Thanks to the hard work over at both WineHQ and CodeWeavers, EVE now runs directly on Mac OS X through CrossOver. CrossOver for Mac is currently in beta right now, so you can try it out for free. Preorders are $40.
The current beta requires a few modifications to work (see Stefan D÷singer's November 15th post here for step-by-step instructions. They look more complicated than they really are, and Stefan says that the next beta will work out of the box.
Performance is remarkably good. There are a few quirks described in the forum thread, but nothing so far that's convinced me that I need to keep my Bootcamp partition. Give it a shot, and don't hesitate to let the CrossOver team know how fabulous they are. _UH_

Very good news for all of us Mac users! I have tried this approach, and it works well (with a few caveats).
Here are the original instructions from CrossOver forum:
1) Install EVE online into a new winxp bottle (win2000 can be problematic). It is highly recommended to use a seperate bottle due to the virtual desktop setting we set later on. Use the unsupported software installer for the main game, and any patches you want to apply.
2) Click Programs->Run command, and select the new eve bottle. Enter "winecfg" into the textbox and press run.
3) Press "Add Application"
4) Enter "eve.exe"(without the quotes) and press "open".
5) Make sure that eve.exe is selected in the list, and go to the libraries tab
6) enter "rsaenh" and press Add.
7) enter "wined3d" and press Add. Ignore the warning that pops up, and say yes.
8) Go back to the Applications tab
9) Add "ExeFile.exe" like in step 3 and 4, make sure it is selected. Then go back to the libraries tab and add "rsaenh" and "wined3d".
10) Go back to applications, and select "Default Settings" from the list.
11) Go to the graphics tab
12) Activate "Enable a virtual desktop", with the size 640x480
13) Close winecfg by pressing ok
14) You should see the "run command" dialog again. There seems to be a bug(can't enter a new command), so you have to close it and open it again. (see step 2). Select the eve bottle, and run the command "regedit".
15) Regedit should come up in a small desktop window. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/AppDefaults/ExeFile.exe
15) Press Edit->new->key in the menu to add a key, and name it "Direct3D" (without the quotes of course)
16) Select the newly created key and Add a string value called "ResetFail". Double click the value, in the dialog that pops up enter "enable"(Case sensitive, as usual without the quotes)
17) In the same way add a string value "OffscreenRendering"="disable" and close the registry editor.
18) Open ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/<eve bottle name>/drive_c/windows/system32
19) Put the wined3d.dll and rsaenh.dll from dl.codeweavers.com, key "evestuff" into this directory.
20) EVE online should be playable now
When I have followed these instructions, EVE still refused to run - login terminated right after "Authenticating" message. I have solved the problem by copying my entire Cache folder from my Windows partition over to the EVE bottle. The first time you log on, game window will be unusably small (it was for me). Quit CrossOver, then start EVE again. It will work normally this time.
Caveats: - no sound. I even suggest disabling it in the game - it seems to speed up the frame rate somewhat - frame rate is lower than in native Windows. Noticeably lower -character portraits are sometimes garbled
Yet, EVE is perfectly playable. Think different! Rev. A 2.16 GHz MacBook Pro here.

I'm getting about 25 FPS in space in a typical high sec system (like Luminaire). More than good enough for hauling, mining, or mission running. I am still kind of wary of going to 0.0 to rat or PvP... Might lose a ship with this kind of performance... But it is still soooo cool! Even with no sound!

Edited by: Jarjar on 30/11/2006 19:50:25 Nice, VERY nice! Well, I can't say it's perfect, but as stated above, good enough for basic stuff. I wouldn't go into a PvP fight, though, but travel / shopping () should be easy!
My framerate is quite crappy TBH (15-25 in space, 40 docked); on a 15.4" MBP (X1600 128MB) but hey, it seems to work. Some graphical glitches now and then, but again, better than rebooting to change skills etc.

so far everything worked perfectly as described, but as well as the original post was taken from the crossover-forum, these two files
19) Put the wined3d.dll and rsaenh.dll from dl.codeweavers.com, key "evestuff" into this directory.
dont seem to exist either, or at least the key is not valid any more.
as i only have a mac here and really want to play it I beg someone else, who has these files, to send them to me. thank you very very much in advance.

problem solved for me.
the new crossover release does not require these two files, but it does require the 3d3x.dll (or similar) from a windows system32 system, has to be copied. plus the machosomething folder from the eve/cache file has to be transferred, to. after that things worked perfectly.
there is a bug though: in the german language version creating a character can't be finished. switching to english solved the problem. but I dont know how much this has to do with mac and crossover.

