Edited by: Von Schnopp on 05/11/2006 17:21:15 I popped an idea to my corp mates today and they suggested I'd share it on the forum, maybe it has been up for discussion before but here goes:
I think we could make the fitting of ships much more enjoyable and easy. We should use the spare space in the upper right corner in the Fitting view to add a list, from which you can choose equipment - the general idea is to liberate us from having to move around, re-size,and drag stuff from that pesky item window, it can be a nuisance at times. Everything in one view.
How?
Incorporate the fetching of modules into the fitting UI by adding a list divided into module categories in the upper right corner. Whichever makes it easier, either we use the same categorizing/catalogue system as that of the market item database "Guns and Bays" etc, or we simply use a number of "parent" categories in the list for every type/category of equipment, weapons assigned to one, ammunition and missiles into one etc etc.
By default, this list gathers module info from the item hanger as it's probably the most common source, but the individual user should also be allowed to customize this as to have the list get module info from any local storage hangar to which he has access, items, corp hangers, containers etc, all within the station perimeters of course.
How the mounting is done is of less concern, either you double-click on it in the list and it pops into the first free slot on the ship, or you drag it from the list and mount it on a free slot of you choice.
Another thing that would be nice, and it's not dependent on the aforementioned change, would be to let the user set up a number of profiles/presets with different ship setups as to save time and in the long run - carpale tunnel sympthom. ;)
To top this off, the fitting interface should recognize the type of ship you're fitting and exclude any modules from the source that are irrelevant.
Example: You're fitting a Raven, which is a Caldari battleship, so you should go for modules that gives you bonues, hence, you won't see any weapons or modules dedicated for other racial ships for that reason. In this case, that'd be modules like lasers, artillery, LADAR ECCM etc etc. If you, for some reason, would like to put a 1400mm arty piece on your Raven, you will still be able to by dragging it from the item list as per todays routine.
My 2 pennies. Let me know what you think, sticky status maybe?

if implememnted nicely this coul dbe great although i wouldn't censor guns as many people fit (for instance) projectile guns on ships that don't get bonuses to them

Beside this part right here where the system will sort it by the type of ship; your IDEA is AWESOME. Leave this part out and /signed! ------------------------------------- Proud member of G Guild! |

Thanks for the input guys, at first I thought this thread was shot dead, buried and forgotten in the bottom corner of "Ships and modules" but I see there's hope still.
I can agree with you about that last idea, race filtering modules is not a necessity and like someone pointed out, some pilots do fit their ships with non-racial specific rigs.
However, with a twist to it devs might get it to work, simply by allowing the player to choose wether the filter should be active or not by clicking a small checkbox, on or off. My point was simply that a guy with a huuuuuge stockpile of loot might be better off not having to scroll through piles of junk before he finds his preffered module etc.
This is just a minor change to the UI for us but it might mean devs need to put in some serious hours actually doing it for us. On the other hand, the UI has a great impact on how efficiently the individual player can use his/her time playing EVE.
All jay-sayers sign this please!

EXCELLENT IDEA!!! I love it. Especially the presets thing so that you can just select a preset and have your ship automatically fitted with it so you don't have to manually refit a ship everytime it gets blown up. /signed --------------------------- Aimez- "oh ****, this is empire......."

Not what I've seen, regardless, CCP should take notice and take this idea into consideration. Would be nice with more feedback.

Insted of a race selection, why not have a saveable custom fit? I.e insted of manually changing setups on the ship, 1 click and it takes the stuff from my hanger and fits it as required. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |
