So im hwre in my physics 111 university physics with calculus and we are learning that an object with zero net force will have constant velocity.
Why dont my spaceship keep going at like 2km a sec when i turn off my microwarp drive?

Because this game is based off submarine physics where you are surrouded by a fluid.

It's well known that we are playing a submarine game.
Also, it's easier physics to manage than vacuum physics from a gameplay perspective. A lot more enjoyable for us a players.

In EVE, space has some sort of substance and it uses a fluid dynamics model.

Because EVE spaceships do not use Netwonian engines. Otherwise, we would also need to carry fuel (reaction mass) to move at sub-light speeds.
Do you really want to see gas/petrol stations floating at every stargate and space station?

Then why dont we sink?
And my professor is now talking about fluid resistance and terminal speed and then low speed fluid friction.
I think that "submarine phyaics" is still wrong.
Its not underwater physics either according to my professor |

Its not underwater physics either according to my professor Uhm, people tend to learn and retain information better if they're not distracted, i.e. posting on web forums during class is probably not the best way to spend your academic time and money.

eve is in a time and even by ccp mechanics of nuclear and fusion reactors.....they did have 23k years since the closing of the eve game along with rediscovered tech compared to our few hundred years here on earth with tech.

Because there's no gravity? Kinda makes sense.
But the stations and planets and suns have gravity so we should constantly "sink/slide" towards that stuff when we shut off our engines |

also please remember.....its a GAME. do you really want true to physics games? minmatar may be better off as they could use there solar panels for power and just use gravity wells/planet gravity to slingshot around, and remember just because you stop warping you have told the ship to stop, so the ships computer works out the retro thrusters to keep you in position :) |

It depends how you look at it:
Gameplay: CCP tried to create a game where the people actually see each other and can fight in a limited area of space and not fly by or collide at 0.5x the speed of light.
Physics: It's completely nuts
Lore: Something something warpdrive crates friction against the fabric of space something
the Code ALWAYS wins

Because gameplay.
If we were to have "real" (or at least, more real then now) physics, combat gameplay would be ridiculuos and not fun. Have you ever played Kerbal Space program? If not, then do it. And then come back and decide if you really want to have "physics"in the game.
KSp is fun, no question. But it wouldnt make sense for EVE. Some things simply have to be simplyfied to be fun. |

... sigh...
There are a few ways to explain this from in game percpective.
MWD and AB produce a type of drag so when you deactivate your ship still has traces of this drag force on it that slows it down.
Or
your ship has minit reverse thrusters that kick in when you shut off the mwd. But i prefer to go with the WMD produces drag.
Stations and things would remain in orbit with micro thrusters. When would enable it to keep orbit as said orbit decays.
Or you look at it like this...
Its a bloody game. who the hells cares?

Another fact: The game doesn't represent it, but every ship has a swim bladder, like a fish. It gives the ship neutral buoyancy, so they won't float up or sink down in the fluid. There was once a thread in Features & Ideas asking for swim bladder damage effects to be added to the game. Some people even wanted bladder buoyancy control added, for an extra dimension of ship-handling in PVP. But unfortunately, the ideas didn't go anywhere.

The best answer I've heard:
Warp drives create drag. They anchor you in space. Warp drives are always on and cannot be turned off without exploding. Therefore when you're traveling at sublight speed you're always fighting against the force of warp drag.

Or a simpler explanation:
CONCORD mandates that all ships operate with Inertial Dampening. Meaning that unless a force is being applied by the engines, the ship will slow down, and ships are restricted to a maximum velocity.
This makes sure that CONCORD can always catch every ship. |
