My goal here is to present the Pros and Cons of the new map system, please read carefully and consider each item before posting. Also unless you have something constructive to contribute (for example, a Pro or Con written concisely and politely) please refrain from posting. This isn't a flaming thread, an angry mob thread, or anything similar.
Pros: 1) The new map is "prettier." 2) Richer colors in the Universe map. 3) Better animations. 4) Supposedly "seamless."
Cons: 1) The map is much slower. It is more demanding in terms of system resources. 2) The map is extremely buggy, especially in terms of the graphical elements. Notably moving in and out of the universe map causes the warp graphics, stargate particles, and engine trails to be magnified and directionless (so they are spawned pointing in random, unexpected directions and are huge.) 3) Tooltips display way too much information. The new graphical style of the tooltips is very nice, but there is simply far too much text displayed. 4) Normal play, even without accessing the map, is directly affected by the buggy map. Things such as system backgrounds not appearing properly until looking at another object and then resetting the view (keep in mind this is in the Inflight view, never having opened the solar system or universe map.) This con isn't a permanent negative mark since it may be addressed by QC as Kali approaches its publishing date.
Conclusion: The map, in its current state, hinders smooth gameplay. The concept is beautiful, the graphical style is wonderful, everything about the appearance is spot-on (with the exception of the aforementioned text-spammy tooltips,) but the implementation feels a little half-assed. Assuming all of the graphical bugs are ironed out (basically any sort of unexpected display, including the adverse effects on normal Inflight play) there is still the performance issue. Unless the routines involved are streamlined significantly, using the map is akin to opening the old scanner without ticking "use overview settings", with a 360 degree scanning arc and maximum range, and then accidentally clicking scan in Jita. It really is that bad, in terms of the jerkiness and performance, but everything else (that means the new style and interface) is great.
I'd love to see what other people think about this, and whether they too have experienced strange interactions between the Inflight and solar system or universe display elements. -----

I would love to give my opinion but as it is, I cannot get the map to do anything. I have opened it but see no controls. It also does not move when I use my mouse and drag in the normal fashion. Perhaps I'm doing something incorrect, I dunno.

Yes, the map needs a lot more love.
I was trying to use it and when the map is flattened, it becomes entirely useless as you can't move around normally. It's even more useless in 3D mode :(
It's beautifully done, but it eats system resources like crazy. Also, ditto with the info spammage - it's hard to see what you want.
Also, the directional scanner needs to be integrated with the system map :)

Edited by: Anathema Matou on 04/11/2006 11:43:17 Another problem is that it does not replace the F11 map at all (which disappeared in the current Sisi client).
At least for me, there is two main properties of the F11 mapbrowser which are lost in the Revelations client:
- quick-and-easy navigation
Once you get used to the F11 map, it is is very easy and fast to navigate your immediate surroundings and even inter-regional for your most frequently used routes. By the time the F10 map (regardless of new or old) or your assets have loaded, you are already done setting your destination in the F11 map.
- system-sidemap
Every cov'ops / recon / survey pilot knows how important it is to keep track of both your immediate surroundings (main view) as well as the system map. While the system scanner can perform that task, it wastes too much space on the screen. The F11 map on the side is again just perfect for this task. Besides, IIRC the system scanner is probably replaced with the F10 map now, so not available either.

The new map looks absolutely great. There are a very functionality issues that need to be worked out though.
It would be good to be able to lock the system map at the centre of the system (the sun), and be able to zoom out from there and rotate with that as the focal point. Say to about 40AU past the last stellar object.
It seems a bit fiddly at the moment, with the map warping about to centre on things all over the place. A single centre point would be very useful. It's a map, after all.
The current zoom ranges for the system map are very limited in terms of how far you can zoom out. You can see less using your entire screen in the new system than you can do with a tiny portion of your screen in the old system.
As someone else mentioned, it's also taking a lot more time to warp around to different objects than with the previous scanner. In addition, it's harder to get an overview of the system/get your bearings.

Edited by: Ralinn on 04/11/2006 12:07:00 I'm not sure if this is intended or a bug, but a minor thing I find very weird (annoying) is that you have to press F10 or map on the sidebar to make the tabs appear - why not just show them all the time?

Ugh!
Keep the galaxy map pointing north please! When i'm reading a map i don't turn it upside down just because i'm facing south...
Yes I know about "flatten" but I would much rather scroll around the map and see the relative depths of the systems without having to somehow try to find "North".
Also, kill the silly spinny swooping animation of the flatten map option, its about as useful as all the frills built into windows - slide/fade menus, my arse!
The current galaxy map has a very handy "Reset Camera" option which works fine. Keep it in.

The map is noce, but setting an 'instant' transition still goes through the whole animation really quickly, but still slow enough to be noticable and take a couple of seconds. The whole animation is as follows:
1) Zoom out to solar system view 2) Zoom out to 3D Map view 3) Aut-rotate map to standard position 4) Flatten Map
I would much rather simply fade to a flatten map without the animation like we do currenty. When I press F10 its because I want to know where I am, set a destination and plan a route, not to go 'oohh' and 'ahhh' at a pretty animation every time.

Tooltips are nice, but I'd prefer them to require you to hover over the star (or other object) for a bit longer. Moving the mouse around the universe map to move and rotate results in dozens of popup info bubbles.
One thing I was hoping for was to have the currently highlighted information also be visible in the in-flight view. IE: lines showing your current autopilot route, pod kill blobs, etc.
And to really call it a "seamless" map, it should be... errr.. seamless. That is, if I scroll the mouse wheel back far enough in one mode, it should "switch" to the next mode out. Likewise, scrolling in should move you through the modes without having to hit the end-stop and go click a button. Perhaps make that a config option, as some folks will probably want the end stops.
Looks fantastic though, keep up the good work guys!

I dont particularily see a use for the new map view..... How will it change our gameplay? I cant imagine even zooming out unless im bored and want something pretty to look at. Definitely not on serious ops.

I haven't been on the test server, so I'm only basing this on pictures from dev blogs; but doesn't the map show locations of bookmarks in system? That sounds like a definite PRO to me.
