Background: I *am* Benny from The Lego Movie. I've ate breathed and lived in virtual space since 1980 something. EVE however has been like some kind of **** star friend with benefits who shows up from time to time, excites me, tantalizes me and leaves me with VD and a hangover (usually after I ragequit because reasons) I've seen the New Player Experience (TM) in all its forms since about 2006. If anything I'm a perpetual newb at this game. I get EVE 101 and have self-studied but don't think I could pass the final for EVE 201.
So here's my take on Opportunities.
Aura: Hello... Me: Well hello, what would you like me to do first? Aura: Figure out the camera. Me: Sure...(A few clicks and drags later all of the opportunities are completed except for rotating the camera around my ship. A few more frustrating spins around my Velator later and I'm done. This was annoying. I got very little feedback on this part that I was doing what the game wanted me to do in order to check the box)
Aura: ok, now do some other things. (most of the rest of what she asks me to do wasn't too hard. Maybe because at this point I already know it and was just brushing off the rust)
Aura: now lets fit some things to your ship... Me: How? I only have 10k ISK!?!?
THIS is seriously frustrating. I'm all for not holding people's hands, but the completionist in most of us wants to get this tutorial thing over with before we go to the next step (and/or be told what the next step is) But in this case, the least Aura could do is suggest I spend a while doing other things (and/or hand me a reference to the Career Agents, which she hadn't) and told me to come back to this opportunity when I ACTUALLY HAVE a high/mid/low slot fitting to put on my ship. (which the career arcs will actually give me) Sequencing FAIL.
The rest of it, at least in the sequence that Aura handed the Opportunities to me as I asked for more at the completion of each one, was painless.
But seriously, the degree to which I could shut this whole thing off and stumble my way into getting notifications that I had completed an opportunity, tells me that it might as well be left out of the game entirely. This is almost more like an Acheivements system than it is a tutorial.
Also, the free stuff given by the previous iteration of NPE's was nice, and along with the Career Arcs gave everyone the opportunity to build themselves a nice nest egg if they didn't know how to get those things in the first place.
TLDR: CCP needs to go more like halfway between this and the old NPE
Side note: the Opportunity to open a chat with someone resulted in having one of the more amusing convos I've had in ANY online game. I expected to be told to **** off and instead had a nice half hour chat about trading and hauling that I completely didn't expect. (Keep that part, it was fun) |

In fairness, the messaging random people thing isn't really specific to the new starter package. If anyone's doing anything but actual PVP within gun range, it's not like this game's got a lot of edge-of-the-seat pacing and they've probably got more than enough time to talk to you. |

You did better than I. I'm actually a brand new player (like a few hours old). I closed the opportunity window and it was lost forever (or at least until my son could help me find it again).
While they were present I found the opportunities actually understandable and helpful. It's the career missions that left me wondering why on earth they were there other than to give a noobie some sweet loot if they can figure out ... well ... everything. |

I have not done the NPE but I actually never had a problem with the tutorial. It isn't great but it taught me the very basics. Hearing from others about the NPE, I think they are being too vague.
I understand that people were probably quitting because the tutorial would hold your hand and then when it was over you were on your own, but the game is too complex to to not spell out mechanics. The old tutorial I thought gave a good overview of what you can do and how to do it. In short, while I understand it is a sandbox and much of the game is figuring things out on your own or with friends, the tutorial shouldn't force players to figure out actual mechanics on their own. |

If you read the NPE dev blog they specifically mention that it gives no rewards. The previous version (career missions) gives plenty of skills, and also ships, modules, and cash totaling about 10 million ISK. The dev blog feedback thread has several comments from players that rewards are needed to get newbies started.
I guess CCP is still making up their minds about what rewards to give, or perhaps are reluctant to give another 10 million considering that you can still do the career missions and get the "old" 10 million. 10 million is chump change, but when it's given by NPC's it enters the game, and the devs always worry about all of us creating and recycling alts to get rich by collecting the newbie handouts. |

There has been so much talk about these opportunities lately that I'm tempted to fire up SiSi and go testing those my self to see what all this fuzz is about. |

This explains a lot.
I've never played a MMO where the newbie handouts were in any way, comparable to mid-game forget about vet stuff.
It's been my hypothesis that players stick with mining not because they like it but that they can't find better things to do. |

Let's see here.
10 mil isk. per character
Nominal 3 hours to run the whole set of career arcs...that's already down to 333k/hr. I can do better than that in a venture or even in a rookie ship running L1's.
Now factor in recycle time (12 or 24hrs?) that's 10M/15hr or 10M/27hr. Ain't nobody got time for that kind of an earning rate.
Can't remember if you have to recycle to re-run the arcs.
I doubt CCP has anything to worry about the creation of "wealth" from NPC handouts here.
Inflation on the other hand, is technically occurring, since valuable goods and raw isk are being put into the system, but this should be more than offset by the loss of valued items as ships are blown up. |

For what it's worth, it would be about 3.33 mil per hour, but rest basically stands. It still wouldn't make it worth it to recycle chars.
