It's no secret EVE has a **** ton of skills, and a lot of them aren't as obvious. I'm just back after 2-4+ years off, and was never super advanced (obviously!) anyway, so I'm looking for a sanity check and advice on my skills? Am I missing something very basic that would have a big impact now? Is there anything I should look towards?
I know, I know - have to pick what I want to do first. I'll get there, but right now I've just finished the career agent stuff and will run missions and such for a while. Here's what EVEMon lists for my skills as of right now:

/sigh, apparently EVEMon's "Export to clipboard BB format" isn't the right format for the new EVE forums. :D
And I had to split it to 2 posts. Oh well. I'm sure it's pretty obvious what's what.
Any advice/etc appreciated! |

Instead of posting skills like this, may I suggest creating a limited API with just access to your skill stuff, and posting a link to it on www.eveboard.com, a website hosted by Chribba that we typically use to show characters to each other?
At a first glance, there are several skills in the Armor and the Shield categories that deal with damage resistances and the ability to install shield hardeners or armor hardeners. Pretty handy to have, in addition to the straight up repair skills that you've trained. The skills have names like "armor kinetic compensation" etc.
Going by the ships you have trained for, you're missing the bigger Hybrid guns training to fit the various Caldari cruisers and battlecruisers. You can go with just missiles, but you should train the medium hybrids too, just in case.
As you advance your skills, consider training the support skills (Armor, Shields, Navigation, Targeting, etc) to 4, as that will unlock Tech 2 modules for you. Then consider training for Tech 2 weaponry, which is a long train due to multiple prerequisites, but pays off in terms of damage dealt.
Also consider training the overheating skills (Thermodynamics + 2 more skills I forget), some basic Leadership skills so you can offer bonuses if you ever fleet up with others, and Anchoring / Starbase Defense Management under the Corporations category so you can defend a POS if necessary. |

Kick ASS. I didn't know about this service; done.

Hmm - probably good advice. I think I'll finish getting able to fly CovOps frigs first and then take that advice.

To be hojnest without knowing the ships / fits that you ly and what you fly them for it is hard to give anything but the most basic and general advice. In that way here is a core skills list we often use, nothing special and intended as a general guideline only.
Level 4 on all unless level 5 is needed as a pre-req for something else.
**** Basics **** - good skills for every pilot Advanced Weapons Upgrades - engineering Hull Upgrades -armor Mechanics - armor CPU Management - engineering Capacitor Management - engineering Capacitor Systems Operation - engineering Power Grid Management - engineering Weapons Upgrades - engineering
**** Armor **** - if you fly armor tanked ships Armor Layering Armor Resistance Phasing EM Armor Compensation Explosive Armor Compensation Kinetic Armor Compensation Themic Armor Compensation Repair Systems
**** Drones **** - required for drones pilots, good to have for everyone else Drones Drone Avionics Drone Durability Drone Interfacing Drone Navigation Drone Sharpshooting Light Drone Operation Medium Drone Operation Heavy Drone Operation - Optional many never use heavies
**** Optional Drones Skills **** Sentry Drone Interfacing Amarr Drone Specialization Caldari Drone Specialization Gallente Drone Specialization Minmatar Drone Specialization Repair Drone Operation Salvage Drone Operation - needed to use salvage drones Mining Drone Operation - needed to use mining drones Advanced Drone Avionics
**** Electronic Systems **** Many of these skills can be considered requirements but which ones you need depend on the ships you fly and what you want to do in the game.
**** Engineering **** - skills for everyone Advanced Weapons Upgrades Electronics Upgrades Energy Grid Upgrades Nanite Operation - for armor tank pilots or those that use nanite paste Thermodynamics
**** Gunnery **** - for those using turret based weapons only Gunnery Controlled Bursts Motion Prediction Rapid Firing Sharpshooter Surgical Strike Trajectory Analysis
**** Missiles **** - for those using missiles, rockets or torpedoes only Missile Bombardment Missile Launcher Operation Missile Projection Rapid Launch Target Navigation Prediction Warhead Upgrades

BTW - are skill book prices fixed, or do they vary? Some of the higher tier skills are reallllly pricey, and I was wondering if it's possible to find them cheaper. |

It depends on the skill. Most skill books can be bought from NPCs at stations in the newbie systems for a fixed price, but some can only be found through exploration, bought for Loyalty Points or, I believe, in some combat missions. |

