I wasn't here for the beginning of EVE, when everything was new, systems were quiet, and space was a player's for the taking.
It'll never happen, but i'd like to see eve for LANs or people running their own servers, a bit like BF2 servers, but with eve instead. you could run around in anything you like, do anything you like, and not see a soul... unless you gang *****0.0 rats with your little group of friends. You'd be king of the universe, and you could get the first BS, first mining barge, and stuff like that.

I never want to see private eve servers. EVER. If you want private MMO servers then try googling Ragnarok Online, and...eh, I dunno any other games with common private servers. I don't play them =X -----

It would be great. Even if it's only 5 systems big. Like a corp/alliance own test server. I think it will never happen but, it would be great. |

Did you read mine? Because it does indeed apply. MMO's aren't FPS's. If you leave an FPS world going it just resets after the game is over. With an MMO you'd essentially be given access to all of the code on your own computer, capable of finding exploits and whatnot. You could also just play on that server instead of the real Eve server, find a way to host it online, and then up the maximum number of players. -----

Like somebody else said, go play on Sisi. The entire universe is yours to do with as you like, because the most people I've ever seen on is about 500. If you want a FFA where ships cost essentially nothing and there's always somebody to shoot, go play in FD-MLJ. ----------

Some people still don't get the idea that the op presented. He said LAN. Like a server where your eve client could login even if you don't have an internet connection. A small server that could be placed in your home so you can have some friends comming over and pvp in LAN party style without the lag, server crashes, etc.
Also note that sisi was never meant for this and it has rulez like no pod killing. |

Just because YOU wouldn't haxploit the server client to be capable of handling more players, or letting them access from online (which would be as easy as going to whatismyip.com and giving it to somebody with a port number), doesn't mean OTHER PEOPLE wouldn't.
It would be done - there's no question about it. -----

By the time this game dies, there will surely be better space mmo's out there with better graphics, content, support, etc......which may be the only reason why eve WOULD die....

I think that worry is pretty exaggerated. After all, just look at the current lag situation, with CCP investing huge amounts of money into the game. Even if you completely hacked it to let you add as many people and systems as you want, how big a universe do you think the average person could host? Just think about it... would YOU want to play a 1000 person MMORPG hosted on someone's old PC?
A non-commercial license would solve that problem neatly. Just come down hard on anyone trying to charge for server access, and nobody can afford to run a dedicated server for more than a handfull of people.
Of course who really cares about it at this point... I just hope when EVE finally comes to an end, they make a release like this for the dedicated fans who want to continue on with private servers.

Would the reach the level that the official server has? No. But a few hundred? Easily. Multiple people hosting eve servers with a few hundred - even a few thousand - would ruin the game. People would quit because half of them don't do it for the gameplay, or the community, half the people out there do it because they like to NPC and chat with friends in their spare time. If suddenly everything was cheaper and they could fit better ships I'm sure they would. I've seen it (and done it) on RO and PSO. It doesn't get boring as fast as most people say, because as long as you have friends to get on with and shiny weapons and names to look at, it's still fun.
Then all that remains on the official servers are elitists, farmers, and macroers. That's something I don't want to happen to Eve. I'm already ecstatic that there's no duping or anything of the sort, let's not bring other crap into consideration. -----

Edited by: Rey Xavier on 04/12/2006 10:39:14 Hm, there is a lot of money involved in developing and maintaining such a game like EvE. Subscriber base is not that huge either so I don't think they could afford free shards. Options I could see would be a FPS (in the future with the upcoming "real" stations/planets ) and a space(battle)-sim based on EVE and it's engine that you could play SP or LAN or on MP-servers like CS (maybe those games could make EVE more popular). Another version could be founding a corp and licensing the engine/game and make a game with a slightly different setting (I for example would so like to see an EVE based in the near future when humanity begins colonisation of space - with real planets and stations and a real avatar and with an ongoing storyline).

If you idiots realised how much advanced hardware and software that you would require, not to mention skills just to get a private server for EVE to boot up then you wouldn't be asking. Just to support 16 people you'd be looking at tens of thousands of dollars just in hardware and thousands of dollars on software licences, primarily SQL Server 2005.
Face it fools, you'll never get a hold of the server code for EVE cos it's CCP's crown jewels and far too sophisticated for one noob who crys, "omg lolz i wants my own eves lolz".
EVE is not BF2. Period. If you wanna gang *****0.0 rats, grow some balls and venture out into 0.0 and rat.

Edited by: Rey Xavier on 04/12/2006 15:07:34 Hmm, anyone knows Nexus - The Jupiter Incident? Such a kind of mix between EVE and Nexus might be a interesting BF2-like EVE-version. NEXUS Unfortunately so far besides Homeworld such projects were financially not too successful.
The char models in the dev blog are IMHO quite impressive. Dev Blog Might bring up thoughts of licensing/developing a FPS where you'd invade stations with special forces teams and such or squad sized battles for planet installations (kind of Flashpoint). ===============================
