ok even though ultimately makes no difference, just gives me a heads start in certain skills, I have done many new games swapping which race, and now its getting stupid..
Played Oblivion as imperial and as Dunmer...
Never played Morrowind
See I like the whole thing with improved speech meaning better gold for stuff, and finding more gold, as in theory it should make all other things easier to do, whether its heavy armor or light, or two handed weapons or one.. more gold always means more options....
I generally do not like Magicka, preferring to use good old fashioned weapons to kill my foes, but I have noticed that for the 2nd dragon at least, its rather hard to get close enough to use combat weapons, and just about manageable with arrows..
Orcs well they are just plain ugly, but I still like the idea of perhaps a warrior mage type
Dunmer, same as orcs really, but not sure if I like the look of elves, have never liked elves
Imperial, as I said above the extra money would be good, but what else will I be getting? and is the voice that good considers you get something similar?
cat person thing - I like, but really only for theiving and perhaps assassin work
Lizard man - do not like, come on if I had problems with the look of the elves and orcs, then I was never going to like these guys!
Other races I have not really considered at all, but overall despite appearances I am leaning towards orc / imperial, shame I cannot do a hybrid! like the old white orc of oblivion

Gold as any type of melee character is a non issue if you smith all of your own equipment. Even if you don't you can find good stuff just from clearing out caves. I have a stockpile of expensive rings, necklaces, and other things that I can't sell without spending a few weeks in a city sleeping the days away waiting for the merchants' gold to regenerate.
Gold as a pure mage however is quite difficult to keep early on since you'll be spending much of it on spellbooks.
The racial skill bonuses are really not that big of a deal since you will almost always be starved for perk points even if you make something completely contrary to its bonuses, a wood elf knight for example.
Roleplay. Play a nord barbarian intent on helping Ulfric liberate skyrim.
Play an Argonian assassin for the empire.
Play an Imperial treasure hunter.
Play an orc berserker with hide armor and dual axes.
If you worry about stats and abilities you'll continue to restart because the min/max will never be perfect. |

Your assumption that race doesn't matter is rediculas. The race buffs are very very paticular to certain ways to play.
As akita said, bretons get a huge magic resist, which you can use along with enchanted gear/stones to be nearly immune to magic.
Orcs get the Beserker skill, which i think is the most powerful power in the game. Deal 2x and take 1/2x damage and slow down time, its rediculas.
Kajit get the night eye and a hand to hand bonus, along with heavy armor you can be a fairlly strong h2h.
Check out the racial powers and some of the inherent bonuses to get a feel.
Also look into redgard if you want a warrior. Fast stamina regen goes better with a 1h, light armor warrior, beserker can go either way, but I have found it very effective with heavy armor and 2h weapon |

Racial abilities help early on, but past a certain threshold even the best become useless because the gear becomes so powerful.

This is my experience exactly. Most of the abilities become totally obsolete and can even be gained from items or spells. I'd suggest either choosing a race for their convenience ability or take one that has an ability you either can't reproduce or don't want to waste item abilities on. The orc racial ability is one of those and resistances in general are good, although easily replaceable by spells, items and potions. |

My original character was Argonian, but so far I have still never seen a water area. The handful of places that even had you move around underwater for a short distance usually had water breathing pots on shelves nearby. Plus all the dialog had people calling me 'Lizard'. |

You can't even pull your weapons out underwater to fight the rare slaughterfish you encounter in the water.
I wonder (haven't tried it and not at home atm) can you do shouts underwater?
If you can't do anything underwater, they really need to revisit that in a patch. I had a nasty run-in with slaughterfish myself.
Went Redguard with my first and second character.
Way I see it, somewhat echoing some above remarks, once you get going in the game the loot, enchanting and smithing is going to make whatever race picks you make unnoticeable.
CSB aside? Just role-play whatever race you want to. Whatever shortcomings you may have will easily be nullified by equipment and/or spells. |

Like others said, it doesn't really matter what race you pick. In the short term, an Altmer will be better than an Orc at magic, but as you increase your skills and choose appropriate perks it won't really matter in the long run. One of my characters is an Orc mage and by level 20 she could kick any Altmer's ass to Summurset IsleAlinor and back with her destruction arsenal.

