Pretty new to this. So bare with me.
I've recently mined enough Veldspar to purchase a Venture. I decided to go out and mine some Viscous pyroxeres. I was then approached by a cicadian seeker x 4 and an apollo tyrannos. I was wondering when or how do I escape when I see things like this come along? I managed to destroy two small ships before mining. But I got scared and backed out as soon as I saw several ships.
Appreciate some help and pointers.

as a non combatant your best tanking strategy is to RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN whenever something scary shows up, preferably before it actually lands, that said drifters should ignore you for the most part unless you pic a fight with them , in which case they will drop you immediately (seriously those drifter battle ships have one-shotted capital ships).
you can kill them ,thers a knack to it but i dont actually know what it is

You run from the drifters. That's it. They want the belt, it's their belt. |

Thanks for the heads up. There is so much to learn!
Finally made my first 1m ISK without any problems. I just need to figure out what skills to train and how to buy better tools for the venture now!

By all reports and personal experience; drifter and circadian seekers are non aggressive unless the following conditions are met:
1) You picked a fight with them, at which point they will fight back with extreme prejudice including podding you(I've heard drifters pod, I don't believe the circadians do though)
2) You've killed enough drifter battleships that the consider your mere presence on the same grid as them a persistent stink eye and will come attempt to bend you over and push it in hard.
The most aggressive action I've had a drifter do to me in a belt was give my mack a little nudge and sent it fly at 700+ m/s. CCPs new troll AI....bumping npcs |

Keep D-Scan open too (alt+D) and hit 'scan' a few times a minute. If you see probes close to you on the scanner results, warp out immediately. Probes showing on the scanner means someone is actively trying to hunt someone down. You can nearly always spot their probes before the actual ship that's coming to murder your face.

Tickle Industries can teach you how to easily max your ore/hr by letting others do the work for you.

The Venture can actually sport a decent shield tank, and carry the DPS to dispatch minor rats via drones. If I was home at my PC, I would share said fit.
Until then, off of memory:
Highs - Mining Lasers x2, Salvager X1 (The second highslot can be adapted to some other utility modual. Salvager lets you get the most out of rats you kill.)
Mids - Adaptive Invul x1, Medium Shield Extender x1, 1mn afterburner
Lows - Damage Conrol, Mining Laser Upgrade, Nanofiber Internal Structure, etc etc (Choices)
Rigs - 3x Core Defense Field Extenders.
Drones - 3x Hobgoblin I
I believe this setup sports around 2,000 to 2300 EHP. More than enough to tank basic NPCs or last long enough to warp out.
If you mail me in-game, I can provide you with the actual fit link when I get off work. I believe the entire fit is 2-3m isk (Could be wrong.) |

imo that is a little paranoid for mining, as mining sites tend to be warpable objects. Though in a WH it is a good indication you have company so normal guidelines on paranoia may not apply.

Just as mining advice, 1: Don't make it your long term career! 2: If you do mine, Massive Scordite usually has the most value in High Sec.

Tip for making money from mining use the calculator ..
Sometimes it's best to sell your unrefined ore Sometimes it's best to sell your refined minerals
Mining anomalies will give you some variety in harvestable things Have no idea if npc's spawn in them though Just open up your scanner interface, like combat anomalies they are pre-identified at 100% and can be warped to directly
For regular belts your main threat will be other players Ordinary npc's can be tanked by the mining frigate and destroyed by drones
In general terms, the moment you click undock, you have engaged in risk. Being a member of a fleet, corp or alliance reduces the 'individual risk' that you undertake
alone .. you have a 100% chance of becoming a target in a fleet of 50 .. you have a 2% chance of becoming a target |

This is a gross oversimplification of the numbers to the point of in effect being untrue. In null sec / low sec / wormhole space being in a corp will certainly add safety. In high sec it could go either way depending on the situation making you more or less of a target.
As far as fleet mechanics what you say is only true if you assume that fleet size has nothing to do with your chances of the fleet it's self becoming a target. A fleet of 50 mining barges will certainly attract attention and in many cases get people coming from several systems away to get a piece of the action. A fleet of 50 T1 destroyers on the other hand could have people running from you or running to you depending on what they have at their disposal.
The short version is that 50 mining ships of characters in the same corp mining in the same place will almost certainly bring a war dec or two which will lead to future risk. |

Ralph King-Griffin wrote:edit: for getting the **** out the general practice is, pic a station , click align, start mining, click warp to whatever you were aligned to when something comes to murder your face off. also, learn to get your pod out
You need to add "set your speed to 75% of maximum" and "start on the far side of the rock" in there somewhere. Doesn't do you much good if align takes you away from the rock before cycle completes. |

Best policy is not to attack the Circadian Seekers or the Drifter battleships and in the case of the Drifters and their structures to keep a wide berth. Once you attack them you receive negative standings which cannot be modified to the best of my knowledge. Once you have negative standings with them you be KOS (Kill on sight.) with them forevermore

Probably, but IMO paranoid is better than losing a ship. I haven't mined in high sec in a long time though |
