Before starting a low sec exploration trip last night, I thought I'd use the map statistics to check for players in systems, pod kills etc. I noticed that the system I had been in on my own for about 1.5 hours showed 60 odd "Docked and currently active". I moved through some other systems and there were the same discrepancies. I doubled checked today and found the same differences.
Can someone explain why there are such large variations and what this means for safe navigation or have I missed something ?

I believe the stats are a "moving average" over 1 hr, 30 min, 24 hrs, depending on what the indicated interval is. So if there are 200 pilots and they log off and you log in, the "average" will start with 200 and slowly go down to your 1.
Basically, you can get a vague idea, but you won't be able to get "live coverage", and it's designed that way on purpose. |

Many people use DOTLAN's maps: http://evemaps.dotlan.net/
For the key metrics (jumps, NPC kills, ship + pod kills) you can color the stars by 1 hour or 24 hours of data. With some of them statistics (at least with NPC kills) they even offer a "delta" measure so you can see how much the activity is changing. |

Map statistics are kept delayed like that for a reason. Technically they could give you real time stats but that would negate a lot of the intelligence gathering aspects of this game. The devs want you to have to jump into system to find out what is going on there right now. If they did not delay that with a rolling average as they do then you could just open a map and watch enemy fleets roaming around. |

Once upon a time, we used map stats (via API) to determine if anyone had entered our wormhole system.
CCP later removed jump stats for wormholes.
CCP doesn't want stats to provide too much info. |

Thanks to all for the confirmation that the stats I was looking at are not a good basis for planning a route.
Are any of the standard map stats reliable?

MM You can use map stats to plan a route and map stats are reliable for what they are. You just have to take into account that they are not real time and as such can never use them to make yourself 100% safe but that is kind of the point of Eve. You are never supposed to be 100% safe.
Eve is supposed to be about the risk versus reward thing and if CCP sees something is reducing risk too much and / or increasing reward too much then something will get nerfed.
That being said I don't think there are any third party sites that offer a bunch of info that you can not get in game but there are sites like dotlan that organize it in a manner that is visually easier to follow.
TL;dr Just because map stats can't guarantee that you won't get shot at does not mean that they are useless.
