Hi-slot defense mod.
Basic idea is that this would be a counter to cloaked ships from being able to sneak up on you and catch you off guard (active player)
The Cluster mine would dispense small mines that react to ships (even cloaked) not in your fleet or have neutral and lower standing. It could ether A) be an active mod that launches more mines as it cycles - it deploys the mines up to 5km from your ship or B) be a player active single cycle mod that would deploy a number of mines that have a short life -10 to 20 minutes- Possibly limited to BS as they tend to be slower less agile hulking beast.
Pros - adds a level of possible defense/early warning to active players Pros - adds a small ISK/mineral sink due to cost of mines
Cons - makes it a little harder for gankers against active players.

Yes. There is a thread for AFK cloaking. When looking at that, thread I didn't feel my idea fit in - due to it requiring active play.

cloaked is cloaked whether afk or not.
besides i'm sure there is a thread on mines somewhere

We use to have mines, they were removed due to the amount of lag they generated when you have 100 people dropping 10 mines a person. |

and if this doesnt render actual gizmos on grid (and thus cause lag) how do you envision this working?
Ie. Convince me why this isnt a terrible idea likes all mines ever and wont cauise the hamsters to go on strike |

Even if they arn't render they will still create lag, because they are objects that the server has to keep track of. The reason why original mines were removed, was because A: they didn't expire, and B, when you have people deploying them, specially if they are a part of a big fleet, these little objects that the server has to keep track of, exponentially grows. lets say you limited the amount of mines that a player can deploy is two. Now lets do some theoretical math here, you have ten people on grid, they now all deploy two mines, that 20 mines that the server has to keep track of... Now lets grow that to 100 people, and they all deploy mines, that 200 new objects the SERVER has to keep track of....
Lets go a step further. lets say there are 1000 people in system, and they all deploy 2 mines.... That now two thousand more objects the server has to keep track of, ontop of other players and objects already in the server... Do you not see how fast this can get out of hand? |

Cloaked ships ARE A THING in this game and that is the way it should be. Cloaked ships serve a purpose and it would be very bad if everyone could simply fit this module thus rendering cloaking obsolete. |

That said, other than being abusable in some kinds of camps and a great anti-tackle/ drone system if done even slightly wrong, OP looks reasonablish.

Your idea would also see much, much more use in gatecamps than in fighting hotdroppers.
A point has longer range than your mines if they have the 5k range you're talking about.
If they have the 50k range you mention, you might as well take the entire concept of a bombing run out behind the shed and give it both barrels.
In the scenario you mention, IE a guy ratting in local after a neut shows up and not actually doing anything useful to protect himself, the ratter deserves everything they get. Why should someone who doesn't see the point in taking active steps to avoid a hotdrop gain what you're essentially describing as a 'no more drops ever!!11' button? |

Perhaps "mines" was the wrong term
I was envisioning something more like chaaf (can't spell) In real life we normally use it to mess up missiles and other things from being able to get a lock on planes or whatever. Most Sci-fi movies and TV use it for those times you have things that go about cloaked up and it is how the "good guys" know where the bad guy is.
My example was pretty bad - at 5k Mac range it would force a cloaked ship back into view at 7.5km. And there are good points to the "why were you not already safe?, topic.
We all know that in its current state -cloaks are probably the most OP mod in the game. Yeah you could use a Smart bomb to give yourself some breathing room. But even that fails - if this "tinfoil sprayer" worked it would ether decloak and/or make lock time terrible for the both players. The whole thought still resides in finding some kind of point defense system to help active players have just one more option then - warp and hide - when a big bad wolf comes to blow them up. And yes putting anything in space in grid will cause more server load - so steps would have to be made to counter that - plus they could just be in active around the players ship until they are "charged" via disrupting a cloak. And thus, a smarter hot dropper would realize this and avoid decloaking due to the chaaf.
I think that might clear up so of the concern.

It'd still be useless for avoiding hotdrops though, since you're still letting the guy get well inside of point range before decloaking him.
Which means that it'd be much more use for catching cloaky guys trying to get out of bubble camps. And gatecamps don't really need a buff like that. |

You make a great point about gate camps. I also didn't want to make it OP so hot droppers couldn't catch their pray. I was just thinking that if I had something like this > I could use it and instead of the guy being 2.5km away I would have maybe a little more reaction time. Specially if it messed up his targeting time.

On the gate camp side - a restriction on use near a gate could be put in place. As in most things - it is the balance of the feature and I know that I generally only see things from one side (as I don't cloak or hot drop)
