I am against the proposed voicechat release if you are going to charge players to be able to use it, I even heard a rumor that you were going to ban teamspeak and ventrilo. That is something Sony Entertainment would do with their project Everquest 2. One of the reasons why I play this game is because it is fun and I don't get the feel that CCP is just playing it's customers for fools trying to nickel and dime them to death. Please don't prove me wrong.
Think, while I'm taking the time to write this--how many other are thinking it but have said nothing?

No, whoever told you that is very misinformed.
My personal opinion on this is that it could be a problem since if it costs extra, not everyone will have it. They say it will solve the problems of 'WHOS TS DO WE USE' or 'WHATS THE IP OF TS' etc. However these will just change to 'I DIDNT BUY THE VOICE STUFF' etc. Unless every person in a gang can be using the feature, it will be rendered completely useless.

Haven't heard about paying to use it, but then again, there would also be TS and Vent. And about the only way that CCP could "ban" the use of either, so far as I know, would be to have EVE scan the system for both, and then refuse to work if it found one or the other. Can you imagine the forum whining going on if that occured?

Meh, whateva, that is what a $30 junk box is for. Hook up TS or VENT to the junk box and boom, there you go, playing eve on the real deal without VOIP protocals and running a second computer to do the VOIP for you.
Of course this is just a rumor and rumors tend to be exploded or untrue in most cases.

Edited by: Akita T on 23/10/2006 05:36:15 1. No they won't, shouldn't and almost couldn't ban out-of-game communication. No announcements nor hints towards that, and no reason for that either. It would be like shooting themselves in the foot with an atomic hand-grenade.
2. Quite the opposite, most probably the feature will come at a modest extra cost to your monthly subscription. At least that's how I remember they announced it initially, and haven't heard anything to the contrary yet.
Can you supply ANY links to ANY official (or at lest, official-looking) web page that supports your "rumor" claims ? Here's the OFFICIAL announcement: Linkage __ Always question everything. Including yourself. My skills (on BIG public site) |

Personally Eve/CCP have enough problems with ingame lag as there systems can't handle it, I can't wait to see them force us to use there own VOIP system !!! even more lag O joy !!!!
As for banning TS and Vent never gonna happen.

From what i've seen it will add more functionality to the chat interface in game like adding voice chat to any window so someone from another corp can join your gang and chat without giving him the chat server ip.
Also you'll be able to see who is talking on the map view when you zoom all the way out and probably other things that havent been mentioned yet.
The lag wont be an issue because it will still be hosted by a third party company, only intergrated into the eve client.
I wont mind paying a little extra if it all works well and adds some nice features but there are still things that will make it fail; no voice chat without logging into eve is the main one, at the moment you can still chat on teamspeak/ventrilo if you cant log on or during downtime. If it's all intergrated then eve will take the voip down with it.

The primary problem with this is that it excludes all of the people that pay for eve with GTCs. ----------

People who don't use the search function or read links to do some research about things they don't know about, should refrain from posting idiotic comments like the above.
As has been posted, in the link a couple of posts above yours. The VOIP is not hosted on the EVE cluster, it is hosted by Vivox. Perhaps in the future you will avoid lodging your foot in your mouth by actually reading the post.

Integrated voice, sounds (no pun intended) very cool. I think this is one of those things that CCP can do that is on the edge of a knife blade. They could cleverly integrate it into the UI so it is very unobtrusive. Or it could be klunky and unfriendly.
I can see some problems on the horizon.
1) EVE VoIP required to join Gangs, Corps and Alliances (not particularly a bad thing, could cause splintering of the community - but we get that with TS/Vent requirements)
2) Immersion breaking effects, BigBadPirate might not sound so big and bad if he sounded like a 14 year old.
3) The price - some people may be able to afford (and more importantly ready to afford) a monthly fee, others may only be able to afford a one off fee or a very small monthly fee.
When it comes down to it CCP are going to have to experiment with it, I am sure they have done the market research amongst the player base.
We will see --

Hey guys,
I have a few questions for the people in the know, if you wouldnĘt mind answering them. With the release of Kali tomorrow (Tuesday 24th October), was you planning on a free beta testing time for the Voice communication add-on?

Thats a good question nelix.
The thing is that this isn't ccp's own code, it is integrated software so there should be very little bugs.
It'll be up to CCP to let us test it or not and even if we found bugs it wouldn't be up to CCP to fix them (most likely).

ThatĘs very true, but still on the other hand CCP should provide a way of submitting a Bug Report either through them or through a 3rd party site, that sends the information back to the company.
You are right though, with them being a 3rd party company, the testing should be done by them, which would make my question redundant.

Edited by: Tek''a Rain on 24/10/2006 00:48:59 from the scraps I saw in video from (i think) the austin games conference thing, the voice is going to be interesting, they had a more or less functioning system running it onsite, gave a little demo. the build-in seen there seemed very clean, though we will have to see how it lands on SiSi and Tranq. (massivly online gamer video?)
btw: free voicechat=1 would be very handy to have enabled when the kali build hits test server. thats assuming it will be included at all and wont be a last second code block dropped into everything else thats been debugged. dunno how it would go, what with the 3rd party involved.
edit: and even Attempting to ban teamspeak or vent to force people onto their micropayment model is more of a Sony thing. the clear pure icelandic air acts to prevent that insanity.

I'm hoping that the easy route/fix for gang communications being taken by CCP is that even if you don't pay for VOIP, you can still connect and be able to listen.
If that is the case, then it's really only the FC's, and various scouts, etc that will definately need the service... not the rank and file. Heck, it may even clear up gang comm's
Personally, I think CCP has put a lot of thought into this, having an integrated voice communications program could turn out to be very beneficial indeed. If it isn't... there is always TS and Vent.

i.e. My corp all chips in and pays a tenner a month (for the whole corp, not each (hopefully!) or whatever) and we can use voice chat.

I vaguely remember 2$ per month for this new feature. For me it's acceptable. I have only one request for CCP: make it usable during DT so we can all chat when waiting for server to get up.

I heard .25 more a month to use the VOIP. And, if it is integrated the way they said it will be, it will allow full use of the new fleet management. You can sit in a squad channel, but also talk into a squadron channel, wing channel, fleet channel, etc. If that's all true, I have zero problem with .25 more a month (even a buck or so is no big deal) for that added feature. If you really have a problem with an extra buck per month, you're budget is probably already too tight to support MMO play and you need to get off your ass and make a living.
