Don't holler at me stuff like "OMG YOU DIDN'T PLAY THE GAME SO SHUT UP". I did play the game for 4 years. Now I will tell you why the game is bad.
SINGLEPLAYER
- Devs fail to create original, good retro graphics. - Mobs have horrible pathfinding, as most will run into walls / lava just to kill you. - Singleplayer is fun, but it becomes very stale and repetitive, as you can get diamond gear after two to three hours of gameplay. - Notch always promises a ton of new content, but fails to deliver. - Devs are adding a ton of boring, useless content that does nothing else than confuse you. - Strongholds are more boring than nullsec, as they contain useless loot. - Ender dragon fight is not challenging, but tedious and boring. - Imagination is not the limit. You will get bored of building big structures, as it is pointless. - The only way to not get bored to death once you get diamond gear is to restart your world.
MULTIPLAYER - Minecraft fanbase is composed of about 90% angry 12 year-old kids that are really mean, butthurt, over-defensive and foul-mouthed (got called a f**got and a p**sy just because I said that MC is getting boring). It really sucks to play team-based servers because a lot of your team-mates are angry, immature and ********. - Servers are horrible. They're filled with hundreds of plug-ins and spammy, brightly-coloured chat that will make your eyes bleed. The sheer amounts of messaging makes it impossible to read your friend's messgae, because hundreds of other texts are appearing in the chat window every second. - Servers have the bad habit of giving you over-enchanted diamond gear and a sh*tload of food that makes the server unchallenging and boring as you get to kick butt on day one. - Factions are terribad, as there are a lot of no-lifers that donate to the server and get tons of money and exclusive doner gear. This makes the Factions brawl unbalanced, as if you're a noob faction you will get raped hard. - Prison servers are not prison servers. They have no guards and no wardens, and they don't even look like a prison. They look like enormous, happy playgrounds that are called "Prison" so they can attract tons of players. - Immature staff. Server staff is made of a ton of troll-some adults or frustrated teenagers that like to pick on newcomers that come to their server. Got banned for four years from a server because I was promised a Mod post but then the admin told me to f**k off for no reason. I was a trusted player and tons of people would call for me, and I would come in their aid. After getting banned, I received the ban message "Get the f**k out". - Language. The little kiddies think they're tough because they're sitting behind a monitor. Any attempt of trying to start a civilized, calm and non-offensive argument usually ends up as a curse-cauldron and a ton of annoying squeakers calling you a lot of mean things in the chat or screaming at you on the server's Teamspeak. - Over-appreciated YouTube channels. Some are good, but others are boring and downright stupid. They present the same servers or subjects on their channels over and over and over again, and it becomes stale. - Forum community. Any attempt to contradict somebody's opinion on the forums will give you a ban / a huge noob-pile of cussing.
RECEPTION AND OTHERS -Overrated score. Minecraft has earned a 9/10 from IGN and labeled as "Amazing". Anybody who thinks that Minecraft deserves a score of over 5/10 needs to see a doctor immediately. In my opinion, Minecraft is simply a boring, stale and repetitive game that is overrated, it deserves a 2/10. I think that the 9/10 was given by the critics so they won't be killed by an angry mob of 12 year-olds. - The sheer stupidity. My sister plays every night with a friend of hers. For security purposes, we'll call her C. So, C has a problem with me and she always calls me a "******" and tells me to go away. Why? Because I stole 8 diamonds from her 3 years ago. God, 8 diamonds can be easily replaced. Every mining run, I get about 30 diamonds. And if you're upset over this childish game, then you are a no-lifer and you urgently need to exit your basement and go outside a bit. - Hackers and grief-squads. Many plug-ins safeguard the precious ore from X-Rayers and spambots, but they fail at keeping out the relentless, real hackers that wreck everything and destroy your stuff. Mods seem to not care about many griefers, and they just shrug their shoulders and tell you to deal with it.
The only satisfaction I get from this crappy thing that people dare call a good game is that I enjoy the shader mods, they look so pretty!
PS: Notch didn't even make this an original game, he was inspired from previous sucky games and he got an award for that...

The funny thing is that hosting is dirt cheap these days so the guy running the server is definitely making some money there.

So, you're a bounty hunter.
No, that ain't it at all.

