I love ships that look badass - but Asymmetry or no symmetry makes me really not want to use it... even if its a great ship. Currently, to this effect, im using the minmatar firetail (Awesome, cool looking frigate!). I want to upgrade eventually, when my scavenging nets me a good amount of cash.
What ships are symetrical that i can get, having trained in minmatar ships? |

That Garmur is... really cool... the dramiel looks more like a skull. More frigates to add to my collection <3 |

I dont like the aesthetic of the Amarr... i actually dont mind the minmatar asymmetry as much; its more or less subtle, with the ships being wonky or jurry rigged to begin with.
Also i wanted the firetail. Because gosh darnit the firetail is the coolest regular frigate, with the condor being a close second. |

Fortunately more of them now.
It's true, they've done scientific studies which show that we humans find symmetry attractive, and asymmetry unattractive (in faces and bodies for instance). Which would explain why I found some of the Gallente ships (like the Exeq) just butt ugly, while they are otherwise the more attractive ships (when they are symmetrical). You have to wonder about some Gallente design decisions.
A few subtle asymmetries is alright. Hey even some beautiful people have a mole. I'm thinking Cindy Crawford. But if she had a big asymmetrical feature (like crooked nose or one eye noticeably bigger than the other) she wouldn't be a super model.

The more symmetrical a person's face the more attractive people tend to find them. |

While this is true... Have you ever seen one of those pics where they've taken one side of an attractive persons face and mirrored it? Perfectly symmetrical. Not pretty, just creepy.
I like ships with an understated asymmetry. The old Typhoon was a good example, its asymmetry clearly stated, but not screamingly so. The new version has toned it down, but it still has that charming imperfection. Or look at the Vexor. Looks symmetrical, right? It isn't. |

Symmetrical design went out in the early sixties. The late sixties hippy thing didn't replace it. It just died from its own lack of vibrance. If you saw a perfectly symmetrical face, you'd be struck that something must be wrong with that person. The myth that symmetry in faces appeals to us is just that, a myth. (The guys dreaming up that stuff make their livings with syndicated cable TV shows like Ancient Aliens. Note the hairdo.)
Symmetry in aircraft design has to do with maintaining balance, not aesthetics. In fact, using the words "symmetry" and "aesthetic" in the same sentence should be done with extreme caution to avoid appearing to be just a tad mentally unbalanced, or at the least bereft of any knowledge of visual design on even the most basic level.
Symmetry equates to stagnation.
People who offer their "preference" for design as irrefutable fact can be seen as having a personality disorder, rather than some deep intuitive insight which can set the rest of the world straight. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
