Hi
Don't want to complain. There's enough of that here every day. So please take the following as me merely saying, "I like what you've done with the place, but have you considered...".
Space as it is now in Eve is pretty cool looking. However, I often find myself feeling a bit claustrophobic. The reason for this can be defined down to one thing:
SpAcE cLoUdS!!!
After a long trip of 25 jumps or more I often find myself longing for some plain old boring black space with just some stars here and there. More like this.
I mean, the cloudring is pretty cool and all. But, ya know, after you've seen it 10 times in 15 jumps with differing shades of colors... Well, it starts to get a little played out.
But what I guess my real issue is, is that all the cool spacey, cloudy, nebula-y type things are cool for awhile, but they seem to get in the way of me feeling the vastness of space. I feel like they actually make things seem a bit closed in. And this is mainly due to the fact that virtually every neato cool space nebula like thing in Eve is nearly always taking up most of the 3D environment so that you feel surrounded by it.
Again, that's not always a bad thing if applied in moderation. In fact most times it comes off pretty cool. It's just that after traveling from system to system to system and seeing quite a bit of the same clouds they sort of lose some of that "Oh wow, cool!" appeal and begin to get more "Aw man, meatloaf again?" sort of feel.
So! I would like to suggest that if the Art guys find some time where they aren't... uh... ya know, as employeed as the code guys during all the Kali testing, maybe they could come up with some new backdrops for our Eve stage.
Maybe some of these just off on one side of the 3D view: Single galaxy waaaaaaaay over there Or a couple of galaxies getting it on over there... Or some of this... Or maybe that cloudring, except off in the distance instead of being stuck in the middle of it. You get the idea.
Anyway... Variety! Eve space could use just a little bit more of it purty please. I know it's alot of systems to decorate, but the pattern reuse with just some color changes are still a little too close together imo. Just a thought.

I agree full, I too long for a nice system or constellation empty of nebula and gas clouds, just for a bit more variety.

If the nebulas were real 3D nebulas like in Freelancer instead of "Skybox"s you would really enjoy them. Skybox should be black background with stars and limited color (far off galaxies, looking down into the core of the galaxy etc), then add system wide non-system-taxing 3D nebulas. The current "true" EVE nebulas are too resource consuming to be able to use them in larger scale. Atm EVE engine uses more CPU resources than resources on your graphics card, its like CPU rendering the engine, I'm no expert on that stuff though...
I have my hopes up for the Trinity engine, and I bet alot of you didnt forget CCP asking for ideas an various effects for "environments".

CCP have explained this before, reason that they are so light and cloudy is because the publishers at the time (simin) wanted EVE to be light and cheerful, not the dark cold desolate world that the Devs longed for. Im sure at somepoint this will all change however.

That said there are a few such places out there :) Few and far between but they are out there. Every now and then I go find a desolate system which is just mostly empty space and stare out at the grandness of the universe without the constant dust clouds to obscure everything.
I swear... the EVE universe must really need vacuuming with all the dust clouds it's got :)

I'd love to have a few more systems in nebula-free bits of space.
I was trying to run one of the COSMOS complexes yesterday. The system it was in had a really bright light blue nebula in the background. The way you approach the rats from the gate, this was right behind them. I could hardly see anything. Modules, rats, targetting countdown, effects, cargo cans, structures - they were all outshone by this bloody nebula.
Yes, they're pretty. But like the OP says, do we have to have them in every system?

Space clouds are definitely cool though. Just in smaller doses. Cant eat Chocolate all the time or you get sick of it, no matter how good it is.

i blame the method used to create the space gfx.

Noticed that there wasn't backdrops on Singularity with the Revelations and the only stars visible are the real systems. It's pretty cool! I wonder if it'll stay that way. __________

I think most of the space in Eve should be void of Nebulae, only seeing them rarely in some systems. -----------

I agree. The clouds look cool and all but... it's really hard to see the status of your modules (among other things) with all the glare.

Agreed, the only reason I use the "widescreen" checkbox in the options setting is so my modules are on BLACK and I can see the status of everything.

It'd be great if there were specific signatures to space, a nebula stretching a full constellation and things like that so you can tell where a picture's taken without knowing the system name, or at least have a clue if you've been there before.

I remember how in freespace 2 you had system wide nebulas now that is a way eve could do it. -----------------------------------------------

While tactical playground sort of things like system wide nebulas would be cool to spice up the action I'd be happy with just a little more variety in the scenery for the moment. BTW, I seem to recall someone mentioning that collision detection might be a future feature (think it was mentioned during the last Eve TV). No more shooting through asteroids or what have you sort of collision detection. Don't quote me on that though.

Sweet! So maybe changes are already on the way. I'll be a little disapointed if all the gas clouds go bye bye but I'm sure I'll get over it.

Ah yes. Because the Nighthawk is black... thus making it overpowered versus anyone who happens to be playing with their UI off.

Death to space clouds!
I'd love them if they were a rare thing, not the norm. Or if there were more variants. As it is we sort of have "oh, a green system, this is a yellow system" and so on. I really wished there was more variation. The could come up with about 8 different textures, Randomly combine them, do some blending and create a hugely more interesting looking place for us to frolick

I dunno about you lot, but I've always felt that eve was a bit over-coloured. My idea is that all the "colourful" backdrops should be in high-sec and become increasingly more desolate the further away from Eve's "center" you get, with the systems being totally black (+ stars/distant galaxies) in the outermost 0.0 systems.

Agreed. Nebulae are great, but they should be rare. As it is they often end up making it difficult to see whatÆs going on.
It would be cool if certain background shots were drawn from different angles (and at different sizes) and placed in different systems. One system might be in the nebula and clouds would fill the entire background. Neighboring systems would see the nebula as a smaller object.
