Edit: I've seen some peeps complaining of speed issues, they seem faster to me.
I'll second that comment. The look and feel is really nice. I like the color scheme. It's easy on the eyes and has good contrast (a plus for me due to color blindness).
As for performance, I know it's not my connection, as I have a lightning fast connection at work (where I am now) and a 30 Mbps connection at home that actually delivers its advertised speed. EveGate has always been slow for me regardless of where I access it. And I see the same issues on the forum. |

Nice forum, good job! Just a quick question: why do you translate the game in German and Russian and don't offer a forum for this languages? |

Skeito wrote:I cant stand the new design. I browse the forums for information, not to see someones avatar, not to see loads of real estate that has pretty pictures of eve space in them. I agree their is a need for progress, but surely you arent telling me this is the best that you could do?
Was going to suggest turning off the images, but they are using table cells with very large minimum fixed heights, so it doesn't have much of an effect. Well, okay, each individual posting is its own table, each stacked on top of the next. (For any pro Web devs out there, you have my permission to snarf your cola right about now.) In other words, in spite of the pretty pictures, the code itself is adhering to seriously outdated standards.
Beyond the boxes being too tall for short posts, I love the look. The code though would have someone on my carpet for a serious talking to.
I think I shall now poke around to find out what all those canned Ajax libraries they are using do. They may explain some of the quirkies of opening forums in new tabs if the page is not really grabbing new pages, but making Ajax calls and then refreshing the URL to make it look like a page call.

When I try to open a thread in a new tab by middle-clicking in Chrome, it opens both in the new tab and the current tab I'm in. This is highly irritating :smith: |

Second complaint. Why is it when I click a thread I am dumped half way through the thread? For example clicking on a thread for the first time can dump me on page 8 out of 11.

I'm really glad that CCP went ahead and launched the new forums despite laundry lists of (easily) 50+ bugs being unaddressed. The above statement is also factual and accurate. |

Where's the option to disable (or have smaller) portrait images?
Whilst Avatars might be your new, current 'shiny' project CCP - I do not come to the forums to view pictures of people's characters. Having a huge chunk of your screen taken up by the portrait is ridiculous. |

Team Occam's razor seems to be living in their own alternate reality, so let me tell you - THESE NEW FORUMS _S U C K_ The performance is terrible, amount of wasted space is staggering, the readability is very bad, the whole "like" button thingy is a stupid idea, bbcodes aren't fully implemented, not to mention the fact that 90% of the feedback from both testing phases was blatantly ignored.
Another half-finished release from CCP! Way to go! |

Your a d*uche - shut up.
Forums are nice work CCP - they look great, good performance on my end, so no issues there, and lots of options.
Me likey.
I would suggest you add a button which says *You are a D*uche* or "Herp Derp Alert!" for posters like RandomToon987 so I can tell everyone else what a complete moron he is, other than just typing it. |

OK, what the hell is going on here?
As usual, I always visit the Forums first before I log into the game. This time I was locked out.
At first I thought maybe my Internet connection wasn't working but hey, I was viewing the Forums.
Then I thought maybe my eve account had expired so I checked and no, still lot's of time on it.
Then I thought maybe I was banned from the Forums, but wouldn't I receive an EMAIL or pop-up message with that information?
Then I decided to check the Information Portal, saw the sticky post about New Forums being alive. After reading the Dev Blog about it, I clicked the link, lo and behold I ended up here at the New Eve Forums, came to this Forum section and thread and after reading it, decided to ask a few questions.
I didn't realize I was in Eve Gate, probably due to the fact that I had only checked it out once when it was first added and never had the need to use it again after that. Anyway, I'm looking for the reply button and all I see is Join, Evelopedia and Forums so I click the Join (Thinking that's how you log in) and ended up at the Eve Download page. Went back to Forums and redid the whole dance again.
After a while I noticed way at the top in small text 'Home', which I clicked and took me to a page where I saw 'LOG IN' at, Geez Louise . After waiting for it to load up my character, I came back here and wow, there's the reply button.
I don't know, maybe I'm still half asleep or still feeling the effects of a bad hangover but I can seriously say that I am not a happy camper. My first thought is - New Forum is not user friendly. It is slow loading, there's wasted space on the sides of the thread, larger page layout with less text space showing. WTF is up with listing the last 10 posts (In reverse order)? No need for that. Another thing, why list 'Likes received' at the top? I don't care if someone else likes or dislikes what I have to say. I pay for an account so I have the right to speak my mind without being judged or rated. We get that already from other players in the form of troll posting.
I'm sure there's other things I'll find but I'm gonna stop ranting now and ask some very important questions which I would like CCP to answer.
How do I check on, edit and or answer my forum post - Faction Standing Repair Plan ?
According to your Dev Blog, it states all the posts in the old Forum are out floating lost in Cyberspace. Since nobody can access those posts, how do we transfer them to this NEW Forum?
This is serious biz which needs to be addressed asap.

