I'm not sure where you live that a one-kilometer long ship would dwarf most cities near you..

In eve, you can zip around a constellation in minutes, around whole AU's in seconds. How will you scale down the fights and flying to planet terms?...
Easy, just don't allow warping in atmosphere. Eve ships in sublight don't fly much faster than modern aircraft, in fact the heavier ships fly a lot slower than modern aircraft. For example, the cruising speed of a 777 is around 280 m/s.

Hmm, if I remember reading correctly, the ships we fly aren't meant to enter the atmosphere. My guess would be that you would have to enter an orbiter ship and then land somewhere to get into a type of aircraft. Man, think of all of the new ship classes you could get from that. --------------------------------------------- Forum Wars!...Because the battlefeild is laggy. |

Planetary flight would hardly qualify as just a "bit" of eye candy, but in any case: eye candy is 75% of the reason I play EVE.
As for the practical aspects of such environment expansions, just how would we benefit more by being able to wander around stations? It seems to me that in-station environments would just change the way we do what we already do in stations, whereas planetary environments would create a venue for entirely new gaming in EVE.

I don't see why not. Pods are far more aerodynamic than most Eve ships.

Think the lag is bad now, wait until they attempt to introduce planetary interface. And in the case of plantary flight like previous posts, there will need to be new classes of ships due to the lack of aerodynamics on most ships. Imho, It will be the end of the EVE that most of us have come to love. And how many people will be allow to interface with a planet at a time. Imagine blob wars on the surface of a planet. Will be interesting and possibly disasterous.

I guess a lot of you never played the BBS games of the Trade Wars genre. Planets can have space ports. Planets contain resources, slaves, workers, inahbitants (mostly npc) that mine, man defensive guns, procreate, etc.
The defense of a planet can be fun. You will have factions fighting over control of the resources. I can think of harvesting food, water, ores/mins, workers, etc. I have always wondered why the planets were in game as is.
I think it is great news. Different planet types could have more of one ore than another. some could have fresh water, some poisoned water. Breathable atmosphere, not breathable, etc.

Well, for starters it would open up some interesting tactical possibilities, especially if not all ships are capable of entering a planetary atmosphere (which they shouldn't be - let, say, frigates and cruisers in, but not battleships or capitals).
It could also do interesting things to the trade and manufacturing markets. Imagine is system security = immigrants = ISK, for example. Not the opinions of my corp or my alliance. |

Never mind your standard rocky planets, what about gas giants? Science Fiction is rife with descriptions of gas giant 'mining', cloud scoop arrays in the gas layers a few km down. The resources you could get from a gas giant far outweigh that from a rocky planet.
It would be more like the current POS though (from my view, too new to have had any interactions with POS's).

This could be great, no more station camping. I dock, go wait in the bar just by the door and use my t2 baseball bat as the carebears come in for a glass of milk.

Planetary Flight Might Mean you can build a POS on the ground and mine the same way you do for moons and/or its another way to claim Sovereignty of a system by claiming planets and POS's in a system.

If you ask me and also the lore interpreted, the current bigger ships are build in docks that are anchored in outerspace or space stations. They aren't suited for planetary flight at all. The only thing they can do is orbit a planet and bombard the surface. The smaller ships like shuttles and frigates however could be able to take a flight through the atmosphere.
Fighting for pieces of land wich can be harvested for extra resources is always a plus, same as walking around in a station. Like you have to visit that agent in his office, instead of using the current interface. Same as visiting the market, making deals, trying to sneak up to someone and spy on them. Possibilities are endless.
But also afaik it is listed on the drawing board, not even in developement yet. Eve at this moment isn't finished and they have laid out a path for it. So planetary flight and walking around stations will come sooner or later and will add a lot to immersion as well. The only thing I'm wondering is if they would allow out of pod fight or not, sinse the cloning technology is integrated with the pod technology.

Planetary control (as in being able to remotely mess with it and own it - kind of like a pos) woudl be cool.
Being able to fly around it - well, that just seems kind of silly to me.
Once that happens, Its only a matter of time before people start wanting SimCity like control of cities, etc. Basically its just the start of a downward spiral that will draw resources from an allready stressed resource pool.
Keep it simple - Keep it in space.

Qft.
In addition putting up refineries etc. on planets is thinkable. This would give planetary flight a very good reason.

But how will it be able to generate enough lift to stay up in a atmosphere? ______________________________

I could goto the local nudy bar and get my jollys? I could take the station control center hostage and ransom it back to the original owners. And best of all we could stop the much needed research on station piercing AMMO. I could just walk into the hangers and blast da enemy right there. -)

Since when did Eve have delusions of grandeur about being a flight sim? If I want planetary flight i'll play IL-2 Sturmovik, if I want to wander around a station ill go play.. oh i dont know... second life.

Someday, EVE should include planetary flight, and fight.
Both with our capsuleer characters and a new form of FPS character.
Now Bhaal could not get out and walk around, but a new kind of alt could, and we could train him/her at the same time we train our capsuleer character.
If EVE doesn't do this in the future, some other game will...

I think planetary flight is a major no no for eve. The scale of the problems it involves is crazy. The list of reasons not to do it is huge no matter how nice it might be.
I would much rather see the space aspects of the game improved.
For instance.... more interaction with space objects, including better collision and physics.
I`d be more interested in giant asteroids you could build mining stations on for instance. Seeing missles colliding with solid objects again. Having giant structures you could fly through without getting snagged and jammed all the time on the crappy collision.
I`d also like to see planets actually orbit their sun rather than sitting static in space. This would really add some much needed unpredictability to the game I think.
