CCP ages ago were going to do something about all the abandoned Secure containers in space. How about Putting a timer on them. 1 week per lvl of anchoring. If ppl want the can there for longer then they have to un-anchor it and then re-anchor it. |

Ought to give a 24 hr warning on the expiration time. And have 'My Containers' be a filter option in map filter.

Add another function along with deployable containers. Call it 'beacons.'
They take up very little space in the hold, have minimal to no interaction ability in space, and simply mark a location. Prime concern is minimal CPU usage loading them. Give them low priority, small character link, no 'tags', and visible ONLY to the person who placed them or his gang/corp (settings could adjust this for warning beacons, etc).
Once the insta-system we currently have is removed, beacon's would become the new warp to mannerism. But they would have placement issues, primarily that they can't be placed near gates and stations, within 200km.
Finally, extend that same 200km placement zone to stations and gates, particularly in Empire space.
Just as the op said, can's would have a minimal time in space, dependent on users anchoring ability. I also believe that they should not be readily visible on the primary screen, just on the overview.
Also, there should be a straight limit to the number of cans mounted in a zone, as well as the number of cans a single player could mount, total. Make this dependent on whatever skill you will, but the end result would be that a single player could not crowd a zone. They could use alts to, but I'd also make a shorter limit on mount times (maybe two days per level of anchoring, maxing at 10 days).
Just some ideas ...

Crippling lag problems warping into belts, we`ve all had these problems, 1-2-300+ cans littering belts and outside stations are a nuisance. I see little problem with 1 week per skill level for keeping a can anchored, maybe a detonate all cans after the max time runs out ( dunno how this would be workable ) but hey lets get rid of this lag.

Edited by: BigZeus on 11/10/2006 00:56:11 maybe when time runs out the anchoring system on the can lets go, and at that point that the point the can is fair game :D and if it's not reanchored or taken in a week after that the the can disappears (drifts into space) with what ever contents are in it.

once the cans are un-achored then they are treated like any other can. they go pop after approx 2 hrs.

I agree 100% on this topic, with one minor exception..
There's some *fantastic can art out there that has been done. Yes, there's a lot of really terrible can art as well, but the really classy, well-done art I'd hate to see disappear (for instance, the shark!).
Not sure of a way to have exceptions, but I'd really hate to see some of those artistic projects go away. :(