Posting all your skills on a website anyone can read doesn't seem like a good military tactic to me.
@op
First thing I'd do is open the character sheet and on the skills sheet change the option to all skills. That will show you all the skills available in-game. Then it's just a case of looking at which ones you don't have and make a list of those that are likely to be useful to you.
Without knowing exactly what you want to do it's difficult to say what you need. |

Looking at the skills you have trained, I think it'll be awhile before you get to the real expensive skill books. |

As pilot skills go, the OP seems to be doing okay.
For what it is worth: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=5606050#post5606050
If you like to do missions, you might consider Connections 3, so you can quickly accept level 2 missions.
On skill books, look for NPC sell orders. They are easy to spot, as they always have a duration >90 days (typically >360). Players can only create orders with a max duration of 90 days.
Of course, some players resell books at a mark-up for the convenience of moving them. There are only a few skill books that cannot be obtained from NPC sell orders. |

There is a decent amount of good advice on t his thread but the best advice is given by yourself.
I know that you want to get on track with a good skill plan but honestly your time would be better spent figuring out what you like first. You can't really come up with a good skill plan until you know what you like.
So play around with a lot of different aspects of the game and when you find stuff you like train for that. |

Signature Analysis 5 (at least 4), Thermodynamics ~4, you're missing all the social skills to do missions including security connections. Thermodynamics is probably the glaring problem, you cant overheat racks nor use nanite paste. It's more pvp, but sometimes called for in pve to save a ship such as to shield rep/resist with enough time to warp so you can come back for a better grid spot. Or enough time to take out the rat pointing you so you can even warp at all.
I'd either train gunnery or missiles, not both yet (you don't have too much in gunnery anyway). Caldari ships for serious missions I'd go missiles right up to battleships (in time anyway).
Attributes, I'd evenly max perception and intelligence if you are going to focus on combat.
You mentioned cov-ops, which? Missions + Cov-ops = bomber, primarily FW. It's easier to make suggestions if knowing what ships you are aiming for and for what. Different common fits take different skill plans as EVE training isn't vertical. Or to know what you really want to get into doing more specifically. http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/

Not looked at everything yet but a couple things.
I advise training Power Grid Management and CPU Management to 5 in the fairly short term.
Training to 5 is inherently only about 18% as efficient as training to 4 (going from 4 to 5 provides the same boost usually as 3 to 4 does, but takes sqrt(32) = 5.6 times as long).
However, PG Management and CPU Management provide such enormous bonuses that they are more than 5.6 times as effective (per level) as other skills. In addition they apply to absolutely every ship you ever fly that can fit modules. So while I generally agree with the 'don't train anything to 5 just for stats, only if it is a prereq', these two skills are major exceptions.
Less important (this can wait 3 months) - the skill Weapon Upgrades is another to get to 5 early. Not so much for its own bonus (which is significant, but rank 4 is more important than rank 5 - I'd get rank 4 tomorrow), but because it unlocks Advanced Weapon Upgrades which can be quickly trained to 3.
Your shield tanking skills should already allow you to fit a tech 2 tank. This is an excellent starting point.

Good advice, all - and it's much appreciated.
I have another thread in the ships and modules subforum, as I've realized over the last couple of days, I really like using drones, so I was asking over there about drone ships.
As far as my skills be nearly all combat ones - well, when I started back in 06 I thought combat was all there was! (LOL!) So yeah, I went allll combat early on. |

Granted, OP said he's interested in PVE, but still:
1. If posting brings more pewpew, that's more entertainment out of this game. 2. Tactical decisions are primarily based on what ship he's flying as it appears on scanner or in the overview. 3. If ship info isn't sufficient, most people look at character info - what corp/alliance he's in, and how old his character is, and will assume fully trained perfectly chosen range of PVP skills anyway.

Eh, AFAIK, there's nothing so secret in EVE as far as skilling up that there's any tactical benefit from hiding what skills a toon has.
Like another poster said, people will look at your ship and probably assume a worst-case that you've got all skills that benefit that ship trained to V. There are no "secret" skills...