Look at the posting above. I copied all SYSTEM32\D3DX*.dll files and the cache folder of a WinXP box to my crossover bottle and now it's running. Seems that u did not copy the cache folder.
That's really awesome, hope that one is getting better. ;-)

Copy the /cache/Machonet folder into your bottle, that will fix it.

I have managed to get the game working but i have one big problem. My X11 screen size is 640*480 and my gameresolution is bigger atm so i only see the upper left corner of my game. the game seems to run great as far as i can see but the X11 window does not resize with the game resolution. the logi screen resizes normally and is considerably bigger than 640*480. Why does not the character selection and gamewindow resize too as does the login screen?

EDIT: it accepts keyboard input, actually, as i type my username and tab across to the password box. But I can't type anything in the password box. __________________________________________________

Okay fixed that problem by copying Arial.tff from my windows fonts to my bottle's fonts.
New problem. The window is incredibly small, like 200x100 pixels, and the EVE window inside is also that small.

I finally have it working too.
Had to copy all d3d*.* files from my PC to the system32 folder in the bottle, then the cache folder and the arial.ttf from windows/fonts into the bottle and BLAM, working fine.
No sound of course and avatars are messed up but I reckon its a cache write permissions thing that may be resolved by a bit of tweaking, will report back on that

Anybody got this problem resolved?
Have i/we done something wrong in the Crossover setup or is the game bound to the 640x480 resolution as set up in the winecfg-setup screen.
Everything works fine even after the 1.3 patch but After the login screen the X-windows returns to the 640x480 resolution and does not resize to the right resolution of the game. i still only see the upper left corned of the game.
Can anyone please help us.

also to dMbN3wB are you sure that you selected "emulate virtual desktop" and set it to the correct size.

I have the same problem. The login screen resizes properly, but once you get to the character select screen you just get part of the screen (upper left corner) and the game itself only has the upper left as well.
Anyone know of something to try to fix this?

I have had some luck running it in the 6.0.0 CrossOver demo.
The evestuff compilation is no longer available from Codeweavers, but I brought across the "d3*.dll"s, the fonts, and made the changes to the registry and winecfg as outlined ( even though the winecfg changes wouldn't do anything without those dll's? odd ). I did not bring a cache along from another installation.
I had to restart it a few times, as advertised, and after the splash screen goes, I get random junk on the screen, but it does then boot and work properly. Compatibility symptoms seem similar to those of other people - no sound, portraits are distorted, framerates are pretty low.
All in all, I am impressed, but not as impressed as if CCP would release a native / ciderised port. Until then, it seems Codeweavers Crossover would make a reasonable alternative if you didn't own a copy of Windows XP SP2 to run on bootcamp.

For my part, I have solved this problem. Make sure that your graphic settings inside the EVE client have your display set to Fullscreen and the "upper left quadrant" thing went away for me.
I'm on a Mni with 2gb RAM and it runs decently at 1024x768, but not as good as in Bootcamp (or my "real" gaming machine, a XP3800+ w/NV6800 and 3 7200rpm drives). I get 22-23fps in-station and kinda sucks if there's lots of stuff around, but that's to be expected with a GMA945 chipset XD. No replacement for a real machine, that's for sure.
Here's hoping for a real OS X client, though.

5-10% What computer is that on? Also, using what version of Crossover?
I had more like a 60% drop, if not more, when I tried (in November, as you can see above). That on a Macbook Pro, C2D 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, X1600 128MB.
Looks like I'm gonna have to give this another go!

I can confirm that the latest build of Eve works in Crossover 6.0.0. I' currently getting around 30fps with the station environment loaded. I haven't undocked yet, but then again I'm director of production for my corp, so I only get to undock to haul anyway :]
For those of you having trouble entering passwords, you need to put the arial .ttf files into your windws\fonts folder, most likely in your home/Library/Application Support/crossover/bottles/winxp/c_drive/windows/fonts folder.
You can snag it here:
http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~gordeon/arial.zip
Also, if you're logging in, authenticating, then getting nothing, your machonet instalation is borked. Open a termainl window, CD to the folder your Eve install is in (mine is in ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/win2000/drive_c /Program Files/CCP/EVE) and ceate and type this:
curl -O http://elfe.mine.nu/eve/linux/MachoNet.bash
when it's done downloading, just type this:
sh MachoNet.bash
This will update your machonet stuff, and you will be able to authenticate again.
I just wish I could run in a higher resolution... But it's fine for everything but PVP, really. And that's what Boot Camp is for, for now. The CrossOver devs have stated that they know what the speed issue is with the graphics, and that they're implementing a new way of handling them that will make a huge difference.

Crossover has been installed, the steps have been followed up the point that i need to go into my 'library' and find the bottles. I get to where they should be and there is nothing. although I have eve in its own winxp bottle and am able to start the app and get to the splash screen, and once get a bad audio message.
Have I done something wrong or do I need to select something somewhere to enable me to see the bottles so i can add the font file and whatever else needs to go in there.
If anyone is willing or wants feel free to convo me ingame...

