Hi there,
firstly please don't let my character's age fool you - I've only got weeks actual game time (have had many years off!)
My character is c. 8M skillpoints, 5 of those in Drones (I loves them drones)
I've been playing solo on L3 security missions and some breeze by in my Vexor but a couple of times I've lost the ship really fast - realizing too late I'm dealing with a couple of interceptors and just get pumelled to death while they lock me down.
So - what are the basics I'm getting wrong?
Will T2 drones deal quickly enough with them and if so do they need to be small drones or will mediums do for an Interceptor? (I'm guessing heavies will be too slow?)
I've been trying to armor tank the Vexor - is that the best approach?
What other info do you need to know if I'm doing anything dumb - skill tree?
sincere thanks from a returning noob for any pointers.

Do you have drone damage amps fit? = more drone dps
Level 3s might be time to consider a myrmydon(Sp?)
Target any frigate with 3 names like dire pithi scout and have your drones kill them first. That way you can warp out as needed.

Thanks - yes it might as simple as just spotting the interceptors and targetting quick enough I suppose |

I think the upgrade to a Myrm is excellent advice. I'd swap 1 tracking mod for a target painter if it were me, and I'd keep a 'back up' flight of 5 more hobs in there..

While, I don't know your budget a T2 Gila will complete pretty much every level 3 mission blind folded.
[Gila, test] Drone Damage Amplifier II Drone Damage Amplifier II Drone Damage Amplifier II Drone Damage Amplifier II
10MN Afterburner II Adaptive Invulnerability Field II EM Ward Field II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II

Infiltrator II x2 Vespa II x2 Hammerhead II x2 Valkyrie II x2
Omni-Tanked, 237 ehp/s vs mordu through 304 ehp/s vs angel, Cap stable(not even trying), 835 dps(685 from hobs).
Use missiles on frigs and medium drones on cruisers+ until you run out of targets. Estimated price under 400 mil. You can probably take it into level 4s and speed tank most of it(killing webbing frigates). I haven't really bothered though since I have other options. This is just my level 3 standing farming boat.
PS. The empty high slot, I personally throw in a small armor repper to fix up my drones and it's an exact fit. Meta 4 to taste, it'll make it easier to fit. |

Thanks folks.
The Gila is way out of budget but I had been thinking about it (PLEX -> ISK) It'd need a significant investment in skills too - currently have very little in missiles or shields

In missions generally the best thing to do (and this is generic) is to take down the faster and smaller ships first. This is easier at range if you are using guns and more effective (though not as much) when using drones.
The reason for this is that as they zoom towards you their transversal will be low which means that tracking is not an issue and it should simply be a straight shot.
Once they are in under your guns the best strategy would be to web them down (and TP) if you're able.
If they are webbing you and you, even in a small capacity, rely on speed tanking then you must take them down earlier.
Keep a group of small drones just for the frigates.

Don't feel too bad, there are quite a few posts where people are having trouble using a Vexor in L3s.
So it's probably not you.
That leaves only one thing left then, the ship itself. Maybe there's a better ship that could be used as suggested.

Like others have said, normal people use bc for l3. Once you train up to t2 ships, you can bring smaller ship to do l3, but until then t1 bc is the way to go.

