Can we get the drone interface to be smaller similar to what's been done with the gang interface? Put the shield armour and hull in a line and make icons for whether they're attacking (red target icon), returning (yellow arrow), engaging (yellow target icon) or idle (green question mark)... At the moment having a drone ship is a nightmare when you consider space on your HUD... The gang improvements have helped a lot (I used to keep gang closed all the time, but it's useful now), but we need to get a more concise drone interface! So I propose a number of improvements to the Drone Interface:
Change health to resemble that in new gang interface (one line)
Change the status text to a series of icons
Show health of drones when they are docked with ship
Stack drones with the same health levels (ie 3 at full health "Valkyrie II (3)")
When 'Lauch All' is pressed, launch the most healthy ones first
Make folders seperate so if it's open when out of ship, it can be closed in ship
I think that's it... Any thoughts on this? You can already sort your drones in to folders, but they're not very easy to use... I've thought of another point as well:

Agree, the interface really is the weak link in drone operation.
And 100% agree that we need health indicators of the drones while in the bay. It makes no sense that once they're in the bay we can't tell that one might be on fire and in need of repair.
To solve the above, I created a folder "damaged" and when I'm returning drones, I re-assign any to that group. Helps that I'm in a domi so I can then move some from "reserves" into that particular fight group, but that's another story.

Drones need some lovin' in a coming patch, they're starting to look like the weapon system that time forgot. Every patch they seem to have a tiny bit more of their functionality removed, a few more bugs added, and a distinct lack of any real improvements. I really hope that CCP are considering giving both drone UI and AI a thorough servicing some time soon......... -----------------------------------------------

No matter how much we sign any damn drone thread - we are doomed! Drones havent worked for ages and CCP keeps improving turrets and launchers.
I lost faith - so train anything else than drones

Maybe this has been brought up before but I think quick keys for Drone operation would be good as well. Similar to F1, F2, F3, etc...
I would imagine 4 keys:
Launch Drones
Engage Target
Return and Orbit
Return to Drone Bay
They don't have to be preset keys but mapabale keys would be good enough.

I was going to make a new thread about this, but I guess it kinda fits in here.
CCP needs to totally redesign the Overview. Having targeting, ship commands, overview, gang commands, fleet commands, and drones relegated to one side of the screen is too much. We should be able to move the overview around and change stuff that we need. Right now the overview is realy lacking in customibility, and that needs to change.

Maybe hotkeys that you can tie to certain folders, like 3 max or something, and then like Fely says, 4 keys to do the other commands. ____________________________

I am in agreement that the Drone Interface needs a "Face Lift"
We should be able to customize our overview, move the different sections around the screen as needed. I'm sure that at one time haveing all the info in one spot was very handy, however with so much information on the overview now, with the improvements to gang, I think it is time to start "chopping" up the different sections.

Actually I'd like a much more complex Drone interface that will allow a lot more options and cut down on the Server cycles it takes too.
Because there are a lot of Sub AIs, each can be more specialized and so run quicker. Also it should make them less likely to misbehave: Anyway, for details: Drone Interface
If that isn't feasable, making it take up less space with current functionality is a plus too, just not really the enhancement I'd like to see drones get. --- The Advanced Drone Control Panel. |

It is really a pain to be a drone boat pilot in a gang with the current overview. The available area to monitor is always a compromise between what can attack you, gang members and your drones health / attack status. The single line health bars helped this situation very little with the additional folder headers and buttons added with the new gang interface.
I would be happy with drone folders and right click commands for now if I could just detach the drones from the overview column and move them to their own window.
Maybe even a tabbed overview with default, gang and drone tabs like the chat windows? It would still be a compromise, but a lot easier than spending more time resizing overview areas during a fight, than the effort put into the actual fight.

Absolutely agreed.
These are fantastic suggestions, and would enhance drone functionality greatly. CCP does care about drone captains--the new Gallente Battlecruiser is proof of that. There are enough drone platforms out there that we can't just write off CCP.

I dont basically care what they do to drone ui at this point as long as they do something (current one is more than horrible) :p --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

A simple change would be to make each drone appear as a button above the weapon bottons at the bottom of the HUD. You could then assign them to attack/web/repair whichever target you want them to in the same way you do with guns

I see your point, but that's a small easy to overome problem.
Launch Drone Group XXX
Launch Drone Group YYY
Launch Drone group ZZZ Etc.
This does add more keys but I don't think people would complain about the benefits of having more flexible interface.

I'd also like to be able to undock the drone interface from the overview and place it where I want. Overview is too critical to my operations to have 1/4 of the viewable space taken up by drones and gang.

The lag that comes with opening up a dronebay on a carrier really really needs help.
I have fighters, 1 folder per race, heavy drones, a folder per race, medium drones, repair drones, light drones, ew drones, webber drones etc etc. All in their seperate folders.
With or without folders simply opening up dronebay in overview m...a...k...e...s m...y p...c h...a...v...e a near death experience.. and one of those days, it'll be pure death. [center] ¼+¼ a history |
