I don't understand what the point of the election is. -What purpose does having a new leader elected to represent the Gallente? -Does this have any effect on the way the game is played, or is it simply a storyline plot? -Are the candidates actual players, or are they imaginary?

There is no point - The gallente are pointless by definition.
However, Maybe the reason why the election is taking so long is that the slots in the election boxes dont have clear instructions as to how to insert the ballot papers.

This is a question best left to the current Gallante President, Omber Zombie.
Sadly, because of the enormous time gaps between important Prime Fiction events such as this, I would say most people would say this has no effect whatsoever.

It's important for the role-playing part of the community. This event started some time ago with three candidates. They were all different in some ways, and the winner will affect the future way Gallente is role-played.

Uhhhh maybe if you would have let the role players of the community actually participate either through voting, polling or something else? then there would have been a "real" point? Cause as it stands your role playing oportunity provided consisted of what, 3 posts that no one could say or do anything about?
I can understand you want to focus on kali,, but seriously would a poll on the forums have been an impossible 10 second feet? All it would have required is a minor text tweak afterword in terms of the acceptance speach published in the story line.

I'm pretty sure the player votes will decide the winner.
So yes, there is a point.

To show CCP has a sense of humor and heap praise on Abraxxas presumably (See I can RP too, that wasn't criticism at all!): Sepault Farina, analyst at the Center for Democratic Advance, a Sovicou political think-tank, touts today's proceedings as the "grand finale of a drawn-out farce that has been going on for the better part of two years. One can scarcely believe it's finally going to be over."

NPCs afaik. Why CCP bothers with this lore is truly puzzling--the amount of flaming, locked threads and broken hearts that come as a result of "RPing" is staggering. ___

Towards the end of this vid Seleene's idea, one that represents a more visible, consequential, and broadly appealing role for events, is refuted. Somewhat insightful. ___

They could have written something along the lines of the Gallentean pod pilot community being disenfranchised by the authorities for fear of its economic and military might, and the dangers of such a concentration of lobbying power, etc etc.
Not that I have ever done any RP here, but two years of writer's block is really something.

Nope. Gnauton or whatever said that he's just going to wrap up the voting without player input through news articles. ---

How sad it is, Idara is right.
The good thing is that the one who seems to win, is the best choice for us gallente: Mentas Blaque! He will bring order to our people and stand up against the opression from the Caldari militarists and criminals.
And ofcource, the Blaque victory will be most likely a foundation for the coming Factional War Just as the next petty amarrian emperor will be pretty much a nationalist too. Or so I guess
WAR is coming! And everyone is invited!

That was the plan. And indeed, it did start like that. Corporations got involved, and put forward representatives. People ran missions from agents to get vouchers supporting the three candidates. There was lots of player involvement.
Then CCP had to shift manpower elsewhere to keep EvE going and the whole event thing got stuck. And stagnated. So it rather fizzled out. But now Gnauton's back and there's more event people. So these sort of events will be back. Probably.
