Good day,
I'm translating the EVE online news and patch notes into russian for eve-online.ru website. While translating the REVELATIONS notes I failed to find an adequate term for RIG.
Can someone, please, explain what is Rig? Because in Russian it can mean lots of quite different things.

It's a ship modification, some would liken it to an implant for ships.
Tech 1 ships have 3 rig slots, while tech 2 only have 2. All ships have 400 calibration points, where calibration points are the fittings (similar to powergrid and cpu) for rigs.
It's great not being Amarr, ain't it? |

Id say it was closer to the 'rigging' of a sailing ship, the 'rig' in that context determined what type of sails and so forth is used. Just as you can 'rig' a sail ship for different conditions so you can also set the 'rigging' of your EVE ship for different performance.
Jury Rigging is an old term for 'fixing' the jury of a court to do as you want.

Originally by: Randomhouse Publishing jury-rig is based on one word "jury" which is a nautical sense meaning 'makeshift; temporary' and one word "rig" referring to a ship's sails and masts. The first known example of this "jury" is the compound jury-mast, 'a temporary mast put up to replace one that has been broken or lost', attested since the early seventeenth century. A jury-rig, then, is 'a temporary or makeshift rigging', and the verb is used figuratively in the sense 'to assemble or arrange hastily in a makeshift manner'. The origin of this word "jury" is not certain, but some scholars identify it with iuwere, a late Middle English word meaning 'help; aid', borrowed from the Old French ajurie.

I think rig is more like "прошивка", since you loose all rigs when you repackage the ship.

Etymology: "Jury-rigged", meaning "assembled in a makeshift manner", is attested since 1788. It comes from "jury mast", a nautical term attested since 1616 for a temporary mast made from any available spar when the mast has broken or been lost overboard. Recent dictionaries suggest that it is probably from Old French ajurie - "help or relief", from the Latin adiutare - "to aid" (the source of the English word 'adjutant').
Using an example, on the Apollo 13 mission (you know, the one Tom Hanks was on ), the lunar module "lifeboat" was only equipped to sustain two people for two days, but was required to sustain three people for four days. One of the most critical problems was that the lithium hydroxide canisters available for the LEM's carbon dioxide scrubbers would not last for all four days. Although the CM had an adequate supply of replacement canisters, they were the wrong shape to fit the LEM's receptacle; an adapter had to be fabricated (jury-rigged) from materials in the spacecraft.
A perfect example of jury-rigging ...and in space too ;)
