Think of the Lost Vikings. Rainbow Six. Battlefied: Modern Combat. These games gave you a group of characters, each one different and unique, and allowed you to seamlessly switch control between them one at a time.
Why not with Eve?
You can buy multiple accounts, and have the advantage of using multiple characters, simultaneously, with simultaneous skill training. However, I am not asking for that.
In Eve, we get three characters on each account. If we want to switch between these characters, we have to go through a quit/restart/login process.
Why not get rid of that?
Imagine if logging into Eve meant that all three of your characters existed at one time. You could not control more than one at a time, but you could seamlessly switch between each character.
Stuck in a boring mining operation? You could switch to your agent runner. Waiting for a gatecamp to dissolve? Switch to another character and scout it out. Fighting a 2vs1? Bring another one of your characters to make it a 2vs2, although you will have the disadvantage of tag-teaming between your characters.
This new mechanic would empower the single account holder with some likewise-perks of having multiple accounts, however it would lack two major advantages: Simultaneous use of two accounts and skill training.
Would CCP lose subscription money to this idea? Maybe, if you believe people would try squishing their multiple accounts into a single, super account. However, they would have to pay for characters transfers, plus lose the advantage of simultaneous control and skill training. Either way, extra money is being made.
There are other pros and cons, none of which seem to be near gamebreaking.
I would like to view outside opinions on this. Good idea, or bad?

you used to be able to 'swap characters' from the ESC menu a long while back. not sure why CCP took it out of the game, but i'm sure they had very good reason. i would guess it had something to do with those who would abuse it. by forcing you to restart the client, it would add some time into the process so you wouldn't be able to park a pilot somewhere and the logoff/login faster than a 'regular login'. also, i imagine that it makes sense to completely unconnect the client from the server and then force it to reopen and reconnect. like a psuedo reboot or something...

A lot of coding work just to get rid of having to quit and re login.
I'd prefer the time was spent on bugs and content than a change to eliminate such a minor thing. It's not as if it takes more than 60 seconds to log out and back in on a different character.

It caused a lot of session errors and wasnt really used for anything useful anyway so CCP decided not to waste any time trying to fix it.

i'd get all confused and somehow all three of me would pop at once and i'd fall over as screaming gibbering wreck on the floor of the office.. why would you want to do that to me?

After the 3rd time it would error.. it also leaked memory a lot so easier to removed it than to fix it.
