Dont know if this is the right place but.....
Well I have been holding out to see what sort of price a 8600 would cost, but looking about I see that the G80 from nvidia will be PCI-E only I need an AGP carp.
I can't afford to upgrade me modo atm, planning on doing that late next year.
So for ú100 I can get either:
Ati X1650Pro 512Mb or Nvidia 7600GS 512Mb
I am used to Nvidia, I have read a few reveiws and well....depending on what you play you get different results...but Eve is what I mainly play :P
I do play the occasional new game (or demo).
Whats your thoughts? What should I get? ------

Edited by: Trioxis on 14/11/2006 18:56:57 You should get a Mobo with PCI-E slots... and yes I know you can't afford it right now, save up for it.
EDIT: Or get the Geforce one... seems ok to me.

Personally i'd go for the Geforce but that's because i'm biased, dirty dirty ATI ptoo ptoo. If you can manage though then save up for a new mobo because PCI-E is really the thing you want to be using, at the moment there may seem to be little reason to upgrade but that's because there are no cards which actually fully use the capabilities of the Socket..but there WILL be some day.

I'm in sort of the same position as you; however I am upgrading to a PCI-E board and going with one of the PCI-E Gforce models. Eventually I'l get a good one :|

Look for head to head comparisons of the 7600/1650.
Also, keep in mind the overclocking potential of both cards when looking for reviews. .

personal experience from ati vs nvidia has been pretty much one-sided for me, since I had a miriad of problems with nvidia, but since I've switched to ATI, the problems have been none.
plus, dunno why, the colors that all my ATI cards produce seem more deep than NV's. -------

I'm definitely biased, and for good reason. In January 2004 I spent a fair amount of cash on an ATI Radeon 9800pro. I thought it would serve me for the time to come and I wouldn't need another card in a few years. Unfortunately, in Febuary of 2005 (1 year after warranty) the card died. Strange boxes of colors started appearing on the screen and the computer became unusuable. I blew the dust off of my old GeForce 4 Ti 4200, and replaced the card. The thing worked right away like a trooper, and I have been using it until now.
The experience taught me two things. The first is that ATI does not know how to build cards to last beyond warranty. The second is that I should not pay $400 for top of the line video cards anymore. The cost of potential 1 year failure is too much. Right now I am looking at one of the later GeForce models from last year that go for $120-$200

I am also biased and would say go for ATI.
My last 2 cards have been Nvidia and I have not been pleased with either. My next card will deffinately be ATI.

I say nVidia all the way, I am biased, and really for no good reason, attempts to say who is better are futile, pick a brand and stick with it unless they really fall behind, keeps things simple. ----------

Looks like I'm going for teh 7600GS, pritty much all the revies I read where vs the x1600pro (the x1650pro is basically a OC version of the X1600).
I have used Nvidia ever since the GeForce 2 :P and had no issues with them.
Yes I know PCI-E is best to upgrade too, but thats for a whole new PC I am saving for. The 7600 will be a stop gap for atleast 1 -> 1,5 years till I save up ------

To be honest, if you added up all the problems people have had with nVidia and ATI the distribution would probably be pretty equal.
Hardware wise, I've never had any trouble with nVidia (besides one card which was replaced in 2 weeks and worked perfectly since) so I haven't seen a reason to change.
When it comes to drivers, I'm sorry but nVidia are still miles ahead of ATI when it comes to stability and things like OpenGL support, tools and so on.

I wish this was true. I had 2 ati cards in the last 6 years and never had any problems with them. My new card is a nvidia (7800GS) and i regret that i bought it. Only good driver for me is the 84.21 , all the newer drivers give problems when i want to watch video (mpeg, divx, avi)
Nvidia made some mistake in the newer drivers but they are unable to help me with this problem. And i get graphical errors in eve with this 7800GS, never had that with ati. Next card is Ati

if you dont need shader 3.0 take the x850 xt (ati) if you need it take the 6800gs (nvidia)
both got 256bit (dont know the rigth word in englich) ram-connectors?!?
128bit sux if you got 128bit the 512mb ram isnt so much better like it sounds compared with 256mb versions..
greetings