Guys, this is the best topic I ever read in a forum. Always wished to get EVE running on X, but nothing worked. Even tried the beta of VMWare Fusion after I cought up the video from the devs on youtube.
Already found the way to get DirectX 9 into the EVE-bottle, but I failed on configuring the bottle itself. But with the great hints posted here I made the thing work.

Edited by: Nyana on 15/05/2007 17:15:03 Edited by: Nyana on 15/05/2007 17:13:50 Whoa! Has anyone tried this with Crossover Mac 6.1 yet? I just did, after spending 99% of my computer-time in Windows XP... And it works VERY well compared to previous versions, at least so far.
Pros: - Nice framerate, 60+ in station and not too much lower than in Windows outside Jita 4-4 - NO graphics bugs as far as I could see (all portraits, ships & people looked perfect!) _ Need I say more? OK, I will: No registry editing (winecfg, etc) was required, at all - In response to the con below, changing to fullscreen was as simple as pressing escape and choosing fullscreen mode in the EVE options.
Cons: - The above is only true in fullscreen mode, in windowed mode there was an odd graphics bug where the last 20 pixels or so of everything was missing, and all tabs were invisible. It worked, but wasn't playable. - You still need to copy fonts & DLLs from windows; that part is very easy though. All you need is Arial*.ttf and d3dx*.dll, and put these in /Users/yourname/Application Support/CrossOver/bottles/xxxxx/drive_c/windows/system32 (phu, long path).
Long story short: 1) Create a new bottle, I chose a winxp one. 2) Go to the applicatons tab of the new bottle, click "install", locate EVE_Setup.exe, yada yada. Click next until EVE is installed. 3) Copy Arial*.ttf and D3Dx*.dll from the System32 dir on a Windows box into the above stated folder. 4) Play?
Oh, and I did this on a Macbook Pro, 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, made sometime around October 2006 (I ordered before their release so it should be one of the first batches).
Edit: I think I managed to fool it into working just as well windowed. In addition to the steps above, insert this between step 3 and 4... 3.5) Go to "manage bottles" in Crossover, then the control panel tab, and run winecfg. In there, go to the Graphics tab, and check the "emulate virtual desktop" thingy near the bottom (I can't check atm). Set it to the resolution you want - I chose 1280x800, since that is the size I want EVE to run at (my screen is 1440x900). 4) See step 4 above.
Edit: Oh, I forgot. To run windowed as stated above, EVE still needs to be set to fullscreen. EVE still THINKS it's running in full screen mode, but Crossover is taking care of the rest to make it a window.

Yes they have delivered ! EVE is really running great (except for no sound still) with me, even on my slow MacBook. I have another "fix" for the windowed thing though, just set it to windowed and then back to Fullscreen. That makes my EVE think it is Fullscreen, but it is not and Expose etc. work great. Oh and I didn't have to copy any .dlls. EVE should install without the need for manual copying, as it is a supported application now. But I had the standard fonts installed before for Steam, maybe that's why. Anyway, I won't install Windows ever again ;)

I followed the default installation proceedure for EVE through Crossover, and the performance on my MacBook is too slow to be usable. I noticed however that EVE seems to think I have some sort of 3D accelerator, when clearly I do not. This has resulted in a higher level of object detail than I get when running it in Windows natively, ironically, but at the cost of a good deal of frameskipping. Are there graphics settings you had to tweak with the WINE library?
This is my configuration: MacBook CoreDuo 2.0 ghz / 2 GB RAM / 100 GB HDD / Intel GMA 950m

Probably because you are using the integrated video by Intel instead of a graphics card as in the MacBook Pros.
Try switching to lower pixel depth (16 bits etc) and switch OFF the audio (even though Crossover doesn't support audio) and switch ON the LOD (under graphics) setting.
You'll probably want to play around with the Z Buffer settings and switch to something lower for your MB.

Oh, I am sorry that was a bit misleading. By "running great" I meant that there were no major bugs besides the lack of sound. The framerate is pretty bad, but I think it's very playable, except for some ships/structures that seem to slow it down a great deal. But I just look the other way then. What objects cause this is pretty strange though. First I thought only very big structures like wreckage/stations on some missions, but then I saw a mining barge and the framerate dropped immidiatly as well. Strange. Well, at the moment it runs good enough for me, with the sound off and all effects except for the turrets off (can't remember the keyboard shortcut for that, I'm sorry, maybe someone else knows).

