively safe, not safe . if I want to push your **** in , I can and I'll damn well do it in whatever part of neweden I see fit because the game explicitly allows for it. you have to prevent me from doing so.
One of the corner stones this game is built upon is the idea that someone can always ruin your day the moment you get complacent. Regardless of where you are.
If you want safety I can recommend this game for you, seems more your speed

You broke the first rule of EVE
1. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
And lol at being mad at the entirety of Iceland over the loss of an internet spaceship.

Freighters have fitting options now, if you choose to not fit for EHP tank you choose to be more of a target. Everyone has to make comprises when it comes to fitting ships: a mission runner can't just only fit dps, he has to fit tank. Normal pvp ships can't only fit for dps, he has to fit tank and tackle. Mining ships can't just only fit for yield, they also have to fit tank (but generally don't, and thus end up crying). And the same goes for haulers, you can't just only go for cargo and/or speed, you HAVE to fit tank.
In your specific case you left when freighters did not have fitting choices and came back when they "suddenly" did so for you it's pretty much bad luck.
But normally the above really is the crux of the problem: people not willing (or even contemplating) to move away from max performance to allow for increased safety which then, inevitably, goes sour. The difference between a "proper" EVE player and a carebear is their reaction to a situation like this. Throwing your toys out of the pram isn't helping anyone but folks like us, giggling at the rage. Instead just take a deep breath, dust yourself off, analyse why and how it went wrong and adapt.
Get some sand and start building another castle.
p.s. you were moving plex.... Lets just say that of all the dumb things to do in EVE that's pretty much near the top of the list. |

Now, I didnt test it myself, but dev blogs here state that safe log off is not possible if, among other things, ' You have a target lock or are targeted'.

Until you tell us what really happened anything else you say is irrelevant.

A. Single logi on mail - NOT a gank, something else happened..
B. He was transporting PLEX - sorry but by that you made yourself a target and were dumb enough to undock..
