I recently built a typhoon with six faction torpedo launchers. I found that I am unable to use any type of longer range torpedoes since they are T2 specific. Thinking of unloading the (better) faction items in favor of having the longer range. Why would I ever use this super expensive crap when it's hardly a match for the T2 stuff? |

Damage application, decent dps, couldn't be arsed training for t2/need to use them right neeeaaaoooooow!... any number of reasons.
That said I generally only ever see them on the odd hilarious carebear shitfit we put out of its misery so I can't actually say any of those reasons qualify as good ones.

Faction weapon systems exist so that impatient new players can rush into ships they are not ready for, and the rest of EVE can find amusement in their inevitable lossmails. |

well faction launchers obviously perform better if you have no use for the T2 ammo (which was the case for heavy missiles for a LONG time)
Nowadays you're better off with T2 |

There was always one niche exception to that rule.
Imperial Navy Tachyon Beams on a Nightmare.
Much easier on your cap, lower CPU req, and T2 Beam crystals were **** anyway.

For a BS, no good reason as far as I know. For an SB, some fits use the lower CPU launchers and faction ammo.

I used CN cruise launchers for a while. Don't remember if that was before some buff to t2 cruise missiles, or if I just never bothered to train for t2 cruise (I still haven't).
CN launchers have a better rate of fire than t2 even with spec 5, but t2 with fury will do more damage overall, but it also has worse application than t1/faction missiles. So using only t1/faction missiles you get the best dps with faction launchers.

I think you just answered yourself in your opening post.
And ftlog, why would you tell people here that you fly with 6 faction launchers? Please tell me you posted with an alt... |

CN Launchers are sometimes used on Golems for fitting reasons.
Asides from that Faction Weapon systems have little to no uses.

T2 Rage/Javelin missiles have worse application than T1/Faction torps. Infact if you don't put in enough module/rigs to increase their application they just perform worse then t1/faction tops.
For example you have 1300 paper dps with rage torps, but your application is terrible so you only deal 650 dps to your target. However, with t1 torps you have 900 paper dps even though your application is still terrible, because t1 torps apply better you deal 700 dps with them.
Which is better?
There's a lot more behind dps than meets the eye. Any dps number you see in your fitting screen or fitting tool is the result of 100% application which is rarely the case.
If you want range just go with cruise missiles.

^^ This is the truth.
T1 can out perform T2. Especially if you have no target painters fitted. You can also take Crash pills to help.

depends, like allways, on what kind of target you are shooting. If its a bs, and depending on how fast its moving, rages hit for full dps. |

Yup. There's actually an easy way to find out. It just takes some eft warrioring. There's an online database of all the npc rats in eve. You take their speed and signature out that into eft. To do this requires creative fitting/implants/boosts to recreate the speed/sig of your target.
Then you just use the dps graph and voila. |
