Edited by: Caol on 26/10/2006 19:16:15 There isn't a "one kill optimum distance" for every ship, each ship has it own orbital distance and velocity. You can find out what these are at the eve-info website.
On a secondary note, most Level 4 missions are in dead space, the gates to these areas will warp you in most of the time at close range. Assuming your use a Raven, making sure you have the correct hardener damage type on your ship, good cap and missile skills and it just turns into a grind for isk.

Make no mistake: you may prefer range but you cannot always achieve it. When deadspace rats aggro on warpin, you get webbed to 10 m/s, and the transversal of orbiting crusiers is beyond your ranged weapons, then you begin to realize this...
Few missions allow you to pick range and using range as a tank requires use of an AB or you will spend more time moving to the next gate than you will killing rats. (and still might)
Why has the raven and dominix become the two most popular mission running ships? Both can tank a helluva lotta dps, and both do not worry about transversal velocity (missiles/drones).
I fit a full tank on my turret based Apocalypse because I cannot use range to reduce dps in many situations I encounter. I use medium and light drones to deal with frigs and cruisers who have too high transversal. And for rats who like to engage at range (guristas) I use tachyons for range as well, to avoid having to AB across the deadspace after the 50 km orbit BS's.
Best ranged tactic? BS guns on BC's, BS's, and the few cruisers too slow to outmatch my weapons' transversal velocities. Drones on the smaller / faster types. I really only use a webber/AB when fitted with close range guns, because when I fit for range I just pick the proper freq crystal and sit there shooting (aka not seeking to dictate range myself).

Hmmm, Dominix + Drones & Drone Mods + NOS = level 4 pwnage apparently...
Though I'll stick to my SW drones and 5 large blasters thanks!
