Would someone please explain what 'out of my zone of influence' means when an agent is unable to locate someone?
I have Googled but been unable to find a definitive answer. Lots of speculation, no hard fact.
Does anyone know for sure?
I thought it may be when someone enters a wormhole, but some situational evidence recently has suggested this is not the case. It is certainly nothing to do with being in 0.0 because my agent has located people in 0.0 systems before.
Thanks. |

Why would you use security status as a reference point? Zone - locater agents have a limited reach. They can't "see" the entire map. Molden Heath, for instance, encompasses a wide range of security status systems. So...think of it in terms of "I'm here...the locater agent is here. He says my target is way far away and he can't see him. I guess I need to go somewhere else!"
http://evemaps.dotlan.net/ This might help. New Eden's a huge place though.
Treason never prospers. What is the reason?
Why, if it prospers, none dare call it "treason."

That article makes no reference to zone of influence messages at all. Read the question before replying. |

I said that I was fairly sure it wasn't a case of being in 0.0, not that it was .
I have had locator agents all over New Eden locate people without difficulty in space that is in regions very far away and in other empires' space or 0.0, which leads me to think that it is not simply a range thing. Furthermore, the max range for locator agents is commonly listed as 'unlimited' on various fan information websites with a consistency that can't simply be 'made up'. Also, the information tab for an agent lists max range as 'different region', with no mention of a maximum range.
Thank you for your reply and input Serene, but does anyone have definitive information on this rather than speculation? |

Again, your quotes make no reference to any 'zone of influence' messages that locator agents provide when they are unable to locate someone for you. Furthermore, the level 4 range is listed there as 'unlimited', which would appear to debunk the idea that agents have a limited range.
For clarity, when attempting to locate a pilot whom the agent cannot find he responds with something similar to 'Unfortunately XXX is outside my zone of influence'. I can find no definitive explanation of what this means other than mass speculation. Until recently I had thought this meant that the person in question was located within a worm hole, however recent observations suggest this may not be (exclusively) the case. |

Post more information about your "recent observations", otherwise the dude's in a wormhole (if you're using level 4 agents). |

It would have helped if you would have mentioned you were using a level 4 agent. We never know how much someone already knows, we can't read minds.
It looks like that is the wormhole message. http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=1488852&page=1#8

I've only seen that (or something similar) when the person was in a wormhole. |

No, locator agents can still locate people who are logged out. They'll even tell you which station they logged out in. |

If you are trying to locate somebody with a Lvl 4 Locater, and the agents tells you he outside the zone of influence.
You target is in a wormhole. Otherwise the agent would find your target.

you could always take an alt, put it in a WH and see what happens when you try and locate it.
Get the same result, you got your answer. Get a different one ... move the alt around until you've covered every base (distance, sec, biomassed, ...)
If still can't recreate the same message, then take it to the petition, with your evidence, and see what they say.
(I'm betting on the WH factor though myself).
