I don't get it. A mini-profession is not a mini-profession if everybody can get the skillset in the blink of an eye. Really now, everybody should have mechanic 5 anyway, so one Rank 1 skill (survey) to 5 seems like a very reasonable entry point to me.
Makes you think before leaping, but come on....5 days has everybody in a tizzy???

How does making salvaging easier to do by lowering the pre-req skills dumb it down exactly?
Maybe CCP wants salvaging something that newer players can do too who can't really afford to train survey 5 right off the bat?
I think it's the same case of the tractor beam, handy module but it took too long to train for.. same with the salvage module, its neato but once again, needing a level 5 skill for it seems over the top.. maybe when/if they release a tech II salvage mod they can make survey 5 a pre-req but for a t1 mod like that? Honestly it's too high.. and too few people have survey 5 to begin with which makes it hard for people to salvage wrecks right now.. and slapping new players with having to train it to salvage, also just bad for the game.

This is where we differ. Salvaging was described as a mini-profession. Nobody is making looting unavailable to new players...or players unwilling to spend 5 days training a skill. Exactly how is having the ability to salvage from day one improving the game...or hurting the game assuming you had to train a skill for it?
If you have minimal to no requirements (and L3 skill req's are essentially no req's at all) then don't bother calling it a mini-profession...just get rid of looting altogether and rename it salvaging.
I think it hurts the game because it removes specialization. For all game mechanics that you need to succeed I am happy with the low req's. For everything you should have to dedicate yourself to training it...at least a little. And Rank 1 skills are hardly a huge time investment to gain access to a specialization.

Okay so CCP messed up in describing salvaging, obviously it's not as entailed as hacking, archeology, or whatever else is considered a mini-profession. Letting people salvage with survey 3 vs survey 5 does not exactly rob you of anything when playing EVE.
Salvaging components for rigs seems rather... lengthy so it's probably for the best that survey 3 is all that is needed to do it, that means more players salvaging, and new players having a chance to sell their salvaged components on the market, which is a nice boost for the new players.

Survey 5 should be put back, carebearization of EVE is bad!

Great, i spent the time to train survey to level 5 preparing for salvaging, and now lazy people who don't train skills past level 4 will be competing to get the wrecks, specially when they only seem to drop components in belts not in missions. (if this is a bug, i hope they fix it soon and i will stop complaining)
Maybe they'll lower the skills for the exploration probes next, so new players can enjoy that part of the game too (what is the smiley for sarcasm?), and i won't have to spend 2 weeks training astrometrics to level 5.
To me, a mini profession is something you specialize in and spend time to get it. If a new player likes salvaging, he can spend more time playing eve (past the free trial), and that is something ccp will like.

I've been pure caldari since may 2003 and through all the ups and downs of being caldari so whatever and since when is Survey 5 hardcore?
