my friends have told me there is a way that ships cant lock you other than multispecs.
they say dampeners?!
what are these all about, sensor or remote?
whats the difference, how do both work and are they effective?
i am close to an ishtar and thought about these if what my friends tell me is true?
pls any info would help?!

Edited by: Kano Sekor on 30/10/2006 15:52:03 They work so it takes longer time for a sensor dampened ship to lock on you however if he is already locked on to you when you damp him you need to break his lock before youre dampeners get that specific effect (either by going out of locking range that is also worsened by dampeners or by breaking the lock with ECM:s).

sensor dampeners are opposite of sensor boosters... they lower scan resolution of opponent, thus lowering his max targeting range + lockspeed. if you are close they are ineffective cause he will still be able to lock you -.- ---

If your saying what i think you are, then your wrong. Even if someone has a lock on you, when you sensor dampen them and you reduce there locking range far enought to where they are too far it will break it. I am not sure exactly how you meant that but if you meant the same thing i just typed, np

Other than the standard rtfm response...
A Remote Sensor Dampner (RSD), will do two things. It reduces Scan Resolution (so it takes longer to lock) and it reduces Max Targeting Range. If you're 50km out from a target with a max lock range of 80km, a single 50% RSD will cut his max range down to 40km, which will break his lock on you. They do not prevent relocking (if he was able to approach within 40km again).

They reduce the target's locking range and increase the target's locking time.

As a gratuitous addition to the above, SDs are commonly used by cloaking ships as a more cap-effective means than ECM to break locks. Hence, then can re-cloak, barring any other ships having lock.

Im assuming you know what a sensor booster is and what it does for your ship (extends max lock on range and makes you lock faster) ? A Remote Sensor Dampener does the opposite effect, on an enemy ship. They are nice on certain ships and in certain situations, but they have their drawbacks as well.
For one thing, they are almost useless at close range, especially if youre only putting 1 or 2 dampeners on a target. Once a target is close enough, the reduced lockon range wont matter, and skills and sensor boosters could possibly offset the slowed lock time.
They are also less useful against smaller targets, for the same reasons as above. A smaller target will probably already have you locked, so if hes close enough your dampeners are useless.
Personally, on an Ishtar Id put ECM instead of dampeners, but I may change that opinion once Kali hits depending on how things shake out.

It lowers their range and makes them take longer to lock you.
If you're in a mid to long range battle, they're gold. They're even fairly useful for really close range pilots- on the approach you can make sure they can't shoot you until you're in range, and when you get into range they'll have to sit through a long locking cycle before they can start firing back.
Enough of them on one target and it might aswell be a complete ECM lock-down, the amount of time they will take to lock you. -----------------------------------------------
