Thanks to the hard work over at both WineHQ and CodeWeavers, EVE now runs directly on Mac OS X through CrossOver. CrossOver for Mac is currently in beta right now, so you can try it out for free. Preorders are $40.
The current beta requires a few modifications to work (see Stefan D÷singer's November 15th post here for step-by-step instructions. They look more complicated than they really are, and Stefan says that the next beta will work out of the box.
Performance is remarkably good. There are a few quirks described in the forum thread, but nothing so far that's convinced me that I need to keep my Bootcamp partition. Give it a shot, and don't hesitate to let the CrossOver team know how fabulous they are. _UH_

Very good news for all of us Mac users! I have tried this approach, and it works well (with a few caveats).
Here are the original instructions from CrossOver forum:
1) Install EVE online into a new winxp bottle (win2000 can be problematic). It is highly recommended to use a seperate bottle due to the virtual desktop setting we set later on. Use the unsupported software installer for the main game, and any patches you want to apply.
2) Click Programs->Run command, and select the new eve bottle. Enter "winecfg" into the textbox and press run.
3) Press "Add Application"
4) Enter "eve.exe"(without the quotes) and press "open".
5) Make sure that eve.exe is selected in the list, and go to the libraries tab
6) enter "rsaenh" and press Add.
7) enter "wined3d" and press Add. Ignore the warning that pops up, and say yes.
8) Go back to the Applications tab
9) Add "ExeFile.exe" like in step 3 and 4, make sure it is selected. Then go back to the libraries tab and add "rsaenh" and "wined3d".
10) Go back to applications, and select "Default Settings" from the list.
11) Go to the graphics tab
12) Activate "Enable a virtual desktop", with the size 640x480
13) Close winecfg by pressing ok
14) You should see the "run command" dialog again. There seems to be a bug(can't enter a new command), so you have to close it and open it again. (see step 2). Select the eve bottle, and run the command "regedit".
15) Regedit should come up in a small desktop window. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/AppDefaults/ExeFile.exe
15) Press Edit->new->key in the menu to add a key, and name it "Direct3D" (without the quotes of course)
16) Select the newly created key and Add a string value called "ResetFail". Double click the value, in the dialog that pops up enter "enable"(Case sensitive, as usual without the quotes)
17) In the same way add a string value "OffscreenRendering"="disable" and close the registry editor.
18) Open ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/<eve bottle name>/drive_c/windows/system32
19) Put the wined3d.dll and rsaenh.dll from dl.codeweavers.com, key "evestuff" into this directory.
20) EVE online should be playable now
When I have followed these instructions, EVE still refused to run - login terminated right after "Authenticating" message. I have solved the problem by copying my entire Cache folder from my Windows partition over to the EVE bottle. The first time you log on, game window will be unusably small (it was for me). Quit CrossOver, then start EVE again. It will work normally this time.
Caveats: - no sound. I even suggest disabling it in the game - it seems to speed up the frame rate somewhat - frame rate is lower than in native Windows. Noticeably lower -character portraits are sometimes garbled
Yet, EVE is perfectly playable. Think different! Rev. A 2.16 GHz MacBook Pro here.

I'm getting about 25 FPS in space in a typical high sec system (like Luminaire). More than good enough for hauling, mining, or mission running. I am still kind of wary of going to 0.0 to rat or PvP... Might lose a ship with this kind of performance... But it is still soooo cool! Even with no sound!

Edited by: Jarjar on 30/11/2006 19:50:25 Nice, VERY nice! Well, I can't say it's perfect, but as stated above, good enough for basic stuff. I wouldn't go into a PvP fight, though, but travel / shopping () should be easy!
My framerate is quite crappy TBH (15-25 in space, 40 docked); on a 15.4" MBP (X1600 128MB) but hey, it seems to work. Some graphical glitches now and then, but again, better than rebooting to change skills etc.
Thanks! |

so far everything worked perfectly as described, but as well as the original post was taken from the crossover-forum, these two files
19) Put the wined3d.dll and rsaenh.dll from dl.codeweavers.com, key "evestuff" into this directory.
dont seem to exist either, or at least the key is not valid any more.
as i only have a mac here and really want to play it I beg someone else, who has these files, to send them to me. thank you very very much in advance.

problem solved for me.
the new crossover release does not require these two files, but it does require the 3d3x.dll (or similar) from a windows system32 system, has to be copied. plus the machosomething folder from the eve/cache file has to be transferred, to. after that things worked perfectly.
there is a bug though: in the german language version creating a character can't be finished. switching to english solved the problem. but I dont know how much this has to do with mac and crossover.

Even with the dl file you need in place, I can't get Eve to get past the "Authenticating" message :(
Anyone have a suggestion?

Look at the posting above. I copied all SYSTEM32\D3DX*.dll files and the cache folder of a WinXP box to my crossover bottle and now it's running. Seems that u did not copy the cache folder.
That's really awesome, hope that one is getting better. ;-)

Copy the /cache/Machonet folder into your bottle, that will fix it.