Ya, I tweaked every graphics setting I could find to get it to run better. I know I lack a real graphics card (which actually wasn't an issue until REV bumped the requirements up), but to be able to play it and not go crazy I think I need something more than 5 fps
So, all this has really done is make me want a Mac with better graphics that I absolutely cannot afford to buy right now. Curse you Crossover! Curse you CCP!

IMPORTANT You do not need to manually install any files at all. It's all automatic and intelligent. A previous post on v6.1 was incorrect on this point.
FOR OLD MAC USERS CROSSOVER 6.0X Delete your old bottle, or uninstall Eve. Follow instructions below:
NEW MAC USERS Create a new Win200 bottle. Install the supported application. It's in the list of applications. If you already have an eve setup exe, you can nominate to use it. If you do not have the installer, CrossOver will download it for you. Crossover will also download Arial and DirectX to set up your bottle correctly.
Play.

Until then, try booting in safe mode (hold down Shift at startup until the Apple logo appears). If you have other network services running (file sharing, remote desktop, etc.) stop them. If this doesn't work, try erasing and reinstalling both EVE and Crossover.

Yes, maybe a little more info could help. I haven't heard about this problem yet though. Maybe try playing around with the Graphics settings when in char selection. And try re-installing CrossOver (look for the CrossOver settings folder in your Library as well). Remember to archive all the bottles you might want to keep. Oh and go to the forums: here The devs are usually trying hard to get it working on your machine as well.

Can anyone use antialiasing/multisampling in crossover? I set the advanced device line in the config file, and ive got an ati radeon x1900xl (so its certainly powerful enough), yet theres nothing in the multisampling popup menu except for disabled. Is this a shortcoming of the game with ati cards, or with crossover?

As stated on the previous page, you need to set 'voiceenabled' to '0' in your prefs.ini. All EveVoice subscribers (or even trial users) must do this.

Okay. I was mainly concerned with whether you were trying this on an old Mini or something with a discreet graphics card. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a conflict between crossover and invidia's drivers. I've been really unimpressed with their driver support lately, it seems that all my friends' nvidia cards have given them fits or are just flat out not playing some games.
Based on other threads, though, it seems at least possible that with the next Rev patch we'll get an official CIDER-wrapped client that works without hiccups like yours. Here's hopin'

Umm, normally on a mac you hold down the ctrl key to bring up context menus, but I have no idea if this works as a right click in Crossover as I haven't used a mac with the default Apple mouse in a very long time. Honestly, the best thing I can suggest is to get almost any brand two-button or better mouse.
I had to laugh at the fact that EVE is the first game you've ever played on a mac, too. Not for malicious reasons, mind you, but for the fact that it's really not a Mac game at all. Even if CCP releases a CIDER wrapper for the client, it's still Windoze code.
By the way, welcome to Mac

If it does work than is it bearable?

Already addressed this in the thread. On my MacBook I find EVE playable when I run it natively in Windows XP, but with Crossover it's choppy as all get-out. Certainly nowhere near 25 fps, even inside stations.
I don't know how well it runs under WINE/linux, but you could always install linux as a dual-boot setup and give that a shot. I prefer Xubuntu for it's minimal overhead and ease of configuration, but almost anything will run fine on a MacBook (though I couldn't get Freespire to work for me). If you want to play games, get a laptop with a discreet graphics card. MacBooks are all integrated Intel GMA 950 chipsets, MacBook Pros have ATI X1600 cards with either 128 or 256 MB video RAM.
Speculation on the release of an official Mac client can be found elsewhere in this thread / forum. Suffice it to say that it will make a lot of people happy
Also welcome to Mac!

Like I said, I didn't have any problems installing Eve. I just used CrossOver 6.1's automated installation process. To get the game to run at a playable frame rate, I reduced several graphics options: I reduced the depth/stencil format to 28 bit z-buffer w/ 4 bit stencil, set the resolution to 1152x720, and reduced the color depth to 16 (although I dont know that really helps much).
Now, these settings allow me to play at a decent framerate. It does not help me with some bugs that I have run into so far. I've ran into several times where my ship will become unresponsive after warping (along with objects like planets and ships not loading when this happens). In order for me to get out of this, I have to exit the game. Then, upon reloading Eve, I'll have to change the graphic settings again since it doesn't look CrossOver saves the settings I've changed in-game. I've also noticed laggy mouse speed as well.
I hope this helps
Edit: oops, I should mention that I'm using a plain ol' Macbook

Well, I can "play" just fine, tweaking my setup in station, running courier missions, changing skills, etc. When it comes time to fight and 15-20 ships lag my view to the point that i'm measuring seconds per frame, I consider that a slight hinderance. For now I'm perfectly happy to play on a decent desktop setup if I want to do anything that's not afk-able.
As a side note, has anyone else had the bug where you can't move the cursor all the way to the bottom of the screen? I've had this on two different machines, and it makes opening the chat window once you've closed it impossible.

