Anyway, eves been out for quite a few years now, so I was wondering if its too late to get in the game? How much life does eve have left? I dont want to get sucked into the world just to find out its shelf lifes almost up

They're about to add an expansion (free, I might add), with a lot more features. They're also expanding the universe to accomodate the influx of new players they've had lately. Within the last few months, the game has seen record numbers of players trying to log on. They're trying to add hardware to accomodate.
Granted, the numbers aren't as big as WoW's, but the game isn't dead. Far from it.

I don't think EVE is anywhere near its deathbed. The devs are constantly tweaking and adding stuff. Kali is coming out soon. I'm sure you'll see plenty of old-timers proclaiming the end of the golden era and how good it was back then, but since that is neither here nor there, you can probably just ignore it.
By subscription numbers, EVE is at its highest ever, right now. There doesn't seem to be any reason to suspect that the subscriptions will take a dive. So as long as EVE is still making CCP money, you can be sure they will keep it going. It's just good business.
Enjoy your stay!

well thats assuring I was also curious about how long it takes to get up and running on eve. I keep hearing about these learning skills, and how they take months on there own. Will it be a year before I can really start experiencing what eve has to offer?

You can start experiencing EVE from day 1, it all depends on what you do. Look at Innominate Nightmare and his 0.0 Experiment.
The learning skills are really intended if you intend to play this game long term (>6 months), otherwise the time invested in them isn't worth the return.

Learning skills are a very good thing in the long run. When you're starting out though, you space training those up with training more practical skills. You should download the Evemon client (evemon.battleclinic.com), it's a great tool for character planning, and showing you what learning skills will help you out and how much.

EVE isn't going anywhere... those of us that have been around for ages still see the influx of players either as a blessing or a curse... but all in all you need to understand that it doesn't matter if you have 30 million skill points of 1 million skill points it how you use them, at first you should specialize in Cruisers and Frigates... don't make the mistake of going for Battleships right away, they require way too many skills to make them even effective. I remember when playing my Minmatar character I got into a Tempest too fast and my Battlecruiser could kill better than my Tempest could because I couldn't hit anything. Just in example, but take heed... start slow and build up those learning skills and then go from there. Enjoy!

UO has been out for a decade and is still going strong. and considering how CCP is about to spend a fortune on some new Ramsans, i think it's safe to say they expect to be around for a while

There isn't another MMOG worthy of the name out there atm. Of course people flock to Eve :p

Uo lost 70% of it's player base since wow came out, so i wouldn't say it's strong, uo is dying and as soon as they lose enough people will close.
Eve on the other hand keeps growing, that means that it's no where near dying. Untill you see a massive decline over a few months there wont be any reason for them to close it. So even if It started dying right now, you'd still have a few months up to a year or two left to play it.

The only thing that will realy endange Eve, is when another similer game hits the market. At the moment, there are two possible contenders on the horizon. The on-line Star Trek RPG, and The Pirates of the Burning Sea, an historical pirate/sailing RPG game. While both games offer some nice ideas for game play, so far the feeling I get, from fellow Eve players is they may have a look, but at the moment don't offer enough to drag them away from Eve. The only possible game that might have an heavy impact on Eve is if the old Elite game comes on line. It has been whispered about for a long time, but in reality that's about as substancial as The Flying Dutchman, with people occasionally whispering they have seen something about it, but nothing hard and fast. Eve is doing well, and will be for a long time yet, so get yourself back in game and enjoy it

As an old-timer I can say EVE gets only better. The game is long way from deathbed - it's still expanding and number of accounts is still growing.

I started (I think) about 2 weeks ago...this Tuesday might be three, I quite frankly am not sure.
I bought my destroyer this past week and have alternated between getting learning skills up and building my other skills. It's actually very easy to skill up 1 or 2 of the intro levels of a skill while you play and then switch to a skill that needs a longer time before you log...in any case, I'm at around a quarter million skillpoints and having quite a bit of fun already.
I'm mostly doing ratting and missions, with a mix of travelling for good sales and my first researched blueprint is about to be ready...at which point, I'll be supplying my region with many bullets (built from the reprocessed minerals of my dead foes!)
I'm in a small corp that focues on mining, missions and industry in a 0.6 system. I've also made friends already who are inviting me to 0.0 space when I'm ready.
I've played other MMORPGs (EQ, EQ2, SWG, WoW) and am married with kids. So far, this is the most family friendly...mostly because the "grindy" part of developing the character can take place off line.
In short, and looking at the enchancements coming, this might actually be a GREAT time to start playing.

The game started with only cruisers and frigates, now look at the market ship tabs.
I even doubt any other game got so many improvment (unless they released the alfa of course ) -------------------------- I have a constitutional right to write somethings dumb and crazy. |

eve-online is the only mmo to see a steady growth in player base for the last 3 years. You will find that even the 1 to 2 month old player has a place in the so called "end game" content.
Welcome to Eve. -----------

No, you're not too late :)
As mentioned above, EVE sub numbers have been rising, while games it's age (and much, much newer) have been dropping in sub numbers.
That speaks volumes for CCP and the game.
Welcome to EVE :)

Eve is far from its dead bed. CCP are calling a whole day for down time to add in new hardware. This is on the 1st of November. The devs are making new new add-on which is free. They are making new graphics for the DX10 which should make the game look better.
The numbers of people have grown at an almost silly rate when I joined a year ago around 12,000 where online. That number has doubled in a single year. Not even the newest mmorpg can claim that.
In all CCP whould have to be insane to kill EVE in the next five years. They simpily are putting too much money in to the game to then go and end it.

I just wished this game would get more exposure in the US. Many of my mmorpg friends I have told about eve have enjoyed it.. few had heard about it before I said anything.
More people leads to more dev money... as long as they can keep scaling the game.