There are things that secret in EVE.
Your skillsheet isn't one of them.
Your intentions - however - they are often much more relevant than the opponent correctly knowing you have Surgical Strike 3 and not the Surgical Strike 4 they thought.

eh yes and no. EVE can be very rock, paper, scissors as far as for pvp. It's probably more a concern if someone decides to hunt you. But more the problem of the lazy as intel can be gleaned through other means. But generally no, it doesn't matter. I'm more concerned about anyone knowing what fleets I have and where.

I'll also suggest Thermodynamics V as a priority. Being able to overheat for longer has saved many, many ships for me in PvP, I'd imagine it would have it's uses in PvE too (especially when treated to EVE's own brand of Surprise PvP!).
Stick at it, work out a skillplan and don't try and fly everything all at once. This game rewards focus on skilltraining.
Time spent in core navigation and engineering skills is never time wasted.

As much as I encourage people to train Thermodynamics, I don't consider level 5 important at all.
In the same way that Logistics is an extremely back-loaded skill (the 5th rank does much more than any earlier rank of it), Thermo is front-loaded. With the mechanics of overheating as they are, you don't even get close to the 5% extra time per level that you might expect.
Thermo 5 isn't wasted SP but I put it a long way down the list (I do not have it on this character yet).

I agree with this - for most fights, particularly in smaller ships, the fight will be over long before an extra 5% of overheating time will make a difference.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. So, why do I post here?
I'm stubborn.

Yeah I put thermo at ~4, good to have five but really something later down the line as it's less important than other skills at 5. I'd far more recommend Signature Analysis 5 over Thermodynamics 5 in the short-term. Even long range targeting I'd put above Thermo 5.

I agree with these but would put all of those skills (Sig Anal 5, LRT 5) into the list to train in your second year.

I agree with these but would put all of those skills (Sig Anal 5, LRT 5) into the list to train in your second year. Long range targeting and signature analysis 5 have conditional statements. 1. Are you Caldari 2. Do you pvp vs pvp fit ships 3. Do you shoot rats in Caldari space 4. Do you plan to ECM (target jamming)
If all 4 are true, then the two skills are high on the list.
If it's 2, sig analysis is important. If just 1 and 3 then sig analysis is important still and probably something good to have at around four months. Even if just missioning, Caldari mission rats are seriously annoying, primarily the little jammers. On lvl4 missions it's pretty common to get jammed, and often come at you in pairs. That means even if you get one by the time they jam you, likely you'll be jammed up by the second before you can take that one out. If you miss the first one, it's even worse, can seem almost like a perma-jam. But you can break that usually with drones to target. However, every moment counts when locking them so you can set your drones on them and maybe get a volley in on them as well. It's just the price Caldari pay for being Caldari and in Caldari empire space. lvl3's aren't too bad, but still annoying.
As for long range targeting 5, yeah later, unless going ECM or one of the Caldari sniping fit boats. But still more important than thermo 5 which was my point.

Oh I'd get both to 4 in short order as they are good skills, IMO 5 can wait until a lot more important stuff is done first.
Also there's less difference between your frigate locking hostile player frigates in 2200ms (Sig Anal 4) and 2300ms (Sig Anal 5) than there is between your battleship locking hostile player frigates in 12000ms and 12600ms.
The larger the ships you fly the more Sig Anal helps.

OP, I purposely responded to you in a somewhat vague manner on purpose, as you are doing fine on your own!
Sure, consider the ideas and suggestions put forth in this thread, but really, just keep doing whatever feels right for you. |

The larger the ships you fly the more Sig Anal helps. Well if he does pve and into lvl4's, maybe even by lvl3's, he'll figure it out. I give it roughly four months (as I mentioned), if going that rout anyway. Definitely not second year. All the jamming is very annoying, especially on some lvl4 missions where you may only have 2 seconds between locks for drone commands while you may be overheating shields and no way to warp directly out. That 5% faster lock can make a lot of difference there if you're not running a crazy tank sacrificing speed and damage. imo depending on the skill plan, the 4 days to go from Sig analysis 4 to 5 is a considerable difference.
Then of course if doing pvp, pretty much mandatory (where you get fired back at anyway). Mining or hauling etc, wouldn't notice if ever trained up. But for a combat pilot, how fast you lock is even more important than how many you can lock. Targeting is quite important, here's a primer: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Targeting

Well, I queued up CPU and PG Management to V, and used a bonus remap to make it take many days less time. :D
Not sure where next, still mulling over what I want to make better first.