That is why I suggest changing the resolution to 1152x720. For some reason, I have that same problem when I play at full 1200x800. Changing it to 1152x720 makes minimized windows reachable again (for me atleast). Give it a try!
Also, I am having issues with combat framerate as well. I don't think it is an issue with CrossOver per se. My Macbook doesn't have the game-worthy video card that the Macbook Pro has, so that is probably why ( I could be wrong tho).

No, you're absolutely right. Since there is not an actual graphics card in the MacBook, Crossover tricks EVE into thinking it has one through emulation. This requires a lot of work on the part of the CPU, and can mean higher graphics quality in less demanding situations (station, warp), but also causes problems when it's asked to do not one, or two, but twenty things at once.
Interesting point about the resolution. My desktop uses 1440x900, and it has the same problem. Seems a little awkward...

thats not strictly true. onboard video isnt a separate card, but it is a gpu, so it does take the strain of graphical stuff. more of a problem is the vram, which the macbook uses its normal physical ram for, and that clogs up the buses and generally slows things down. without a gpu the graphical stuff would be emulated in software and be shunted onto the cpu, but software emulation became a thing of the past a long time ago due to all computers now having gpus. the high cpu usage of crossover is down to both the game and the extra function translations that have to be carried out to get it to work in osx. more ram should help to speed things up, or installing the game to an external firewire hard drive.

You're in the right place, Diab. A few suggestions: Erase Crossover and the old EVE installation. Run software update for pete's sake and get up to 10.4.9 (I doubt this has anything to do with your problem, but it's a good idea anyway). Then reinstall Crossover then use it's automated installation process to grab EVE.
I had a similar problem getting a previously downloaded client install to work. Letting Crossover do the work seems to be the most reliable method. _______________________________________________________________

Yepp, did like you said and EVE is running perfect on my MacBook Pro, OSX 10.4.9

Now i got my macbook pro :) Installed the demo for crossover and eve and it worked like a charm. i have only tested in station and there fps was very good no lag at all.
Very easy install, just select eve in supported apps and a way you go.
The only thing i noticed was that all the windows in eve were completely transparent. is it like that or is it a setting i have missed?

That's odd, if it happened by default. Check the window settings and make sure they aren't at max transparency. Also click the make transparent icon in each window and see what happens.
That's, just odd... _____________________________________

New client configs have a lot more transparancy by default now. Prolly added since Revelations was released. Can be easily changed in the ingame ESC menu prefs.

Thanks for the advice and i tried that but my problem is still there. I tried with transparency 0, 255 and somewhere in the middle, but no change.
im starting to guess its the new gfx-card in the mac book pro that gives me this, since noone else has it.
the left menu is even transparent and all the "esc menus" and the startup screen where you login too looks a little strange. /Arnaxh |

Mmmmm EvE Online running on Macs = *Drool*
I just had a look at the Mac Pro at the Apple Store:
x2 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 16GB of 667MHz DDR2 fully buffered ECC RAM (8 x 2GB) x4 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI) Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel) Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel) Two 16x SuperDrives Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme Dual-channel 4Gb Fibre Channel PCI Express card Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse - U.S. English Mac OS X - U.S. English
I do believe you can configure this monster to have x4 PCI Express Graphic Cards.
That would wtf-beyond-overkill-pwn any client lag. I would only be at the mercy of network related issues.
Yes it would be pricely insane but I can help pay for by editing pRon ... mwuahahaha!

You know, if you have that much money to throw at lag, you might consider helping the rest of us get new machines too. After all, if everyone's client machines were uber, the total lag in the game could be reduced _____________________________________

Has anyone else been having CTD problems when jumping into gates with a lot of people around them? I first experienced this in Rens, but tonight it happened when I jumped into a gatecamp and it CTD and I lost my freighter, 100m in cargo and a ton of implants. I petitioned this and submitted a bug report, but I'm scared it will amount to nothing -- a) won't be able to effectively play on the mac, b) will have lost like 95% of my player value in one crash.

never had it ctd on me, even in jita after a visit from the kamikaze squad. keep pushing that petition, cos theres no reason for it to be more unstable on a mac (crossover has caused crashes for me, but of crossover itself rather than of eve).

I have played with crossover and eve for a little while now. very nice i think, in space i get very good fps (i havent tried big battles yet). I got the transparency problem working aswell, after an update from both codeweaver and apple.
But after i installed the latest patch for rev 2.02 i got only semi black faces and my ship is all black except for the "head lights". Anyone else that has this problem? Should i always do a complete reinstall after a patch? I deleted everything in the cache directory, but no change there.

clearing the cache should have solved the portrait problem, so it sounds like you might have some corrupted textures in there. no idea how it could have happened, but a fresh install of the game will probably help. if the problem is still there after that it might be some kinda trouble with how crossover is rendering things. i followed the old (pre cx-6.1) instructions on getting eve running through crossover when i had some trouble and they seemed to solve things. they should be around on google.