I always go a Breton bow assassin, however they can become really overpowered especially if u perk up enchanting skills and manage to get hold of a deadric bow you can do over 900 dmg a shot if u buff the skills and stay hidden. You end up killing everything in a dungeon with one shot so u end up sliding up the difficulty, unfortunetely mages can also kill in two hits but it keeps things interesting. Funny thing about the elder scrolls since marrowind is that the combat is the least interesting thing about the game. The Storyline and exploration etc. is more interesting IMO.
Anyway, never really played any other race but Breton since the bonuses of the other races are marginal or can be replicated in some way. |

What about Orc Berserk. Is there a potion for that or something? I was wondering if they had different relations with the various Orc camps too. Do they need to be 'blooded' like my current characters did or are they considered to have that from the word go? |

As far as I know orcs will not have to do anything to be allowed in and trade with the orc settlements |

Beserk is simply fortify health, strength and stamina but less agility - easily replicated without the drawbacks with potions and food. Haven't become an orc in skyrim, but i got access to orcs camps by doing a fairly simple quest. They don't attack you anyway, I mined some Ebony for my bow and swords for my deadric weapons in one of their camps south of winterhold and they didn't touch me, just kept telling me to leave. BTW has there ever been a deadric artfact bow? |

I made a woodelf, and somehow managed to make it look like a Mordor Orc from the Lord of the rings movies.
Went all stealthy, light armour, and bow assissan type. was fun shooting people in the face (primarily the mouth). |

No, it's not, at least not in Skyrim. That was the Oblivion version of Berserk. In Skyrim, it's called Berserker Rage: deal double damage and take half damage for the next 60 seconds. My first character was an Orc warrior/smith. When I wrapped up the main quest I had a Daedric War Axe (Legendary) that I had made myself that was 207 damage rating. I downed a +50% damage potion and popped Berserker Rage, then proceeded to one-shot Alduin with a power attack. It's mighty. PVP is a question with no single right answer, but a lot of wrong ones. |

well I have actually gone for an ork, I love two handed weapons, despite being slightly slow...
Just crafted my first Dwarven Armor and got a dwarven great sword.. saving up all the dragon stuff in my house..
Alchemy is rather annoying trying to find out all the effects, but I guess it would take time, lots of health potions made though, also look to try and make high value potions to sell...
Good fun, about to do some of the imperial stuff now! |

Bretons are great if you looking for magic resists early in the game , but my favorite are Nords , they probably the best pure warriors builds in skyrim Make sure you work on your smithing and enchantment aswell because you will need those magicresists badly midgame and later
mostly playing a dual wielding nord with light armour here but then i took a arrow in the knee I do not agree with what you are saying , but i will defend to the death your right to say it...... Voltaire |

Don't forget that alteration has a 3-perk skill in it that increases your magic resistance. It also has one that uses 30% of any incoming magical attack to restore your magicka (that one requires 90 or 100 alteration, though.)
On an unrelated note, has anyone found a way to quickly raise your conjuration and restoration? I've got all of the other magic skills maxed (well, except illusion, but that's as simple as casting muffle about 100 more times in succession :P), but those two just seem to crawl. |

Conjuration : keep casting bound weapons then immediately re-sheathe them and repeat. Restoration : keep healing the enemy (deal some damage while you keep doing it to also level up some combat-related skill).

Shadow of nocturnal + any muffeled boots + assassin/fortify onehand light armor + daedric dagger enchanted with damage (preferably frost or shock since fire emit light) + damage health poison made from 84 alchemy while wearing enchanted fortify alchemy clothes = ?????
Whole lotta throat slitting/backstab deaths and cleared dungeons with no one EVER knowing you were even there =p
I am having so much fun playing agent 47 and basically getting 'silent assassin' ratings on all my dungeons.
Btw, it stills seems kinda broken that enemies will take an arrow in the face, or watch their buddy get one-shotted from a well-placed poisoned arrow, and when they can't find you they go back muttering 'must've been the wind'. EVEN while their buddy's corpse is cooking in the bonfire =p
Edit: btw, that's daedric dagger smithed and sharpened with smithing at 100, and wearing enchanted fortify smithing gears while also chugging fortify smithing potions =p |
