I'm not very good at this game. I lose alot of ships. I don't have a cadre of alts to rescue me when things go badly. But sometimes, an honorable man with truth and justice on his side simply can't be defeated.
Some of you may be familiar with the Nakugard star system. Tis a populous place amongst the Minmatar stars, one jump from the regional trade hub of Hek, and home to numerous asteroid belts as well as a frequently appearing ice field. Unfortunately, these factors, the latter especially, conspire to make Nakugard a festering pit of evil. A veritable swamp of sloth and gluttony. Day after day the mining vessels drift amongst the ice and rock like bloated grey slugs, sucking up the bounty of the stars until space lies empty around them. It is a bleak and pitiable existence. Often while passing through this den of iniquity, I have witnessed the knights of the New Order carrying out their holy jihad. They have met with some success; through their struggles the local population has been initiated into the mysteries of the procurer, the skiff, the adaptive invulnerability field, even the tech II light combat drone. But aside from this, their life continues as before. Gobbling up rocks and ice every day for hours. Tragic.
I've interacted with the residents of Nakugard on a few prior occasions. Suspect baiting provides a nice respite from the manic frenzy of lowsec combat and the mind-numbing dullness of missions. I don't have the patience to do it full time but every now and again I must indulge, and some of my best results were in Nakugard. Unfortunately my one-time adversary Wobble Melkan appears to have moved on, and the miners have almost totally abandoned the use of jetcans and mobile tractor units. They have learned that such devices tend to attract the wrong crowd. And so it's become a major chore to encourage the denizens of the belts to aggress ANYTHING, much less a ship capable of breaking a procurer's battlecruiser sized tank while absorbing cruiser grade light drone damage. At the cost of several frigates and a Thorax I did learn that the locals do, in fact, possess quite expensive combat vessels, which they will occasionally undock if they suspect you are alone and outclassed. Since the day I watched a fellow undergo trial by CONCORD in a Proteus after shooting one of my no longer yellow cans, I have dreamed of harpooning one of these behemoths. The trick, of course, is actually enticing them to fight you in a reasonably capable combat ship.
I had learned, at the cost of one Enyo, that there is a fellow in Nakugard who prefers to do his mining in a Procurer fit with a scram, a pair of drone damage mods, a full complement of tech 2 light drones, and a stasis webifier made by someone called the Federation Navy. I did not wish to let this affront pass unavenged, but how to go about it? After the untimely death of my assault frigate I returned to the scene in a Gila before the expiration of the engagement timer, only to find that the miscreant had stolen the contents of my Enyo's carcass and fled to the nearest station. And so I went about my business, leaving my Gila docked in nearby Lanngisi in the event I should have further need of it.
Fast forward to the present, wherein I was faced with a choice: Should I spend my time on EVE today attempting to rectify my space pauper status doing grunt work for the space nuns in Lanngisi, or should I pay a visit to my friends in Nakugard and ensure that the conventions on littering are being upheld. I chose the latter, and undocked my newly fitted Enyo with the intention of, if circumstances allowed, testing whether or not a dual rep, cap boosted setup was sufficient to withstand a pvp fit procurer. The ice field had just been cleared and I saw a half dozen barges appear at the station almost simultaneously. I made a quick jump over to Lann and moved my Gila back to the station in Nakugard so it would be accessible in the event of any emergent mischief. I should mention that I'd suspect flagged myself in the ice belt just before it cleared, and upon returning to station had been targeted by my compadre in the combat procurer, who was lurking about outside. I was also aggressed by another local in a stealth bomber, and earlier had noticed a corpmate of the procurer hanging around in a Vindicator, apparently hoping his battleship lock time would suffice to shut down the operations of the regional CODE inspector. So I knew that the locals were stirring, but I had seen the CODE guy's Buzzard alt get blapped by the stealth bomber, the procurer, and a stratios, and I knew there was a Vindicator about, so it all seemed rather much for one man to handle.
But, after I moved the Gila back to Nakugard and quickly made a few safes on the station, a hasty directional scan alerted me that the procurer was at a belt, accompanied by his trusty mobile tractor unit. I recognized the name and knew from a quick killboard glance that he was packing a web, scram, and 200 DPS worth of light drones. But, I didn't really have any other plans for that Enyo, so I warped to the belt, noted the procurer sitting nearby with a full flight of warrior IIs buzzing around him, realized I probably should have plugged that explosive resist hole (bastard had hornets before), locked the offending tractor unit, and opened fire.
I was webbed and scrammed immediately, and quickly learned that 1) dual reps was not sufficient to tank 5 warriors with a 50% native damage buff and damage mods fitted and 2) Light drones are nearly unhittable at close range without a web, even with faction antimatter. The Ishkur fan club might be onto something. And then something called a Ferox Guristas edition dropped out of warp on top of me and started missing wildly with medium blasters while the drones continued their work.

