Could someone break down the power make-up of the Alliances and Coalitions in Null space for me? Looking for who are the players, what influence they have and exert, what they stand for and what there goals are to name a few. figured if I plan to join one of them sometime I want to know what they represent. I am trying to create a image in my head of who has relationships with who, how those connections reflect on the Universe in general and what drives the top alliances and coalitions. |

This is a good question you are asking, but it is complicated and anything that can be summed up for you here would be an oversimplification of the relationship map. As the previous poster has said already, it is best to dive in and do the research yourself, as you will find that the story changes depending on who tells it.
It's sort of like asking us to break down the relationships between all sovereign nations on earth. It won't be a pretty or very understandable picture unless you really spend the time to get into it. |

And whatever answer you arrive at now is likely to be out of date a month or two down the line. Nobody knows quite how the new sovereignty changes ( "FozzieSov" ) will shake the box or what will fall out of it - but if it simply trivializes SOV warfare without changing the power balance it will all have been a massive waste of time.

The only Alliance or Coalition that I know of that has any lore related driving factors is Prvoi-Block / CVA. CVA are RPers and they decided to take the Providence region back for the glory of the Amarr empire. They run NRDS space wich is rare in null sec and since they are RPers locked specifically to the Providence region they likely won't expand much beyond the borders of the region.
The Phoebe Freeport Republic is doing more a grassroots effort about null sec sov. You can read up more about them on their reddit page as I don't fully understand what they are doing.
As far as I know all other sov is conquest for the sake of ownership. So the dramas that develop around that are mostly about personalities and people either getting along or not getting along.
Of course there are the Alliance that show up from time to time that are based out of NPC null that roam into Sov null to cause trouble. Most of those Alliances don't stay like that indefinitely Often they grow big enough to start taking sov for themselves. Goons and Test Alliance are two examples of this that come to mind.
Then you have all the renter corps. These are the corps that pay the big power blocks for use of protected space. They are not always directly involved in the dramas they can at times live deep into blue territory where they are safer than in high sec. |

There's also a coalition map here based on the influence map linked above (the creator is on reddit posting weekly updates).
As mentioned earlier it's hard to give an accurate (or fair) breakdown of coalitions in under 10,000 words. A lot of alliances and corps within existing entities have complicated histories and relationships with each other. The verite map doesn't show small alliance holders or those who base from NPC null either, so it's a bit deceptive. The best way to research alliances as a new player might be by your own timezone/preferred playstyle & culture, or more simply by location. Dotlan is also useful for researching regions and alliances, as is eve-who. You'll probably get the most info by monitoring player forums such as reddit or the news sites Ralph mentioned.

As for "what they stand for", "what their goals are", and "what drives them", remember that this is game politics, not real world politics. People group up to have fun with friends, and they don't really pick a stance on any socioeconomic issue or anything like that, so their goals are just playing the game for their own fun. |

People group up to have fun with friends, and they don't really pick a stance on any socioeconomic issue or anything like that, so their goals are just playing the game for their own fun. Er, there are cultural differences between players groups because this is a large and diverse community. Sure, at leadership a lot of people may know each other and interract, but line members will notice massive differences between organisations. Something as basic as language makes some unique, ie Russian, German or French alliances who don't recruit non-speakers.
TEST and BNI are probably the best example of groups who promote particular types of culture (probably in response to each other). TEST are 4chan, 9gag, post 4 inch ascii genital spamlords who delight in being generally terrible and obnoxious. Brave Newbies have a 'no tolerance' attitude to racism, homophobia and sexism. But both are reddit based communities, and both are new player friendly.
To expand a bit: - CVA are roleplayers and operate an NRDS policy (Not Red Don't Shoot It). Breach it and you'll be set red and banned from docking in their stations - Phoebe Freeport Republic, Gorgons and some smaller groups are actively freeporting stations (allowing anyone to dock) - Older alliances like PL/NC. have high recruitment standards, so don't expect to get in without certain levels of SP/competence/a vouch and/or a supercap - Pimperium is harder to define because there are a few distinct alliances within it, but as an entity their strength lies in their logistics backbone, leadership structures and massive blob.
They are all a bit different, and sure they are playing to have fun, and the 'what they stand for' rhetoric is often just noise. But something as basic as whether or not you are a known scammer/awoxer can affect which alliances will let you in, and some players value certain standards of conduct themselves.

The more that I look into it the less difference that I find between in game politics and real world politics. It's to the point that playing this game has literally caused me to re-think everything that I thought I knew and understood about people and cultures and how we interact with each other. |

Very good and comprehensive replies to this so far, some very good information in here. Could someone breakdown the coalitions for me, obviously not expecting a report but generalisations would do the trick. |

Sadly, in my opinion CAOD is dead, so the above two websites serve New Eden well. Reddit.com/eve can also be a treasure-trove of... random information, which albeit random, can be very, very, very useful, even to an older player like myself.
