Hello all!
A quick question for the more knowledgeable. If I were to find a relic/data site, and ONLY hack the cans with good materials (Cargo scanners work to see this, as far as I know?), what happens as far as the site despawning and respawning elsewhere? Does the site only go away when completed, or will it disappear when I leave? I'd love to skip the trash, but I'd hate to leave a trashy site behind as opposed to letting it come back elsewhere.
Same question regarding DED / combat sites - Do they respawn if I just pop the valuable rats, loot the valuable cans, and move on? |

Yes, the sites will despawn after some period of time if you hack and leave in the case of data/relic sites. DED sites and unrated sites have specific triggers to despawn. In the case of DED sites, if you kill the overseer and warp out the site will despawn in a matter of minutes at most.
Unrated sites can be a bit... buggy. If someone goes in and clears everything except the despawn trigger it will just sit there in space but once the trigger is dead they too will go away.
At least in theory. Unrated sites in particular are finicky about this.
Sleeper caches follow their own rules and disappear from probe scanning after you hack a can inside but won't actually despawn as far as I can tell. |

What you can do is, on the cans which have no useful mats, open hack interface and close it immediately twice, can explodes, no more question of whether the site sill stay or go since everything's hacked or failed to hack, no more chance of a half-done site not despawning because of a bug (well, reduced chance)

Half finished data/relic sites can last quite a while -- I sure run across plenty of them and they're still there many hours later. |

Out of courtesy, I do what was previously stated. Hacked and closed twice just to pop the can. Even if its empty or that beloved 1 piece of carbon inside |

That is incorrect. I see them poof every day. I will cherry pick a site and then wait around for another newb to show up. I have timed it. When I say "about an hour" I have seen 57 mins and 63 mins on the outside.
So let's just quit with this "I am so courteous" hogwash. I hope to see you soon!

The spawn mechanics are a mystery ... I know one system in New Eden which had at least 3 relics whenever I jumped in (sample 3 times).

What I tend to do for simple clean up is blow up the cans that don't have anything good in them. Ie: Hack and fail twice. This is just me being OCD. |

Last I remember, those sites just went with a natural despawn timer of a couple days unless the site was actually completed.
Back before CCP messed around with the game mechanics pertaining to Hacking sites, they use to despawn within a few minutes if you warped off grid after interacting with a can, didn't matter if the site was completed or not.
So let me get this straight. You're saying if the site isn't completed and someone warps away, the site will now last for an hour and then despawn? So when did CCP change that ?
Doesn't seem right to me. That would make it very easy for players to complete those sites in hostile space. All they need to do is have safe spots made, watch D-scan and be ready to warp out when ships or probes show up.

There are also despawning site from scanner issue. Like in DED 4 monastery, when we killing guardian, site will vanish from scanner but it's still there physically. This occurs with sleepers caches as well.

This was done to help keep sites in circulation once they have been cherry picked.

Sorry DMC but that is the case. As I mentioned, I do this EVERY DAY and have first hand watched and timed this. Once one can is opened, the timer starts. And no warp away is needed. If you open a can and sit there for an hour....poof.

OK, thanks for the reply.
Is that the official reason from CCP?
Seems to me if CCP really wanted to keep sites in circulation after being cherry picked they would have just gone back with the original game mechanic of the site despawning after leaving the grid.
Actually if they wanted to stop the damn cherry picking, they would just make the containers resistant / immune to cargo scans..

Thanks, I now understand why CCP changed it to a 1 hr timer instead of going back with the immediate despawn after leaving grid..
Basically players are still able to cherry pick the sites but with an added bonus. The 1 hr timer allows them to re-ship into cloaked combat ships and gank the next person who shows up. Not only does that help beef up Killboard stats with easy victims, it also allows them to get more loot for less work.
Now I see why people keep saying go do Data and Relic sites in low / null sec.

I tested this on an untouched low-sec relic site by solving a couple of cans and then moving off 100km and watching the site. 53 minutes later the site despawned without anyone else showing up. I'll start logging some times and see if I find any exceptions.
How long have you noticed it working this way? |

They are both still there 2 hours later (+ some amount of time before I found them) I'm not staying in the sites. Orlacc: are you getting your data from sites that you stay in for hunting? Or do you see the same results if you warp out of the site?
Shiloh: Yes same results whether I stay or circle back. Keep in mind I only do null/WH sites so not sure if hi-sec is different. Way back when there were rats, the site would not start the despawn timer until you left. Or cloaked.

They also did not lie having the site de-spawn when there are players in the site. It use to be that way: You would be in a site, and suddenly it would all disappear. Although I think that can still happen, especially if you cloak.
Edit: Also many data and relic sites have one "big" can, one most likely to have the god stuff. Sometimes it has a unique name. Hacking that can seems to have a different effect than hacking any of the other cans.

One "big can?" Malarky. The name of the can will tell you the likelihood of good loot (and more difficult hack) as in Sansha Ruins as opposed to Remains. Other than that random is random.

I don't recall how are guristas i think they are similiar to serpentis sites. Really random and have nothing to do with name of the can. Ruins cans sometimes contain carbon.