Related but unrelated to CrossOver
I have this working on Parallels. It's a little tricky to get it started but it does work, if you:
* Set Parallels to Full Screen mode, using your display's full native resolution * Set Eve to use full screen, same resolution
The login window is tricky, mouse pointer doesn't go where you need it to. After trial and error you'll get it. But once you get your username in, the cursor goes to the password field by default, and you type that in and enter and that's all you have to do in subsequent sessions to your first one.
Performance is acceptable. Minor artifacts include white blocks around progress bars (which includes the fitting screen), and lens flares flicker. Mouse movement lags a bit and that is a little frustrating since this game demands a lot of mousing (excessively mouse-happy in my opinion)
My VM is set to 512MB RAM, 16MB video RAM. Parallels 3.0, latest build. MacBook Pro Core2 Duo, 2GB RAM. It is in fact running in a different display as I write this.
This does not work under VMWare Fusion (at least I could not get it to work).
Cannot wait for the native client. Running windows on a perfectly good mac to play any game is masochistic.

the cache folder recently changed location with revelations 2, so its now in the documents and settings folder for your account in doze. im not sure how this works with crossover, but im assuming that folder exists in ~/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/win2000/drive_c/ there is apparently a line you can add to the prefs file to make it use the old location, but i cant remember what it is. should be in the sticky in this forum id imagine. i reckon you should try to run even in windowed mode in crossover. you should still be able to set it to close to your screen res and it has more chance of working than tryin to do things in fullscreen.

eve works well for me in parallels (cept for the progress bars) running it in a vm window. that is, have parallels run in a window and set eve to run fullscreen to that windows size. this means you can get on with other mac stuff in the background as you play, which is pretty handy. as for the mouse lag, ive not had any of that (tho i am on sturdier hardware). make sure you click on install parallels tools in the actions menu, even if you already installed them once, cos the mouse driver in there should smooth things out a lot.

OK, I may not be running an 8-core Mac Pro, but it's no slouch:
Model Name:MacBook Pro 15" Model Identifier:MacBookPro2,2 Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed:2.33 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache (per processor):4 MB Memory:2 GB Bus Speed:667 MHz Boot ROM Version:MBP22.00A5.B01 SMC Version:1.12f5
:) I would prefer an NVidia GPU, particularly since now AMD = ATI. So I have an Intel system with graphics by AMD. Hellooooo.
I run a two-display setup. I use the full 15" screen in fullscreen mode for the game, and my 17" screen for Mail, etc.
The mouse lag is the time it takes the pointer to catch up to where you made movements to. I'd say it's about a half second or less... and this is just enough to make it painful, since Eve's interface has thin borders and tiny scrollbars, etc.
Now that the Eve API stuff is going, I am _REALLY_ hoping someone makes mods to cut out the mousing entirely with some keyboarding, because context switching between the mouse gets on my nerves. I am a heavy QS user and if I never had to use the mouse for anything, that would suit me from my shoes to my scalp. I might make those mods myself if I can find the time.
The game is playable... however, I wouldn't try to do any pvp in Eve under Parallels, it's just not responsive enough. So I'm training, doing simple quests, and social stuff. It's nice to just be playing Eve again but it's not where I want it.
I'd really like to see CCP switch to OpenGL and make a true Mac client, not a Cider release... but I'm not goign to complain about a Cider release at all. It will be so much better than what I'm currently doing. DirectX is only becoming more like OpenGL over time, and why continue with that when you could use an open standard (no longer subject to what Microsoft alone decides to do), and thus open your product up to a multi-platform strategy? The only advantage I see is that in DirectX you don't have to write some extra code to take advantage of vendor-specific hardware features. On the other hand, if DirectX doesn't support those hardware features you want to use, you're screwed anyway.
Blizzard's decision to support Mac natively has paid for itself many times over. I saw a guy in a Starbucks the other day playing WoW on his white Macbook. (which is now possible since Apple finally made OpenGL multithreaded) ... the same might or might not be true for Eve, but the Mac user base would probably take to it in good numbers, I'm guessing. I think it'd be cool to see people playing Eve instead of WoW on cheap $1000 Apple notebooks.
At what volume does CCP need Mac subscribers to justify a real port? I'm curious about that. 500? 500 * $20 = $10000/mo gross, which should be enough to at least hire a dedicated Mac developer. I would like CCP to comment on that cost structure in their development.
I'd hazard a guess the Cider route was pretty cheap, and I wonder if they've outsourced QA of the Cider client to Transgaming as well. That way the Mac client is really _nothing_ they have to do themselves, they still focus on making the Windows/DirectX client, have a rev-share deal with Transgaming on every subscription (Transgaming gets a %), and Transgaming takes care of the rest. I'm making the assumption that Transgaming wants to do the QA here because it's too expensive otherwise at low volume.