I have managed to get the game working but i have one big problem. My X11 screen size is 640*480 and my gameresolution is bigger atm so i only see the upper left corner of my game. the game seems to run great as far as i can see but the X11 window does not resize with the game resolution. the logi screen resizes normally and is considerably bigger than 640*480. Why does not the character selection and gamewindow resize too as does the login screen?

Edited by: Druadan on 31/01/2007 01:34:26 Okay I got it running but the login screen won't accept any keyboard input so I can't type my password in....
EDIT: it accepts keyboard input, actually, as i type my username and tab across to the password box. But I can't type anything in the password box. __________________________________________________

Okay fixed that problem by copying Arial.tff from my windows fonts to my bottle's fonts.
New problem. The window is incredibly small, like 200x100 pixels, and the EVE window inside is also that small.

I finally have it working too.
Had to copy all d3d*.* files from my PC to the system32 folder in the bottle, then the cache folder and the arial.ttf from windows/fonts into the bottle and BLAM, working fine.
No sound of course and avatars are messed up but I reckon its a cache write permissions thing that may be resolved by a bit of tweaking, will report back on that

Anybody got this problem resolved?
Have i/we done something wrong in the Crossover setup or is the game bound to the 640x480 resolution as set up in the winecfg-setup screen.
Everything works fine even after the 1.3 patch but After the login screen the X-windows returns to the 640x480 resolution and does not resize to the right resolution of the game. i still only see the upper left corned of the game.
Can anyone please help us.
thx

also to dMbN3wB are you sure that you selected "emulate virtual desktop" and set it to the correct size.

I have the same problem. The login screen resizes properly, but once you get to the character select screen you just get part of the screen (upper left corner) and the game itself only has the upper left as well.
Anyone know of something to try to fix this?

I have had some luck running it in the 6.0.0 CrossOver demo.
The evestuff compilation is no longer available from Codeweavers, but I brought across the "d3*.dll"s, the fonts, and made the changes to the registry and winecfg as outlined ( even though the winecfg changes wouldn't do anything without those dll's? odd ). I did not bring a cache along from another installation.
I had to restart it a few times, as advertised, and after the splash screen goes, I get random junk on the screen, but it does then boot and work properly. Compatibility symptoms seem similar to those of other people - no sound, portraits are distorted, framerates are pretty low.
All in all, I am impressed, but not as impressed as if CCP would release a native / ciderised port. Until then, it seems Codeweavers Crossover would make a reasonable alternative if you didn't own a copy of Windows XP SP2 to run on bootcamp.

I can confirm this works as well. This is great. Performance is about 5-10% less than via bootcamp, but uses much less hard drive space and runs inside OS X. [pic] |

For my part, I have solved this problem. Make sure that your graphic settings inside the EVE client have your display set to Fullscreen and the "upper left quadrant" thing went away for me.
I'm on a Mni with 2gb RAM and it runs decently at 1024x768, but not as good as in Bootcamp (or my "real" gaming machine, a XP3800+ w/NV6800 and 3 7200rpm drives). I get 22-23fps in-station and kinda sucks if there's lots of stuff around, but that's to be expected with a GMA945 chipset XD. No replacement for a real machine, that's for sure.
Here's hoping for a real OS X client, though.

5-10% What computer is that on? Also, using what version of Crossover?
I had more like a 60% drop, if not more, when I tried (in November, as you can see above). That on a Macbook Pro, C2D 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, X1600 128MB.
Looks like I'm gonna have to give this another go!

I can confirm that the latest build of Eve works in Crossover 6.0.0. I' currently getting around 30fps with the station environment loaded. I haven't undocked yet, but then again I'm director of production for my corp, so I only get to undock to haul anyway :]
For those of you having trouble entering passwords, you need to put the arial .ttf files into your windws\fonts folder, most likely in your home/Library/Application Support/crossover/bottles/winxp/c_drive/windows/fonts folder.
You can snag it here:
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~gordeon/arial.zip
Also, if you're logging in, authenticating, then getting nothing, your machonet instalation is borked. Open a termainl window, CD to the folder your Eve install is in (mine is in ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/win2000/drive_c /Program Files/CCP/EVE) and ceate and type this:
curl -O http://elfe.mine.nu/eve/linux/MachoNet.bash
when it's done downloading, just type this:
sh MachoNet.bash
This will update your machonet stuff, and you will be able to authenticate again.
I just wish I could run in a higher resolution... But it's fine for everything but PVP, really. And that's what Boot Camp is for, for now. The CrossOver devs have stated that they know what the speed issue is with the graphics, and that they're implementing a new way of handling them that will make a huge difference.

Crossover has been installed, the steps have been followed up the point that i need to go into my 'library' and find the bottles. I get to where they should be and there is nothing. although I have eve in its own winxp bottle and am able to start the app and get to the splash screen, and once get a bad audio message.
Have I done something wrong or do I need to select something somewhere to enable me to see the bottles so i can add the font file and whatever else needs to go in there.
If anyone is willing or wants feel free to convo me ingame...
