As I'm sure you're aware of by now, probably googling his name as I did when the news broke this morning, Nimoy has passed.
I don't really care what CCP sees fit doing, but, perhaps, some kind of monument isn't out of the question for someone who's legacy cannot be untangeled from any contemporary science fiction.
Not much more needs to be said about the matter, other than 'Thanks, Mr. Nimoy; for everything." |

Supported! Also out of respect, please make any kind of nod to the man include the MAN, not the character he portrayed. Mr. Nimoy and his fellow cast members have done amazing things for their fanbase, and the awareness of Sci-fi and social issues they raised are more important than the characters. |

Were it up to meGäó I would just go with a special edition shuttle called the Nimoy and make it look in such a manner as to be a slight nod to the TOS shuttles.
It would have special travel capabilities to reach those Jovian systems and go where nobody has gone before.

BTW it might serve this objective better than merely asking CCP to "do something": we players have the power to hold our own event. An in-game memorial service may be in order here.

No special abilities, but insurance would replace the shuttle in perpetuity should it ever be lost.

The PLEX's cash value, in turn to have a meaningful portion donated to whichever charity Nimoy favored in his life.

Normal i wouldn't want a memorial for someone that is an actor or artist, Leonard Nimoy was more than just an actor/artist he gave most of us the vision of what a life among the stars could be and i think a good few of us play this game due to him installing that in us.
so this is a plea to ccp please add a ship in honor of him and give it a scanning bonus after all he was the science officer

I'm thinking that fielding a memorial fleet central in New Eden may be in order, a "service" of sorts to respect a sci-fi icon that I think even this game might even own its existence to.

As a Trekkie myself, I think it would be very fitting for CCP to create something in his memory. We would not be where we are today because of his visionary approach to the future, and I think all of the cast and those who produced such a series should ever be so proud to have been a small part in this universe.
I propose that we along with CCP find some way to remember Mr. Spock in New Eden, whether it be renaming one of the new t3 destroyers, a system, mod or something that we can all call our own.

So many good ideas. Naming a shuttle after him would I think be more appropriate than a T3 destroyer and CCP does not even have to do the design work. All they have to do is get permissions to make it look exactly like the shuttles from the original Star Trek series.
"The United Federation of Planets (abbreviated as UFP and commonly referred to as the Federation) was an interstellar federal republic, composed of planetary governments that agreed to exist semi-autonomously under a single central government based on the principles of universal liberty, rights, and equality, and to share their knowledge and resources in peaceful cooperation and space exploration." As we contemplate as individuals how we would honor a man that we all admired I would humbly propose this. That each of us do all that we can to bring this vision for peaceful cooperation of all people on earth into being and that we do it in his honor.

Yes, if CCP could get permission to do this or similar it would be grand. A nice memorial of a Man who inspired so many and I bet inspired quite a few here in this game as well. It is the hope of some Players that one day in this game we can take our characters to the surface of a planet and a Planet renamed and finished out as a tribute would be appropriate (as well as so many other good ideas presented).
RIP Leonard Nimoy and thank you Sir.

While I am an admirer of Mr. Nimoy's work, I find his contribution to the world of sci-fi to be a bit lacking when compared to others. I would be supportive of a Nimoy memorial after we have a memorial to Azimov, Clarke, and about a dozen others who were the ones to define the genre.

At some point we can consider that Star Trek is also for something in the existence of a game like Eve Online.

