I was on a storyline courier mission, on the return trip after having picked up the item I needed. I got killed at a gatecamp, and lost the item. Is there any way to get the mission item back? I thought maybe after a downtime it'd be back in the original pickup location, but it's not. I'd really hate to have to fail a storyline mission and take the faction standing hit. Should I petition a GM ingame, or is there another way?

Mission runners are not exempt from PvP in lowsec/nosec, as EVE is not "single player" game... well, unless you are a mission-runner NPC corp hi-sec carebear and don't draw too much attention to yourself (so you get suicide-ganked in hisec).
Losing a storyline mission item is NOT petitionable, is actually expectable, and the ONLY way to get it back is to either buy it back from who looted your "death can" (if it survived the balst and he picked it up), or to buy it from somebody else who either failed the mission or killed somebody else carying it.
Other than that, no other way. __ Always question everything. Including yourself. |

Most courier items are (or at least where many moons ago when I did them) non-specific. That means you can buy it on the market and turn it in. This wll cost you some isk, but losing the collateral and standing from failing the mission will probably hurt more.

It was a transaction and salary log, and was a specific item. Guess that's what I get for not being more careful... Thanks anyway.

From what I remember, you dont actually take a faction standing hit for failing or declining a storyline mission.

Well, I think it says "specific item" but is in fact a generic item. Not 100% sure though. __ Always question everything. Including yourself. |

iirc it is indeed a specific item, as I've had missions that say "specific item" to a normal npc goods item, thus trying to complete the mission with buying the item from npc would not work. So the specific item in question most likely has a special ID even though it is of the same type as the npc item.