It was a trap, of course. My poor Enyo took over 8000 damage before surrendering my capsule to the inevitable vacuum of space. As I retired from the field to the nearest station, I pondered my options. Primarily, did I want to risk my 400M ISK Gila against two very tanky opponents who were pvp fit and potentially had more friends waiting? I quickly worked out that it was probably just the two of them, as nothing else had showed up to hop on the Enyo killmail despite having ample time, and that because they'd gotten a kill already and had seen me dock the Gila earlier, they were probably already safe inside the station, ready to gloat. I didn't see either pilot listed in guests so I brought out the Gila anyway and warped back to the belt, knowing full well I was wasting my time.
I landed in the belt about 3000 meters from the barge and the battlecruiser. I was in a hurry to possibly exact vengeance on fleeing foes so I'd warped to zero before Dscan informed me that they were still there, waiting. Being webbed and scrammed in close proximity to a blaster fit battlecruiser might have brought my Gila to an inglorious end, but fortunately the Ferox pilot was asleep and the procurer decided to tackle the nearest asteroid instead. Habit, I suppose. I flipped on my MWD and was over 10k off when I was snagged by a web and a warp disruptor from the barge. I won't lie, this was a terrifying moment. I was going to fail again and on an epic scale this time. I fought panic long enough to realize that my MWD was still active and carrying me away from the hostiles at a steady 500 meters per second. And the Ferox was clearly NOT packing a microwarp; he was barely moving and his blasters were hitting nothing but empty sky. The warrior IIs were upon me but my Gila's prodigious shield buffer was untroubled. I activated my warp disruptor on the barge, reasoning that he was more likely to try and run and I knew he liked to pack the occasional bling. I had a cap booster to keep my MWD running as the Gila's cap life is **** (keep in mind if you fly one) and I settled into a comfortable 20k orbit as my augmented Hammerheads and light missiles began ripping into the Ferox. The game, as they say, was afoot.
I'd chosen to engage the battlecruiser first. He was unable to hit me from so far away, but I didn't want to face those blasters at close range if I screwed up and got tackled or he remembered he had a microwarpdrive. And I hoped he would be packing the the highsec standard tank of meta 0 shield extenders and the odd civilian booster. It was not to be, the Ferox clung to life for entirely too long and as I switched my disruptor to keep him from warping off, the procurer was able to escape. All told the battlecruiser soaked up around 50k damage, and I assumed that would be it for the day. Barely a fair trade for an Enyo unless he was packing shiny mods, and not really worth risking a Gila for.
Of course the entire time my drones were eating the Ferox I was watching Dscan and waiting for the other shoe to drop. But apparently the other local do gooders had logged off. The procurer pilot was kind enough to return to the field, still in his frigate slaying barge fit, just as his battlecruiser escort became one with the void. I pointed up the barge fast as I could, and that vicious pair of augmented drones shredded him in a matter of seconds, revealing the weakness of using up that vessel's mid slots for tackle mods. And that was that, or so I believed. A cursory check of killmails revealed caldari navy power diagnostic had dropped from the Ferox and a Fed Navy web from the procurer. An acceptable 180M or so worth of carnage. All that remained was to crack open the MTU which had been busily vacuuming while the battle raged. I wasn't leaving 100M worth or green mods sitting in the belt. The cloud of Warrior drones would remain as a monument to my glorious triumph.
And then I noticed something on d scan, within 1 AU, that hadn't been there before. A Vindicator, probably the one that was trying to station camp the local ganker earlier, landed on grid about 30k from my ship. It was decision time. I'd had a good run and if this guy wasn't a baby seal and had faction webs and an MWD fitted, I was going to die in a fire. Then I realized it was the Ferox pilot reshipped, I still had an engagement with him, and assuming nothing else showed up this was going to be a really good day.
I pointed the Vindi and settled into a 20k orbit while my drones and light missiles started to deplete his surprisingly thick shields. And I kept a wary eye on dscan, praying that the procurer pilot was out of the fight permanently and that Bob would allow me this gift. And then I noticed that the Vindi wasn't the only one losing shield at an alarming rate. His blasters were GRAZING my cruiser for 400-800 per volley at 20k. This was getting to look entirely too much like a fair fight, and assuming he was running the standard armor tank, it might be curtains for my battle worn Gila. The strength of his shields suggested he might have undocked his incursion boat however, and while I could have disengaged at any time, I stayed on field even as my ship's shields failed. I was sitting comfortably at about 35% structure when that monster finally died, and I whispered a silent word of thanks to whoever coined the saying "never leave home without a suitcase." Damage Control II saved me in that last tussle.
My scanner was clear, except for a few barges in surrounding belts that had been there from the outset. I scooped the rest of the loot, cursed the Vindi pilot for being the ONLY Vindi flying carebear in highsec without bling in every slot, waved to the neutral Enyo that had stopped to watch, and ran to the nearest station as my hull trailed fire behind it. A billion ISK in carnage, 100M in loot, and my dearly departed Enyos avenged. |

This was after a month of just losing ships constantly.
The killmails are not up on zkill yet or I would have posted them.

^^ Loosing ships is a very important part, maybe even the most important part of the journey. It makes the inevitable win epic and makes you crave more content, interaction, fun, ...
Enjoy it while it lasts and don't let the belvars and doofuses of this universe rain on your parade.

Great story, as previously mentioned loosing ships does not make you a bad player. Instead it teaches you to be something more with every loss, assuming you learn and adapt from your mistakes.

I enjoyed this read and frankly I'm impressed with the chutzpah you've shown good sir. In the future I would recommend the Pirate Story Thread as this is exactly the kind of love that place needs so much... it's been kind of barren there lately.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can manually speed up zkill's results by posting the kills there directly either via CREST or using your API (not sure of which or if it's both there, but I know one of those buttons does something!)
I keep a thoughtgun next to the bed, fully loaded with nerdshot. Just in case.