So after trying this all possible ways, here's my conclusions:
* Latest CrossOver w/audio patch: works 100% so far, good framerates, responsive, audio is correct, looks great * Parallels 3.0 - works, minor artifacts, but slow... too slow for combat, aggravating mouse performance * VMWare Fusion - doesn't work at all, crashes Windows
This is on a MacBook Pro Core2 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM. YMMV on another machine!
I would recommend CrossOver over any other solution right now if you are looking specifically to get EVE to run well. If you need Windows for other things, you should probably pick Parallels. The install process on CrossOver was painless. Runtime was snappy. No complaints at all.

id have to say that parallels is the better tool for mac pro users then, cos crossover does have some really painful freezing up the entire computer problems and the mouse lag isnt there on this hardware (4core mac pro, so i assume the 8core ones work even better). bit of a pain that you need a copy of doze to use parallels, but its still better than that random freezing on this hardware. so, mac pro - use parallels, any other mac - use crossover then :)

I haven't had any freezing issues with CrossOver, whatsoever. It works very well.
I did report earlier that the audio seems perfect -- it's not, it's a little glitchy but I only noticed it when I put on headphones. Other than that CrossOver is working splendid. The only cons I can see with CrossOver right now:
1- I can't switch out of the game to do other things on the Mac (or don't know how to...yet) 2- Adding to the above, on a multi-display system, CrossOver takes up one display and blacks out the other.
That said, Parallels doesn't leave much left over when Eve is running for the rest of the system... even adding data to cells in a spreadsheet is painful. No doubt this is better on a 2/4 CPU system, but come on, how many people really have those? Not too many.
CrossOver is the best thing (as of this writing) for anyone wanting to run Eve on most Mac/Intel products. Parallels will get better but it's not there yet where it's worth the hassle.

yea, they know. apparently its some obscure bug somewhere in the annals of osx and apple said they thought 10.4.10 had fixed it but it still happens for me at random. sometimes when installing something, sometimes when opening crossover, sometimes when opening an app, and sometimes just in the middle of everything.
Originally by: Braelia I haven't had any freezing issues with CrossOver, whatsoever. It works very well.
yes crossover works fine on macs that arent mac pros. the freezing is an issue specific to the mac pro so imacs, macbooks, and macbook pros (and mac minis) arent affected by it.

Yay! This works great on my macbook pro, the sound patch is good but a bit glitchy. I'd choose this over installing bootcamp though!
Does anyone know how to minimize/tab out of the game though to check things online etc? It wont let me tab out and if i go into windowed mode, all the buttons muck up and its not possible to get back into full screen?

Yeah, it runs pretty well on my MBP too, only thing i've noticed so far is the inability to change the colors in the starmap.
I'd love to get it running in windowed though, i have a ****load of screen real estate wasted otherwise. Any Ideas? Like an emulated window in crossover office, where eve isn't aware it's not actually fullscreen?

check if there is an virtual desktop option in crossover and activate that, then run eve as fullscreen inside the virtual desktop window

you can do this by setting a desktop size and telling it to emulate the desktop. its in the bottle config utility, which you can find in the utilities tab when you inspect a bottle. i think.. its a while since i used it now.

Just got my 15" MacBook Pro (2,2 Ghz, 2 Gig RAM, GF 8600M), installed Crossover, installed a fresh D/led EVE Client and runs like a Charm. There just some little problems, like my char pic moved a bit out of place in chat windows, and the windowmanager cant handle that particular window, but else everything runs just smooth.

Kasylia you do not need those files, download the latest version of Crossover, add a new win2000 Bottle and then select EVE from the Supported Software list.
On another note, I have this working now, but I cannot right click, hows this done?

I have CrossOver and EVE working almost flawlessly together now, but there are still some issues that are making life difficult for me.
The main thing is a seemingly minor graphical glich that is affecting how certain things are displayed. Mostly it's lines on certain menus that aren't working, but the main problem is that when I select a target the shield/armor/structure indicators aren't there. The result being that any time I get in a fight I have no way of telling how bad my target is hurt.
Anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

I have exactly the same glitches with lines and menus, I think you can fix this by changing the transparency settings, I am going to try this now.

Hmmm, i have not got the overview working.
EVE is very hard to play as you cannot see when anything is locked easily, all the colours for gang, war, alliance tags are all broken you there is just a white - or * or + to see, no colour at all!