Newer player with lower skills = battle cruiser for level 3's, since a lot of you SP is in drones here are some Myrmidon fits. In all of the fits that follow change the hardeners for each mission, trying to omni tank is not recommended when you have low skills.
This one is shield tanked but works well in case you want to go that route. Provided simply to be as through as possible. [Myrmidon, Shield Mission]
4x 220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II (Fusion M) Drone Link Augmentor II
3x Large Shield Extender II 2x Adaptive Invulnerability Field II - change per mission
4x Shield Power Relay II 2x Drone Damage Amplifier II
2x Medium Capacitor Control Circuit II Medium Core Defense Field Purger I
5x Hobgoblin II 5x Hammerhead II 4x Bouncer II 4x Light Armor Maintenance Bot II
A twin rep armor fit that I like for a level 3 Myrm. Anything T2 that you do not have skills for change to a meta level or faction equivalent as your budget allows. [Myrmidon, Twin Rep Mission]
4x 220mm Vulcan AutoCannon II (Fusion M) Drone Link Augmentor II
3x Cap Recharger II Tracking Computer II 10MN Afterburner II
2x Medium Armor Repairer II 2x Drone Damage Amplifier II Armor Kinetic Hardener II - change per mission Armor Explosive Hardener II - change per mission
Medium Nanobot Accelerator II Medium Auxiliary Nano Pump II Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I
5x Hobgoblin II 5x Hammerhead II 4x Medium Armor Maintenance Bot II
Here is a single rep fit that a corp mate uses for lvl 3's. Again if you cannot use the T2 change to meta level or faction per your budget. [Myrmidon, Single Rep]

You don't need missiles for a gila to be effective, just fit for max drone damage and your hammerheads would wreck any Lev 3 mission dishing out 600+ dps.
Btw 2 Gilas with drones only completely crushes any level 4 mission (well at least the way I fit my Gilas). |

Forgot to add, for small inties you'd want to fit a web or TP.

for npcs the answers get kinda funny. Honestly heavies may be the best option as npcs like straight lines, andslow orbits, and that lets the heavy drones catch up and hit for nearly max damage. Lights are probably the next best option, and it has been a long time since I've used medium drones.
there is also the issue of drone aggro. elite NPC frigs will shoot at any drones, bigger classes of npcs will shoot at other bigger drones. that might change the decision for which is best. Because of this I really like sentry drones, as they do nice damage, hit at range, and you can scoop them if they take damage.
I in general agree with the myrm advice. I like BCs for lv3s

Also, due to drone changes. Tech I drones are good enough. Tech II does offer better tracking/hp/etc but the difference is not as large as it once was. I would say make that a low priority and get your more pressing skills, if any, in order. |

I see you like drones but IMO they take too long to get to the target and when they get aggroed you waste more time pulling them, I have been destroying level 3s with this:
[Deimos, Level3s] Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Tracking Enhancer II Corpum C-Type Medium Armor Repairer
Republic Fleet 10MN Afterburner Tracking Computer II, Optimal Range Script Tracking Computer II, Optimal Range Script Tracking Computer II, Optimal Range Script
250mm Railgun II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge M 250mm Railgun II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge M 250mm Railgun II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge M 250mm Railgun II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge M 250mm Railgun II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge M
Medium Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizer II Medium Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizer II
Hobgoblin II x10
You won't need any additional tank for Therm/Kin NPCs, most of the time you don't need any for EM & Exp NPCs as things die way before they get in range and I usually take little or no damage, but for the harder ones one or two damage specific hardeners are more than enough.
Reliably applies damage (593 dps) out to 60KM with Anitmatter and projects out past 100KM with Spike (max targeting range is 106KM). Switching to tracking scripts allows you to kill the interceptors before they even get close and in the event they do, you still have your hobs.
Tengu and Proteus do this better but this takes less time to skill and costs less to use a Deimos for similar performance.

I would take a quick look at this EVE-Survival : HomePage . before you start your missions. This way you can figure out what stuff you shouldn't shoot at (Triggers).
EVEBoard ...Just over 20million skill points, each skill was chosen for a reason. I closed my eyes & clicked another skill to train... "BINGO...!!!" ... "This time i got something usefull"

Myrmidon is a sensible upgrade path Ishtar is a more expensive option (ISK and SP's)
both are native Armour tankers that also have effective Shield Tank alternatives
which then makes the Gila another viable alternative, you'd just need a few missile skills to be trained.
eve is all about the long haul ... isk is just a tool, don't be too attached to it
personally I'd recommend you train for ALL 3 of the ships mentioned The drones must fly !!

Meanwhile, until you get a bigger ship, deploy Warriors (Minmatar drones are faster and track better) when fighting fast small stuff instead of Hobs and fit mods that improve tracking and damage. |
