Original problem post
18 million ISK to whoever helps me find a permanent solution to my logging problem. It's not a lot to some but it's all my money. I'm a few days off from leaving this game for good, so it's worth a shot. Possibly I'll wait untill 1st of Noverment to see if "new T2 hamsters" will help me log.

As mentioned in the linked thread, I've tried installing eve on my 2nd house computer and I get the same problem. So it can't be computer related.
Also I've tried that doesn't work.

Run EVE through a SOCKS proxy, if that works, its your ISP's problem.

Edited by: Avergil on 28/10/2006 13:33:03 I'll get on testing that right away. I don't know much about connecting via SOCKS proxys, but I hope I'll manage finding my way.
Max Mentor: yes, I've tried a trial account which gets the same problem.

1. Try a different set of DNS servers.
-to run some tests to EVE. DNS Stuff
2. Run spyware scan from:Free Scan
Must be a good reason you cannot enter game. Have you tried a different a character or account?

Exchange all Cables. Networking ones that is. I bet 1 MIllion on top of your 18, that you have an issue with corupted datagrams. Something is broken. check that.

Replaced all cables, that didn't help. What are datagrams, how can I check if mine are corrupted and how do I fix them?

If you're on a laptop, go to somewhere with a free internet connection and see if it works there. I would bet its a connection problem with your ISP, so using another ISP could see if that is the case.

Edited by: Plutoinum on 28/10/2006 14:13:37 Wonder if it's a network problem. But there are so many possibilies. If it happened to me, I'd watch the network traffic with tcpdump on my linux router, don't know what's there for windows.
It can have so many reasons, maybe a MTU/ICMP problem with a badly configured router/firewall that blocks icmp messages. Then a mechanism that's called MTU path discovery fails. As a consequence, large packets might be dropped by a router, if the packets are marked with the 'don't fragment bit'. EVE sends those marked maximum size packets on startup, just checked it.
Don't know, how the EVE client reacts to that like if the connection just stalls and nothing happens. You wouldn't notice it with small ping packets of course.
I've just googled a bit and here is a link adjusting mtu I'd use the IP of the eve server for that test and after adjusting it, you need to reboot of course.
I had that problems once with some websites, but I fixed my linux router instead of adjusting the MTU in Windows. It can be or is probably a totally different problem, but this is at least a chance.

Hi there!
I've got the exact same problem, but first I need to ask you something. When you said you couldn't log on (actually, the other guy in your original post said it, you just agreed with him), did you mean you can't log on permantly like him or that it takes you forever to log on?
With me, it takes forever to get past the "acquiring bulk data" screen after every DT. My reason is simply that I'm on a 56k modem. Hence the speed at which whatever the EVE client needs to do with the servers in unbelievably slow.
If I'm lucky, it'll take maybe 2-4 minutes, although often I'll get 10 minute delays. During this time the little bar thing might freeze, or might go to the end, then restart, then repeat...
So i guess my suggestion is to try to log in, and actually see how long before you can log on, if ever. If you can't, then sorry, no idea. But if it takes you ages, then it implies there's some problem with the speed at which the client is recieving information from the servors.
Without knowing much technical stuff ("where's the any key??"), the problem might be to do with your ISP. In that case I have no idea what you could do, but I guess it might point you in the right direction.

If its not EVE or computer related, then pretty much only possibility is that its network related.

Sharkbait: Already filled a petition yesterday. it's number 434998, though it doesnt appear in my petitions tab. I know its not a corrupt charecter/account though, because it doesn't work when I try to log with a trial account either.
Pellaeon DuGalle: I can not connect at all. It worked until a few days ago, and can not connect no matter how long I wait (get eventual connection lost message after 20-30 minutes)
Plutoinum: that is very good direction! I found a program which lets me monitor network traffic on windows (called tcpdump), and it does appear eve is sending max size packets. That would explain how come I can telnet to game ip and port yet can not log on to the actual game.
As for MTU, I gather it should be set to maximum value of 1480? It seems this is what I have, I'll make sure. As for router configed poorly, it's possible. I have a BFocus 270pr router, it worked well for eve until now, but who knows... I connect to my router at 192.168.1.1, log on, can't find the icmp settings. I'll see if I can come up with online guides on the subject.
What really bugs me is I can't be sure this isn't ISP problem, because they only give me 'your internet is working, the problem isn't with our service' statements.

have you tried clearing your cache, if it's not a character/account problem i'm guessing it's a cche problem
open your eve folder and delete a folder called cache

I have cleared cache, and reinstalled to another directory. Doesn't help. It's good to get a dev response though. :D
Plutoinum: MTU is set to 1480, no change. Still checking the router ICMP config. As for the network monitoring program, I can see the data but I'm in way over my head. Would it help if I sent you a screenshot of my log when I get stuck on "acquiring..." message? Do you have an email?

While I wait, this appears a lot in my bugreport file:
sizeOfMessage=283688 sizeOfBuffer=90304 Reading message, need 283688, got 90304 waiting for more data
And this appears several times. Does that mean my router is not accepting the big packets required? I could just be shooting in the air though, dunno.

from other thread "Finally managed to find an intelligent guy at my ISP customer service, who asked me for the gamename (!), server ip, port, told me to try and connect to game, viewed my network, and said they will "give priority" to this addrses. Now I am no network administrator, but it sounds to me like they have a wide range port block which they're going to open up for eve. He said it would be 24 hours or so, so it's back to waiting."
Currently im pretty much left with waiting till tomorrow to see if ISP can fix this (as I'm 99.9% sure it's ISP problem) And possibly send a bugreport if any means of doing so will become available (since bugreport section is down atm).
Thanks for everybody's help so far.

Yes, probably fine. I thought that maybe a router somewhere else is misconfigured, not your own. To be sure that it isn't the MTU you could just download the tcpoptimizer fromhere. Just click 'largest mtu', enter the IP of the EVE server and let it run once. If it tells you that you can use a largest MTU greater or equal the 1480 that you have set, then the MTU can't be the problem anyway. For me it says "The largest possible non-fragmented packet is 1464 (1492 - 28 ICMP & IP headers). You can set your MTU to 1492" So MTU 1480 would also work for me.
Well, it's probably something else anyway. Hope your ISP or CCP can help you in the end.

There's also a very (very) good antispyware program called Hitmanpro, it runs a bunch of different programs, including Adaware, Spybot and a bunch of others, the site is in Dutch, but the download link top right says all you need to know, and it will install in English, also read up on Hijack This it's really useful. i know its looking less likely to be spyware, but both are good to know about and use, also I use Avast for a virus scanner, it's free and so far very good. I'd say make sure your drivers (audio and graphics) are up to date, check directx is the latest version, and very important is your chipset drivers are up to date as well. www.hitmanpro.nl www.microsoft.com/directx www.avast.com Good luck hope you get it sorted out.