Minecraft is pretty fun in and of itself, but there's only a limited amount of things you can do and experience before it gets repetetive and boring. What Notch could've done is make it a MMO with 3-4 servers for the entire globe max, and then institute a subscription and some sort of ingame progression. People tend to get attached to things they paid to build up over time. Of course, to facilitate a maximum amount of people playing, there should be a way to trade ingame resources to other people securely for an item that extends your sub by one month. |

Interesting points, yet some of the points you describe as "bad" are actually some of its strengths.
On community, really? I mean, SERIOUSLY? An EVE Player saying that is like someone in CAOD saying GD is bad
Rest is a matter of perspective.
After all these years I still have a TON of my world to explore. Some people actually enjoy it for that, not all servers are bad either.
Perhaps the game has run its usefulness to you, but to many others it is quite entertaining. I have played a lot and introduced the game to much younger relatives too, also it-¦s a blast seeing the joy of a kid receiving a real life foam minecraft sword off JINX and a girl receiving "Diamond" Jewelry from his uncle that lives abroad and brings neat gifts at least once a year, they have awesome merchandise for kids!
It-¦s a game for a certain demographic, perhaps you are no longer into that one?
Or simply got as much as you could out of it and need something else?
I also find this thread a bit suspicious, it-¦s clear you find the game boring. Perhaps like eve you just need to leave it away for a while?
Anyway, hope you find a better game to quell your uneasiness and fill your leisure time with lots of entertainment!
Cheers!

no csm on that sandbox the beautifull thing about the game minecraft is that it was make by aguy who grew up too poor to play computer games in a country where fuel poverty would = death without being able to make your own tools and hunt or grow your own food
I never fancied minecraft due to tha fact in fantasy games i prefer too much undead npcs for all hte magic weapons and go dragon hunting.
However its more about the team play for me i still have an extensive contacts list on steam of folk i befriended playing counter strike source.

too much blood in my cafiene system
its all about the mods as a pc release you can mod your game theres plenty tools out there
however the playstation and xmox releases are far more restrictive
tech tree goes normal > enchanted wodden swords > diamond armour
tekkit modpack was the best few modpacks very cutomisable you could build solar power coal power ect however the mod witters keep bringing out new stuff
Its a lot of fun to play with a few friends but pvp in minecraft favours the inudtrious player its impossible without the quantum armor whic takes too long and they detroy your bases
wiht the towny and mmminecraft mopacks it turns into a curious hybrid of eve online with drunk orcs table dancing

for the PC, yeah. Modded minecraft is the way to go. I personally prefer the Direwolf20 pack for 1.6.4 with a few tweaks. Vanilla Minecraft gets fairly stale sooner or later, but the various modpacks do add in more replayability to it. As far as hours of play vs dollars spent though I have to say it's probably the best game purchase I've ever made. Not even Skyrim comes close to the time I've sunk into Minecraft over the years.
A friend had his kid asking to play it online and both myself and my roommate immediately told him to tell his kid NO. The public servers are toxic places for the most part, overfull of foul mouthed loinspawn. I recommend a two week visit to any of them for anyone who's still on the fence about having kids. It's a strong argument for the use of condoms.
It is dark here. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Hey guys,
Nice convo you got here.
I represent EDU Gaming (www.edu-gaming.com) and I'd just like to suggest the wider applications for Minecraft that you haven't discussed yet.
As well as the casual gameplay, Minecraft has huge applications in education. Teachers across the globe are bringing Minecraft into the classroom to teach a whole variety of topics ranging for basic problem solving to more specific subjects like physics, modern languages, and even art.
Now I know you may say that you don't care about any of this, but think about it this way... As a student, would you rather be sat in a classroom reading from a textbook or collaborating with your peers in an interactive way on Minecraft? If you have kids, what would you prefer for them?
There has been a dramatic paradigm shift in education over recent years where students are being encouraged to collaborate and apply knowledge in the classroom rather than simply absorb information. This is a complete U-turn from when I was at school and I expect the same can be said for many of you. Today homework often entails watching a YouTube video or similar when the basic knowledge is gained and this is then applied in the classroom with support from the teacher.
I would suggest that the wider applications of Minecraft make it a truly awesome game. At EDU Gaming we are exploring applications for other games as well such as Eve Online |

Depends on how much information there is, really. Don't get me wrong, practical application of the subject matter is good. Oftentimes the problem is that there's not enough matter in the curriculum. No matter how much you cater to the lower end, there'll always be people unable to learn properly. |

I agree that the curriculum should be expanded upon but that's another discussion
And yes, although there will always be some students that have difficulty with learning, game-based learning has been shown to offer one of the best methods for allowing students to learn at their own pace. Being able to take on challenges individually in your own game means that you don't necessarily have to keep up with the rest of the group in order to keep on track. Unfortunately, in traditional methods it can sometimes be the case that struggling students simply drop off the radar. |

I really support this. :) I saw the video about the minecraft teacher. Well eve might be a bit too harsh for grade students...I am 14 and I often cry myself to sleep when I get blapped by a 30 man gatecamp.

Lol, I remember this well and I feel your pain!
That said, Eve does have a lot of educational potential that shouldn't be passed up on. Here are just a few examples that we have been talking about on EDU Gaming:
- Math
- Finance and Economics
- Using spread sheets
- Using APIs
- Political Anthropology
- Team management
- Art
You may have noticed our other thread currently running a competition for Eve Online looking at art and it's use in game advertising and promotions.
With the prize of a Plex I'd say it's worth taking a look.
