It's nice to think that the community is looking out for each other. However, I take it you have no real life contact details for this person, which means they didn't want you to have any. Unless unfortunate circumstances are preventing them from logging in I think you ought to respect their choice not to contact you, and leave them be. |

Not sure if I should tell you this...
I know a similar story from about 13 years ago from another gaming community. The fellow was tracked down in the end and discovered he had committed suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate bridge. His mother had recently died and then he lost his job as a game designer. That was the final straw for him... |

good luck.
same happened to a group of us, one of our guys suddenly stopped loggin in, weeks dragged into months, then about a year later 3 of us decided to really look, luckily our mate registered an old forum for us, and one of the other guys lookin got lucky and got an email.
even luckier he used his familys buisness email to register the forum, traced the buisness and got a fone number.
his father told our guy who foned, our mate died on his motorbike the day he stopped loggin in.
i think we were fortunate to find out and to put a real name to our friend, than never knowing and always hoping you would see him log in again, but its always nice to live in hope!

I have found that when people drop off the face of the earth like that, they either had computer problems, internet problems or lack of funds. I would not jump to the conclusion that he has been killed or incarcerated, or even that he is avoiding you, though of course it is possible.
I'm glad I have rl friends who play Eve. That way if I ever die, go to jail, or run off with Jessica Alba (a long shot, granted), they can tell the rest of my alliance what happened. "Max is in Aruba with Jessica Alba".

Let's hope so :)
Reading previous posts I am aware of the 2 different sides on a matter like this: 1) the person in question really wants to be left alone; 2) something might have happened (good or bad).
Both are subject to speculation in this matter. And 2 things can be done: 1) do nothing; 2) do something.
If in case 1, my actions might not be appreciated. I totally took that into consideration before i started this topic. But i'm not willing sitting around and do nothing while people being worried.
I still hope Jill is around there somewhere, read this and might consider to give us a proof of life. After all...there are still people behind game chars, and being concerned about fellow players in my opinion is totally human. A lot of players come and go, some stay, some leave. Some you'll miss, some you don't. Jill is one of those that is missed and loved by a lot of people.
It might be 'sentimental' in some peoples eyes, but then again: * Some people separate their gaming life from RL, by crawling into their chars skin and leave it behind when logging out, * Some people consider their gaming life as a part of their social life. There is nothing wrong with either one of those. If Jill belongs to the first group, he totally won't care about this calling out. No harm done there. If he belongs to the second group, he will care and leave a message. No harm done there.
This is a calling out to a person that is being missed, not a discussion about different game plays and why or why not this topic should have been started. Like I said before; both possibilities are subject to speculation and I chose to do something, hoping that Jill is still ok and that he might contact one of us.
Thank you all for your support. |

Thank you all for your support. You sure have a lot of "ifs" in your posts. IF this person wishes to be left alone, that is the most important IF. IF you don't know, THEN maybe you should just let it ride since you have no way of knowing what the right thing is to do. IF you can't do that, get a book on etiquette. That could help.
Anyone with any sense has already left town.

Point already taken, and already taken into consideration. I'm sorry you feel offended.
I made a decision out of all the IFS i could think of. This seemed the best way. I made my decision, which i'm still supporting.
IF not, then i hope Jill will sue me for this :) Or at least get my vindi to be blown up in an incursion site. No regrets.
If you can't be helpful, please go somewhere else.
Thank you for your support tho.

Allright. This is getting bigger and more general. "How to deal with reports about players missing in action'
After CCP pointed me to authorities, I asked for more details and rules/laws concerning reports about missing players. I want to know the policies/laws/rules about that.
I have contacted several gaming communities about their policies concerning this matter. They do have the players IRL contact info, but they are bound by law and can't contact a player when players are reported missing. Except when ordered by authorities or next of kins. Totally understandable; if players decide to leave a game willingly then their privacy should be protected.
But what if it's not the case of 'willingly leaving'? There is no rule/law for that. Player still paying for his/her accounts, so there isn't any 'concern'. But...some players actually only have games to have social contacts..they (mostly) will only be missed by their fellow gamers. How to deal with that, then?
I asked some communities about that, and about the law/rules. Some responds i got back was: "... I am afraid that our Game Masters are not in a position be able to talk about this subject with great authority"
I then was pointed to their legal departments. That's a bit odd. But i will contact those departments, i want to know the rules and laws, but somehow they're not willing to provide me, except when i contact legal departments 8)
I now am looking for any law/rule about matters like this. In these times, when internet is getting more and more integrated into our lives and communities, there should be a possibility for checking upon players being reported missing in action. This means that there is some authority needed for game communities. There should be something possible, without needing to contact authorities.
Is there anyone out there with legal knowledge concerning this case? Can anyone point me to articles/laws concerning this case? Because this sure isn't the first case, and certainly won't be the last. |

Not to seem harsh here, but true friends would have personal contact info for the missing player. I'm sure his real life friends know exactly how he's doing. It's his virtual make-believe friends that seem to be having an issue here.

I see. So what's your issue by posting this in a topic that is obviously not to your concern? Do you have more info?

I really do hope you find out what happen to your friend and I hope he or she is alright. However I am gonna have to agree with the Peen himself, I am one of 3 former leaders of a very large guild in an MMO we no longer play anymore, though we all still stayed managed to stay in contact. Sensing the immanent death of our "beloved" game, I created a Steam Community Group in which we all joined. Still to this day we have a our Non profit 1000 slot TS server in which all of our members still actively use.
Most leaders and officers exchanged phone numbers from all parts of the world . From North America to Japan , New Zealand and one from almost every country in Europe we msg each other on a regular basis to the detriment of our wallets $$$ This is because no one wanted to lose contact with each other because we all became true friends. Our game, dispite flopping became the vehicle that gave us all the opportunity to meet. People from almost every race , country and religion that all actually care about each other. One had his computer explode and couldn't afford a new one so we all pitched in and the prick had enough money to buy one of the very best Rigs in our group currently ! One lost her job and couldn't afford her rent and without asking she received enough rent to last her until she got back on her feet. These are just a few minor things we have done and would do for each other, though oddly enough I CANT even GET ONE OF THEM TO TRY EVE OUT with me hhahaha seriously not one!
The problem, as many have state is he may not wish to link his online profile with his real life, many dont. We had members that didn't n it sucked but some people just like to keep their private life exactly that , private.
My advice, to avoid losing anymore of those you care about, start a simple Steam Group and add everyone, or exchange phone numbers , hell even apply for a Non profit TS server. This way you will have many other means to contact anyone else who may mysteriously disappear / need a break / get a GF, wife or even getting some strange . Maybe they pitched a perfect game at the bar/club for weeks on end.
Good luck finding Jill - Now I must to try to once again convince some of them to try out Eve , cuz DAYUM this game is almost as good as hot strange! |

If I can save one real person from having some freaky stalker find him in real life when he doesn't want to be found, then it was worth posting in here. And to your question. It is my concern. I feel it is only right to help a potential victim from getting DOXed because someone decided they were friends when they obviously weren't.
If he cared enough to let you know what his plans were, then he would have.