I tried changing the transparency settings as well with no effect. I also asked on the CrossOver forums if they knew about this bug and the guy basically told me that he'd answer my question when I payed for the software. Which I'd be happy to do if I knew that problem was fixed...

I used the installer script testing crossover a month ago or so, and although it installed everything fine, I too got the black screen until ensuring that the msttcorefont package was installed as well as moving arial.ttf and tahoma.ttf into the /windows/fonts directory.
This may have been fixed since then, but it is something to try.

Hi. I have a Mac Pro with 2GB RAM and a GF7300. I installed EVE using the script, and it worked, but wanted me to patch the game (I used a previous installer I had on my Bootcamp hard disk). I did that nad now the game won't get past the splash screen. I had the same issue when I tried to use Cedega in Linux so I think it's something WINE is missing that the new version of EVE needs. I have a full install of EVE and XP SP@ to hand on my bootcamp drive if I need any extra files. So far I have also copied 'tahoma.ttf' to the fonts folder of the Win2000 bottle.
All help greatly appreciated!

I had a similar problem, where the patch wouldn't complete because it complained about a corrupt file during patching. Copying the Eve folder from a working (patched) install into the Crossover bottle fixed it. Ugly, and brute-force, but it works :)

I wasn't able to find this anywhere, but does anyone know what could be going wrong if everything works flawlessly until I undock? As soon as I undock it freezes. The music still plays, but that's it.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.10 on a MacBook Pro

Got a similar problem as well since updating to 6.2.0, i can undock, but freezes short after, when nearing a station, seem to be related with the station models. Happens sometimes that it even locks up the whole system.

How do you clear the cache in 6.2? I couldn't find a Documents and Settings folder in "drive_c" or a cache folder in "EVE".

There is a button in the Eve ESC menu. It was added when Revelations came out I think.

otherwise just search in Spotlight for cache and let you show all folders, you can then identify them rather easy with their directory

Since version 6.2, getting the Tranquility client to install is a no brainer. However I'm having some trouble with the Sisi client. After installing the client in a new bottle and patching it to the latest Sisi version, all I get is a black screen the same size as the Login screen. The music plays though.
Has anyone gotten the Sisi client to work in Crossover?

I don't think anyone has it working beyond the splash screen. The last few patches have not worked for anyone I've spoken to, including windoze users.

I did get this running via crossover - however - there is no sound. I need sound. sometimes I mine and multitask - need to hear when I'm being hit by rats ;) I also had to use a hack that was posted by a crossover dude - because I have an nvidia card that has driver issues. (running a mac pro)
I just bought the new version 1 actual release of VMWare Fusion. It touts being able to support select 3D games. I have not gotten eve to work yet. It looks like it wants to load, I get the first splash screen - then I looks like the next window that wants to pop up goes into the desktop launch icon (weird animation of window opening - but nothing showing)
I hope VMware can get this working - 'cause I'm not interested in the other stuff they have planned. I had thought that there was gonna be a native mac client - and that is just NOT the case :(
mac sales are on the rise - and there is a reason for it. a bunch of games just got ported too (e.g. Battlefield 2142) - perfect time to reconsider IMHO ;)

A little update:
Right Now (yes 1.5 hours to release of leopard) I am sitting outside an empty station running at roughly 24 FPS. On my CoreDuo Black Macbook with Crossover and Leopard (preorder. I run eve with the "Restore from full screen" in crossover and as an added bonus, when you use that option, you can play eve in one space and do the rest of your stuff in other spaces. Only issue so far was when I first undocked I was stuck at 4 fps but all that changed when I resized resolution to 1024x720. Then fps went up. I then got curious and resized it again to 1280x779 and low and behold it was fixed (some sort of reset or something?) Anyway, everything is goin great. Off to mishun!

Running eve in a fresh installed bottle on the latest beta of 6.2.0 in leopard here. Setup crossover to use space 3. the game starts fullscreened, but the mouse wont go below an imaginary line at 1/3rd up the screen. what i have to do is start the game, restore from full screen, change the game setting to windowed mode, then change it back to fullscreen. what this does is give me a window properly positioned on the desktop at the right res, at about 40-60fps. this is absolutely ideal, as it doesnt stop me playing movies on the second monitor, the menu bar and command tab are all accessible and spaces works and interacts as it should. crossover eve is basically a borderless, unmovable window.
any ideas how to get this behaviour without the first minute of silly buggers?
i tried using the config dialog to setup a desktop window whatsit. works fine, and infact stops the login window getting thrown half off the screen when using dual monitors, but as soon as you login, eve will move so the left bottom corner is in the middle of the screen.
its nothing critical, but maybe someone has some ideas on whats causing it.
