I came across this video after falling into that "weird" part of YouTube again. I was about to call it quits and re-search something else when a NationalGeographic video caught my eye with the title of: The Skin Gun. Naturally I said to myself, "Wat." Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXO_ApjKPaI&feature=related
Watching the video, I started to think to myself about how my mother had sustained second degree burns on her left forearm. The only thing the doctors could do about it at the time was do a skin graft from her thigh. So, about half way through the video I stopped and immersed myself in the comment section. I began to read hoping to see the reaction of other individuals on YouTube who were just as unsuspecting as I was to come across this video. Maybe I would have found others who have had family that have suffered burns or even have been burnt themselves and could have benefit from this new technology.
Instead of finding any of that, which I gave up looking for after about two minutes, so I could ferry my ore back to station, I scroll back up to see this comment:
Quote: How does kim kardashan's divorce make the frontn++ page but not this?! Thenuttyboy24
That made me remember back about a few months ago when I read an article on a news site which prompted me to conduct my own research.
Riddle me this: how does crap on the front page, which is (for the most part) completely and utterly worthless to the contribution and preservation of human life, keep reappearing over and over again? Legitimate news such as the significant advancements in medical practice and technology is constantly over looked.
For example. The CURE for that ******* CANCER. Not many people know that there IS a cure for certain cancers. Here is a link and a quote from the website if you're lazy:
http://technorati.com/lifestyle/article/the-cure-for-cancer-has-been/#ixzz1fperpIaM
Quote:The cure was discovered by scientists at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada. The cure uses a dichloroacetate, a simple drug used to treat metabolic disorders. Because it's so simple, it had no side effects and also requires no patent. Therefore, it is relatively cheap (at least in comparison to current cancer treatments) and will actually cure cancer rather than warding it off.
Also because of the fact that it can't be patented, it's hard to make a large profit off of it. Due to this, pharmaceutical companies won't touch it, because it doesn't help their pockets. This is why this discovery isn't being celebrated and making front-page headlines.
Here is where dichloroacetate comes in (another link and a quote): http://www.geeksaresexy.net/2009/04/24/science-is-sexy-the-cure-for-cancer/
Quote:So what can we do to GÇ£cureGÇ¥ cancer? Well essentially cancer forming cells occur naturally in the body of every human over the course of his or her lifetime. Normally these cells either recognize the error and GÇ£commit suicideGÇ¥ (apoptosis) or the immune system notices them and neutralizes them. It is only in the rare instance of a mutation that allows a cell to replicate endlessly AND evade the immune system that cancer can develop. Those seeking to treat the disease can either target cells that are rapidly dividing (this is the strategy behind chemotherapy) or remove tumors once they become large enough to target surgically.
The dichloroacetate causes the cell to "commit suicide" by reactivating the mitochondria that had been shut down in a mutant offspring of a cell. The reactivated mitochondria then proceeds to start the aforementioned process, apoptosis, because now it can finally begin doing something about the signals the nucleolus had been instructing it to do.
Although this isn't the only form of cancer as it is a huge area of disease that humans (and even pet animals) all around the world are struggling to survive.

My point exactly... Celebrity gossip is fun and all, but I don't feel that the things that actually matter when it comes down to the survival of humankind is getting the attention it deserves.
And I never liked the movies or the books. Meh. |

One word : advertisements.
To expand, John Q. Sixpack and his girl, Jane R. Mallgirl don't give a rodent's waste disposal hole's worth of attention to "serious news" but instead can forever engross themselves in brain-dead celebrity scandals and such. Due to that pesky "ratings determine payment" thingy, news companies will almost exclusively broadcast stuff that keeps the largest part of the population glued to the screen and completely neglect just about everything else. Plus, you need next to zero and quite low-level research for a celebrity scandal you can drag on for days, but you'd need a lot of higher-level research just to fact-check a story like the one about the cure for cancer which will only give you a few moments of air time.
Bottom line, as long as ratings determine revenue (or better said, as long as advertisements are the main source of income), you can expect almost exclusively trashy news and not much else. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Contributor_name:Akita_T#Contributions_link_collection |

You realize the semi irony of us discussing this while being on a gaming website no? Not as if our full attention is focused on the betterment of mankind.
Matter of fact whats the difference between "wasting" time playing a game or reading gossip magazines? I might participate in one, but I'm not sure it's all that much better than the later... Though i'd like to think so.

Well, I was recently talking to a hardcore venezuelan communist turned bourgeois here in Panama, and after explaining and detailing to me his adventures during the Iron Wall era as a youth he told me how in Cuba the whole thesis to treat cancer was treating it like a FUNGAL INFECTION ... and proceeded to explain the uses of baking soda against it, and seems at least for some people it worked.
Also guess what type of infections types of dichloroacetate are used for? Fungal ones ... hehe
An odd world, this one we live in, though I don't believe in any of these types of cures, I always look at them with a bit of curiosity, also it's no secret Pharmacological Conglomerates want us to keep sick and keep buying from them. Not hard to extrapolate from that starting point.

It's no secret that there's no evidence of that.
And actually if I was Big Pharma 1 and had a way to prove that Big Pharma 2 makes people sick to sell more, i would take about 10 seconds to denounce Big Pharma 2 to te authorities, and failing that, slander them by any means, so people stopped buying their drugs and began buying mine.
Oh, wait a minute: that's exactly what does Boiron, that French Big Pharma of sugar water... So... no affordable NEx store... no full-fledged Incarna... no new casual content... no new solo content... no new PvE content...-á

The human race loves gossip. Sadly, controversy sells better than real news these days. I can remember Britney's big car-smashing meltdown, and I can tell you exactly where I was during Boobgate (aka the Janet Jackson Superbowl), but I would have to look up Keppler-22b before I could tell you anything signifigant about it. |

The reason why things like this don't get much news coverage is because they tend to be fake/exaggerated. Especially the cure for cancer/"cure for some cancers" one. If a group of scientists had actually developed something that had success rates similar to that of chemo without the side effects, it doesn't matter that there was no advertising etc., there would be enormous amounts of money being piped into more research regarding said cure.
The "Skin Gun" was debunked by a poster above, to give a short summation of that article: The "Skin Gun" apparently sprays stem cells, which are supposed to allow a person with 2nd degree burns (which normally take between 2 - 3 weeks or months to heal, and leave considerable scarring) heal those burns in just four days with zero scarring. Stem cell skin grafts already exist, and they are quite successful (although healing times are similar, there is less scarring). That being said, stem cells have to differentiate into a variety of cells, from hair cells to dermal cells to cartilage etc., which the Skin Gun cannot possibly allow them to do properly.
In other words, as terrible as the major news outlets are for sciencey stuff, they're at least good enough not to make sweeping generalizations about things with extremely limited data supporting it. |

People have been bombbarded with stupid stuff for ages, and so much of it they all get overloaded and have no capacity for any actualy useful information. It is drowned away in a seas of trvial stuff.
Combine that wiht the heavy capitalistic system where good information does not sell as well as quick and hasty gossip and you get a population that is by and large stupid. Well, apparently stupid. Most of us actually got the capacity to be fairly enlightened if effort is exerted.

A wee bit off topic, but i suggest you watch "What if cannabis cured cancer", i stopped watching news and reading papers years ago because its mostly full of biased or distracting crap. Big pharma dont want cures they just want to treat diseases, no real money in a cure. If you search youtube you might find a vid of a guy using cannabis oil topically to cure skin cancer on his nose and cheeks. An other cool vid i watched recently was type B Diabetics being cured in 30 days using a raw food diet. Mail me if you want links |