Here goes my first round of thoughts about these new forums, from a web developer point of view :
Usability / logic
- The middle click button opening the link in the same window is highly annoying, to say the least. This is something you should never, ever, ever do : preventing users from using their browser like they want to. I cannot stress enough how much irritating this is (not to mention I really fail to see the point of using a javascript call to open a link).
- The "Forums" link, in the main menu, should go in the left navigation, with other EVE Gate internal links, instead of staying in the right menu, which looks dedicated to external links. It should also, of course, looks the same as the others internal links.
- The text preview popup, triggered by hovering a thread link (and link only), should always be located at the same place on the page, regardless of the link length, to avoid the messy feeling when you go down with your mouse above each thread.
- The same preview popup should also be delayed a bit before it appears. One second of hovering should be enough to make sure the user is willingly keeping his mouse over the link.
- Post titles should always bring you to the OP. There's an icon link beforehand to go the last unread post, and pages links as well to quickly access different part of the thread.
- The forum settings hidden in the Profile settings is not exactly straightforward. Maybe a shortcut, next to the Forum Rules and Archives links on top of the forum page would help.
- The "Expand to quick reply to the thread" text somehow suggest I should click there in order to expand the quick reply block, which is, of course, not the case. Please avoid such imperative forms outside of Call-to-Action zones.
- Clicking on the "Preview" button should bring me to the post preview section of the page, because I want to preview my huuuuuuuge post when clicking that button.
- The text contained in a list should be aligned vertically with the start of the first line, and keep the bullet point alone to increase scan-ability in text-heavy lists (like this one).
- The min-height of posts is a bit too much. I think 64px avatars and 100px min-height for posts would be a good compromise.
- The width of the forum posts, on the other hand, is perfectly fine. 500px max for text lines, otherwise it becomes unreadable.
- Extra bonus : The "EVE Technology Lab" should really go under the "EVE Technology and Research Center" category, where it belongs. Things in this forum are often highly experimental anyway.
Features & bugs
- An ignore list would be a must. Not that I don't like you guys.
- The "Remaining characters" counter on top of the message box is reset at 6k when I preview a post, and wait for me to edit the text again before updating (setting focus to the textarea without editing does not refresh the counter).
I'll make another test pass later, but please, for the love of whatever viking god you believe in, get rid of that link-opener javascript. It's driving me nuts. |

Someone over in the 1.4 issues thread beat me to making time to poke through the all the Ajax. Apparently the page is trying to phone home every 15 seconds regardless of whether anything has changed, most probably bogging down the servers far more than necessary.
For more details of the study in coding and network inefficiency, give it a read through over there.
Though it would explain why roughly every 15 seconds the page steals the scroll bar away from me and resets, setting nested scrolling windows back to the top again, making things below the fold very hard to read. |

While his language and behaviour is terrible, the observation that the team persists in merely their own perception is unfortunately accurate, even if only by perception. But hey, that defines reality. We had two public testing rounds, with very constructive feedback, tons of it actually. During those rounds, and between the last one and delivery, it is a bit of a mystery what was actually done, since roughly 90% of constructive, well argumented and managable feedback was effectively ignored.
I'm sure the argument could be made of time constraints and resources. But we saw that delivery has been delayed several times already, just as we have seen with Incursions how such delays can actually be positive, just like split delivery turned out to be. So why not take the time to build for the commercial perspective. Style is one thing, but it is the substance that is the extension of gameplay here. And in that regard, the strict application of style over substance is not a good thing. Especially since style and substance are so easy to combine, with full adherence to usability, as well as common and current standards of online media and communities.
