I think it would be cool if player could place decals on their ships based on their Corp and/or Alliance membership. Corp members (with permission from CEO or whoever) could have the corp and or alliance symbol placed somewhere on their ship (or multiple places). Maybe even add the ability to put flags with some slight degree of animation on a few of the corp / alliance ships ("flagships"). Players with high enough standings to NPC corporations could maybe also get a couple decals from them as well (I can picture my ferox with the quafe symbol everywhere :D ). It seems like it would be a fun graphical addition that wouldn't take a whole lot of work on the development end (adding transparency and editing textures) and could probably be introduced with Kali. Eh?

this has been asked for many times... what it comes down to though, is that eve is laggy enough already without haveing to load ships with custom decals/animations/flags or what ever else you might want

Honestly i dont know how much lag it would cause. If players could just change their decals whenever they wanted and the decal itself had to be loaded seperate from the ship texture then yea, it could be a problem. But if people could only have one and it had to stay on for x days (or a new one couldnt be added for x days), it might work.

Personally, I would like to customize my ship's appearance, even if no one else could see it. I guess that could be done by jiggering the graphics in the game folder (like in the old days with Quake).
Would anyone who has tried that care to post any suggestions?

i hate to mention a differnt game on the forums... but, this has bene done over at HW2 (relic)... they have a black sqare on the ship where your little pic goes... i didnot do much modding over there, but i got around. It does do the same thing... perhaps only a spot for corp and alliance, and if no alliance the corp decal twice(4 times if 2 areas per ship per corp/alliance.. ) it wouldnot need to do much more after it grabs the alliance/ corp tickers. it might be possible.

The adding of a decal may or may not cause more lag, however in the clients current condition, I would prefer they solve current lag problems so the addtional features are less likely to cause lag. -----------

Sorry to tell you, but messing with the game files and folders is against the EULA, and will bring the giant ban hammer upon you. _________________________

well in other games the customized flags/icons/emblems are cached on the client and loaded as needed so it wouldnt be so laggy since it would load from the hdd and not from the server...

I can agree that there are other more pressing matters at hand, but i dont think they'd put off fixing bugs to add a decal feature. Defenitly do-able

Oh yes, the Chewbacca Lag Defense.
It's not going to rend a hole in the space-time continuum. OK? I know some of you folks are scared because some of the early FX were done horribly and came with a horrible cost. I'm willing to believe they've learned since then (or got a new FX guy). Decals aren't exactly new technology that stretches the very bounds of the renderer programmer's imagination. It costs as close to nothing as you can get, especially on your modern video card that's severely underutilized when running this game.
Still, it wouldn't be the first thing I'd want them to allocate time for.

paint jobs and decals would not add anything to the lag issues, as its all held and displayed client side. The amount of instructional traffic to and from the servers would amount to less that this sentence.

It's not rendering that is the issue. It's the transmission of a new decal everytime someone new enters local.

Most of the time the ship that enters local is a little white square, the corp logo or whatnot would not be visible until you actually zoomed in to look at the vessel in question..

lag? i'm playing this game on a bottom of the line laptop, i hope that you guys out there can handle a 6kb decal...
but, for those of you who cant, how about the wonderful idea of "options". press escape, go to your settings, you got three choices:
1) never load insignia 2) load insignia with portrait 3) always load insignia
of course z buffering ( i think that's the one ) would have it so that you don't need load it on your machine until you come within a respectable zoom distance to your target ( i myself use howitzers for combat so i would never get close enough to my targets [ if all goes well ] ). and npc organizations programmed into the game can have their flags put in with the games files. so only thing you have to worry about are player flags that get within really close to you. the forum doesn't allow me to post my signature... so i guess this will have to do.

The cache shall set ye free.
And besides, I was addressing the people who do in fact live in fear of any additional visual fx. Historically there's a lot of confusion in that area. And given that it's what I do for a living I try to inject some reason and sanity into this kind of argument whenever it comes up.
Fair enough?
