How would these items rate in importance for running Eve well -- specifically increasing FPS?
Can anyone who gets decent framerates post thier system configuration along with their usual fps?

First of all it's your graphics card that counts when it comes to FPS. You can have tons of memory and the best processor there is, but if you have a crappy graphics card, you still don't get good FPS. Simply get the most recent and best specced graphics card from nVidia or ATi that you can afford.
After that, having enough memory will also help. 1 GB or more is recommended. Use dual channel, it really makes a difference.
And then you need a processor that can throw in enough weight to drive that graphics card and use that memory. Getting the fastest one is not really necessary, as long as you get a decent one. Try to avoid the cheaper versions (Semprons and Celerons) and go for the real stuff: AMD Athlon64 or Intel Pentium 4 / Core Duo.
Also make sure that your power supply unit can handle all this, and that you have a case that cools well.

Wrong! For other games, specifically FPS's its defo true but for eve CPU and Ram will have a much greater effect on your fps...

Have to agree with 4rc4ng3L, EvE is extremely processor hungry. You can have SLI, 4gb memory, but if you have a Intel Celeron as the engine, eve is going to go now where in a hurry!
I have 4 computers running eve, and the duel cores produce the best FPS in space, and one of them has lesser graphics capability then one of the a single core.
Average fps with one of the lower grade cpu is 50 to 70 fps. And the best with the duel cores is 200+ in space, someone may have more but i find it useable
Hope you find what you need Necrosmith

Eve is massively processor dependant. A slow gfx card or lack of memory can slow it down, but the processor is the really critical component.
You don't need a spectacularly fast graphics card. A cheap GeForce 6600 or 7300GS will do fine unless you have some huge LCD screen that needs to run at 1600x1200 or something, and 1GB of memory is good enough.
But processor grunt is the important bit. Celerons are to be avoided like some nasty sexual disease. They're just plain rubbish. The Pentium 4 and Pentium D are better performers, but still not something anyone should buy now unless they're really cheap and getting free electricity to run the thing.
Any other chip should be powerful enough to make Eve sing. The Athlon 64, Athlon X2, Sempron 64 and Core 2 Duo families are all good enough.
My own system is an Athlon X2 4600 with 2GB of memory and a GeForce 7600GT, and Eve runs like melted butter on it - except when TQ is lagging out, of course. |

Sorry, I wasn't aware that EVE is so different from other games in this respect. How come though, that EVE needs so much more processor power than most other games?
Anyway, I have an Athlon64 X2 4200 with 2 GB RAM and an nVidia 7900GT, so it's going smooth, even at 1680x1050 fullscreen.

try 3840 by 1024
i have tried eve on different PCs,at normal resolutions, and realised you need a decent graphics card to take all the possible load off the processor to allow the processor to deal with the "processor hungry" part of the game
so an average Gcard with a good processor is good, but get as high specced Gcard as you can,and in conjunction with an excellent processor you'll be set for a long time

It's because Eve's graphics engine was designed to do things that the graphics cards of the time (Eve was written for the original Radeon and GeForce cards) couldn't do in hardware.
You've heard of 'pixel shaders'? These are little programs that run on the GPU and alter what's shown on screen. But the old Radeon and GeForce cards didn't have pixel shader capability, so CCP uses the CPU to do the work instead.

Upgrade Idea...
Ok, here's what I was thinking of getting.
Intel E6400 Conroe 2.13 ghz CPU ASUS P5L-MX mb 2x512 mb Kingston ValueRAM 240 pin DDR2 667
How would that work? Any compatibility issues or gotchas to be aware of?
What kind of fps could I expect in space?

If you intend to use the built-in graphics of that motherboard then your FPS will be terrible. Intel's on-board graphics are so bad any sane person would rip the motherboard out and feed it to a log shredder. Or at least quickly buy a real graphics card... |

No, I plan on getting a new graphics card for it.
I was just wondering if the mb, cpu, and ram were fine.

When choosing a Processor ALWAYS go for the one with the largest cache.
A 2.5 mb with 512 cache will out perform a 3.0 with 256 cache.

How's the cache on the Intel E6400 Conroe 2.13 ghz CPU?

That's very dependant on what type of processor you're talking about. Netburst based chips (Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron) love cache and don't perform well unless they have lots of it, but the Conroe isn't nearly as cache dependant and AMD's chips basically don't care at all about cache size.
With AMD processors going from 256K cache to 512K gains about 3-5% performance, going from 512k to 1MB is mostly worthless. Which is why AMD stopped building 1MB chips recently.
Necrosmith, the E6400 should be fine. I prefer the Athlon X2 myself (slower than a Conroe, but less buggy and better with 64-bit code) but a Conroe wil get the job done okay. |

Last time I checked, eve, and all games for that matter are single threaded. Which means. Core Duo and all those multi core cpu's don't enhance game performance. The game can still only utilise one core.
The only way these cpu's can assist in performance is by offloading the Operating System demands onto a different core. Currenlty, the 32bit version of WinXP does not natively support that kind of load balancing accross multiple cores.
It's currently hardware assisted which gets sloppy given the way WinXP interfaces with system hardware. So performance is hit an miss with a duo cpu.
It WILL help if you're running other cpu needy tasks in the background like winAMP, V-scanner, or transcoding video.

Please also not, that the CPU industry is undergoing a transition from pumping up their CPUs with more Ghz to an architecture over haul. The conroe based systems completly toss out old permormance marker indicators like CPU speed and onboard cache for a more ideal and more elaborate direct interface with hardware components.
An entry level Conroe will outperform any other predecesor from Intel or AMD.

Not just the amount of RAM but also the speed. I've been playing since 2004 and have changed CPU and GFX several times over the years. I never saw a big increase until my current machine.
What's really interesting though is that I ordered another identical machine three months later but without the GFX card. Both machines had 1GB of RAM, AMD 64 3400 CPUs. My main machine had a GeForce 6800 LE card in it whereas the other machine used the onboard 6100 chip.
Initially the two machines played Eve pretty much at the same FPS. Then the RAM on the new machine (PC3200) died and I replaced it with some old PC2700 RAM. The result was an unplayable game. FPS dropped from the high 70s to the mid teens.
This is far and away the biggest difference I have seen any hardware change make in over 2.5 years of playing Eve. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Something on that system was broken, then - possibly the BIOS not detecting the PC2700's timings correctly, because memory bandwidth isn't a major factor in performance at all. Framerate drop should be no more than 5% or so. |

hmm are you sure you posted the right specs 126mb of ram is low as win xp base should be minimum of 256 with that no way your gonna get eve to run well