I think what they said at NASA pretty much sums up what Leonard Nimoy was to 2 generations of nerds.
Quote:NASA is mourning the passing of actor Leonard Nimoy, most famous for his role as Star Trek's Vulcan science officer Mr. Spock. The sci-fi classic served as an inspiration for many at NASA over the years, and Nimoy joined other cast members at special NASA events and worked to promote NASA missions, as in this 2007 video he narrated before the launch of the Dawn mission to the asteroid belt. Nimoy also was there for the 1976 rollout of the shuttle Enterprise, named for the show's iconic spacecraft.
NASA Administrator Charles Bolden issued the following statement upon hearing of Nimoy's passing: GÇ£Leonard Nimoy was an inspiration to multiple generations of engineers, scientists, astronauts, and other space explorers. As Mr. Spock, he made science and technology important to the story, while never failing to show, by example, that it is the people around us who matter most. NASA was fortunate to have him as a friend and a colleague. He was much more than the Science Officer for the USS Enterprise. Leonard was a talented actor, director, philanthropist, and a gracious man dedicated to art in many forms. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the legions of Star Trek fans around the world.GÇ¥

This being said though, it would not be the first reference in-game to historically-significant icons of science fiction. If you've ever run data sites in null sec, you've more than likely run into one of those black obelisks from Space Odyssey (and if you check their description, it says "It's full of stars").

What I am trying to say is a celebrity who has made no real contribution to this world other than acting does not deserve this much attention. He's an actor, a good one, nothing more, nothing less. Shakespeare did little more than write, and he has statues of himself in front of numerous universities around the world, same with Mark Twain and numerous other writers, people who did little more than make entertainment their lifetime career, and are REVERED for it.
As Spock, and through his other ventures, Leonard Nimoy helped promote a whole generation of interest in space exploration, science, and boldly going where no one had gone before. CULTURALLY, this man helped define a generation, and every generation that came after it. Hell, I know kids who were born in 2006 that know what star trek, who spock, is.
Fact is, if mark twain or shakespeare can get a statue, I see no reason why Nimoy cant get a memorial of SOME kind in a SPACESHIP GAME that might only exist today because of the interest in scifi he helped create. The culture WE live in, and I dont mean that in generational or national terms, but the geek/nerd/space-enthusiast community, had many of its FOUNDATIONS built by this man, yes there were those who came before, and those that came after. While I personally am a fan of Heinlein and Asimov, most people wouldnt know who they are, or have read their books, but almost EVERYONE knows Spock, and Nimoy.
So forgive me if I find your point rather, well, pointless. |

It is not that Nimoy was a better man, or achieved greatness through scientific research, or other expected achievements for popular recognition.
It is, rather, that he reached so many of us, and inspired curiosity and wonder about space, and dreaming of the possibilities of such exploration.
His work, as the role model for so many real life scientists and astronauts, inspired the choices they made which made them actual pioneers for our world.
He may not have gone into space himself, but he inspired many who did.
For a great many of us, we owe him recognition for opening our eyes, and looking to the heavens once more.

I've been really sad since hearing of Spock's passing. I have already petitioned CCP for them to put something into the game that nods in his direction. I would like to see an agent created somewhere in EVE probably named something identifiably him. The agent should send you on a humanitarian mission, and the reward should be a book of logic which has his best quotes he is known for. I would particularly suggest his last tweet as well as LLAP.
Leonard Nimoy was such a brilliant actor, Star Trek is a brilliant franchise, and Spock was one of my favourite characters. He ought to be shown the reverence he deserves from a game like EVE Online that has a lot to thank him for, as well as those that made Star Trek what it is. Thank you Spock. LLAP

I support this completely, he was an icon of science fiction that deserves something here in EVE.
Sadly I dont agree with naming the new T3 desse after him, thats a combat ship, and he was not associated with combat or fighting. I think it should be a shuttle, or a science/exploration ship of some sort.
If CCP doesnt agree with the ship idea, then a star, or a system, planet... something. He has more than earned it.

I very much doubt CCP will do this, love to see it but don't think it will ever happen.
It would set a precedent they would have trouble to maintain in the future. Just think of it, who decides who's going to be included/excluded for this on what criteria? You're stepping into liquid sand here.
Best thing the EVE player base can do, like in 'Vile Rat's' case is to name items ingame themselfs and maintain it that way.
Somewhere around 2009 we, CCP + community lost a member of the community team everybody was very fond off. No matter the grief we all felt a the time, no in game item was named after her.
It's a nobel idea but.... |
