Can someone give me the cliff notes on corp/faction reputation? I mean, I understand that I do PvE missions for, say Top Down, who are part of Caldari, and I gain reputation with them (and the Caldari empire by proxy?)....but other than accessing L2 missions (and so on), what is that reputation getting me? Is there any method or madness to selecting who you build reputation with? Do you get faction hardware cheaper or something? |

Better corp standing gives you access to more lucrative missions/agents (L1 -> L2 -> L3 -> L4 ->L5). Better faction and corp standing together reduce the taxes paid when trading in their stations and also some industry stuff is cheaper iirc.
Choosing criteria for a corp to mission for: - corps owning trade hubs (taxes) - corps having medical offices (jump clones) - corps having good items in LP store (e.g. Sisters of EvE)
Only choose corps for standing grind which can't host players (e.g. The Scope <- don't choose). If you go the PvP route and like to kill pods, you wreck your standing with those pretty fast.

Increased standing allows you to run higher level mission you need +1 for level 2 missions, +3 for level 3 and +5 for level 4. Standings also impact tax rates for reprocessing, industry and trade. Normal missions improve standing with the corporation the agent belongs to. Every 16 normal missions at the same level you get a storyline that improves standing with the faction.
Every time your standing with a faction goes up there is also a derived standing loss with that factions opponent. If you increase standing with Caldari - you lose standing with Gallente. If your standing drops below -5, the faction navy will shoot at you when you are in their space.

The main benefit of corp standing is access to higher level mission agents.
The main benefit of faction standing is lower broker fees for the market in stations owned by that faction. Note that corp standing comes into this as well, but faction standing is 2.33 times as important.
As for recommendations:
- If you see yourself running missions in the short term, Sisters of EVE are worth getting to 5 (either their highsec corp or their lowsec corp as you see fit) - If you see yourself trading, use the agent in the hub you want to live in.

So if the player corp I'm in is made up of guys mostly working Gallente rep, and I'm working Caldari rep....is that going to be a problem?

Is SoE ostensibly a Gallente corp, or are they neutral? |

The SoE sort of like the Gallente, but not so much that it will make a big difference to your standings.
Just don't accept their anti-Amarr missions.
As for player corps and standings: Unless you either enter factional warfare, or get your standings to -5 with one or more factions, your standings won't impact your corp at all.

Sisters of Eve are technically a pirate faction. Not part of the four main ones you start in. They have stations all over New Eden high, low and even null sec. Once you've done the basic tutorial missions there is an epic story arc you can do to get started on them.
Something else the others didn't mention is research agents at level 4. From what I've read they can do a L4 mission for you that yields components you may need for invention jobs. You can either set these agents to farm them for you or you have to get them from data/relic sites and the hacking games in space. Or otherwise buy them at market or on contract if you want to start inventing T2 blueprint copies to build things. |

Not missions. You give them a research job and they generate research points which you trade for data cores. To be honest, it's barely worth it and shouldn't be a main consideration for who you mission for.
To give you an idea, each agent generates about 1 data core a day, you can have max 6, 1+(level in research project management). So about 6 data cores a day. I can easily use 6 cores in a single job and run 10 jobs concurrently and start more than one set in a day.

Never going to be a problem.
As long as your Gallente rep doesnt fall below -5.0, and your corp isnt permanently active in gallente space.
Once your rep falls below -5.0 though, you will be chased by Gallente police(and killed), whenever you enter their territory. This will, therefore prevent you from doing anything in Gallente space.
But it takes a very long time to get to -5.0, so i wouldnt worry about that. |

as well as the passive RP you earn you can do a daily mission for them (very easy distribution) which effectivly doubles the rate you can get data cores. and also counts towards storyline missions. |

1. Your personal standing to NPC corps at 8.0 or higher gives you access to jump clone creation at their medical facilities.
2. Your personal standing to NPC factions gives you brokerage fee reduction for orders placed at their stations.
3. Your personal standing to NPC factions gives you access to missions for ALL corps in that faction.
Example: 5.0 Caldari standing allows you to get level 4 missions for any Caldari corp, even ones you've never run missions for before.
Effective Personal Faction Standing = MAXIMUM( Personal Corp Standing , Personal Faction Standing )
5. You also need effective standing to access faction epic arcs.
6. Your corp's standing to a NPC faction doesn't matter.
7. Your corp's standing to a NPC corp gets you jump clone access at 8.0 or higher.
There are a few other things standing applies to, but most of them are esoteric (like RP, faction war entry, etc.) |

Just a note on the Jump Clones access; medical facilities are now called Clone Bays. The term changed when medical clones and the need to upgrade them were removed with the Rhea Update. |

It has changed, it no longer matters i believe. All you need is the starbase charter along with fuel, and you can set up a pos anywhere. |
