All this fantastic tech around us, and some items don't "stack"? I get the reality of it... you don't want a pile of drones in some dusty corner, you tug on a fin and the rest all come tumbling down on you. But I'm pretty sure we'd be looking at a computer screen, not actually wandering around in the cargo hold every time we want to find an item.
Or am I missing something?

Assuming you're asking up-front why some items are not stacking, please check;
- Are the items repackaged? (right-click > repackage). Unpackaged items do not stack
- Are they damaged / used? Things like laser crystals get "used" and then cannot be stacked
- Are they exactly the same 'type'? For example T1 and T2 items don't stack, likewise named/meta items.

The post was generally sarcasm, though. Any item on a screen should show a total, packaged or not (imho).

Thanks! There is something to be said for the idea of knowing you have (for example) a hundred 3.2 litre smallblock V8 engines in stock - but it's also worth knowing that 80 are in pristine factory condition and that the other 20 have been used - of course it would also be worth knowing that three of them are fire damaged, four have done two-hundred-thousand miles and the other fourteen have only been run in but...

I absolutely get that. It would still be fewer lines than listing each engine individually.

The technical explanation is just that: Each "unpackaged" item is considered unique, and this is necessary so that the game can keep track of what ship is fitted with which modules etc.. If this weren't the case, then you could end up having two Megathrons in your hangar, but the game wouldn't know which one was fitted with what, or whether they both had 23.7% hull damage, and so on. Works the same for items. One T2 afterburner could have lots of heat damage, while the other had none, and the game would not be able to determine which one you were trying to repair.
Just imagine if everyone you knew was named "Bob", and you were only ever allowed to identify them as "Bob" - not even "the Bob with long black hair", or "Bob who was here an hour ago" - simply "Bob". It would be chaos. Nobody would know who you were talking to, or about.
That's why only identical items can be stacked, and only repackaged items are identical.

I prefer Jacob Holland's analogy since he's talking about the same items with different parameters.
I do agree that assembling/repackaging items is a bit lame, all pristine items should behave like packaged items imo. Next to that it would be nice if the background of an item would become red when it's damaged, the more damaged it is, the more intense its red background is. This way you can easily see what items are damaged (Crystals are also damaged) and need repairing or needs to be replaced soon.
OP, don't forget you can search items by name which can save you some scrolling.
