I'm going to be engaging in an activity that has me bouncing back and forth between high-sec / low-sec in empire space. I have never been to null-sec, and barely in low-sec.
My intention is to use a blockade runner fit for align time. (And extra warp-speed, if possible.) I will also be using a CovOps cloak.
The main fear I am developing is the fear of ending up within 2km when I land on the low-sec side of a gate. How often does this generally happen? Is a blockade-runner + properly-used CovOps cloak a pretty hefty insurance policy that I'll get through most camps?
To help minimize risk, I am going to attempt the following: - Try to constrain high->low jumps to immediately after daily downtime - Check dotlan and other resources to get a feel for how busy / dangerous the system has been
Any and all advice most appreciated!

Hi there, intrepid new lowsec hauler!
You obviously did your research and you also seem to have a healthy level of paranoia.
Verdict: you'll be fine!
Longer answer:
. BR + covops cloak is already 99% safe; fitting for align time is a further excellent safety boost
. you need to be VERY unlucky to land <2km from something. however, **** happens. you could fit 1 or 2 warp stabs as extra protection
. if you fly in immediately after downtime, you have a good chance of getting through alive even in a freighter! seriously, it's extremely improbable, borderline impossible, that you'll find a gate camp immediately after dt. you could easily find one just before dt though (merry pirates 'finishing off the night'), so be careful
. you COULD fit also a MWD to either 1) burn away from anything that's decloaking you or 2) try to burn back to gate, but a decent gatecamp will get you every time if you try this. some people also use an MWD to make it harder for 'ceptors to try to decloak you (hit warp + covops cloak + mwd) but I don't find it necessary in lowsec. quick align time (3 or 4 seconds max, with a covops cloak) is enough imo

Extra advice #1: be careful with the cloak module. It won't activate until the server understands you're moving and breaking gate cloak (e.g. warping to something). This usually requires 1 second or so. You'll immediately see a message 'your cloak doesn't activate cuz you're already cloaked'. If this happens, wait half a second and attempt to activate again. DO NOT spam cloak cuz you'd just eventually activate it and then immediately de-activate it yourself! It's not hard, but IMO this is actually the only thing that can get you killed, so practice a bit in highsec first.
Extra advice #2: learn to make insta-docks and insta-undocks at stations. Or else a fast-locking high-alpha ship (e.g. tornado) could get lucky and pop you. People try this in Jita as well. With proper instas, you're effectively INVULNERABLE in high/lowsec while docking and undocking.

If you warp to a gate and are < 2km when you land, that's ideal to jump.
When you go through the gate, you always spawn 12 km from it.
If you warp to a gate and are > 2km when you land, you coast for a second or two while cloaked and jump. This is fairly uncommon, but does happen.
It is far more common to press the cloak button after breaking gate-cloak, and either nothing happens, or you are told it cannot be engaged yet. One has to expect to double-tap the cloak button, but not get into the habit of actually doing that unless needed. |

Nobody paid me any attention and I warped away.
I think what's he referring to is having some object within 2 km of you after you jump through a gate, thereby preventing you from engaging your cloak as you prepare to warp to the next gate. From what I understand, it's not unheard of for some gate camps to litter the area with cans and other deployables for exactly this reason. The OP has likely heard the same and is wondering how common that really is.

In general gate camps are very rare.

Smartbombs tend to be a much bigger threat than random objects decloaking you around gates. Be sure to fit a moderate buffer tank to make sure you don't get onevolleyd by couple discomegas. You can also d-scan the gate before you warp, if you're suspicious of a potential threat(crim flags in local, etc).
Flew tons in losec with BRs, got decloaked by wrecks maybe 5 times (out of some thousands of jumps), never died.

Yes, I realize I left out the phrase '... from any object that decloaks me.' That's exactly what the 2km was a reference to, and you did an amazing job of seeing through my typo to the point I was asking about. Thanks!

A blockade runner should only ever die to a very well set up gatecamp, or pilot derp.
If you're carrying something valuable, get scouted by a mate (or alt) in a <2s align interceptor.

Checking in as someone who often uses a Blockade Runner in low-sec.
- gate camps are usually on the most often traveled routes. Find the "back ways" and you will almost never run into a gate camp.
- start with fitting your BR (Blockade Runner) for align time, survivability, and warp core stabs. Get a feel for things. Eventually you will feel comfortable enough to fit lots of cargohold expanders.
- it is rare that you will land far enough from a gate that you decloak but can't jump through. For this reason, always fit a MWD (MircowarpDrive).
- the trickiest part about using a BR is activating the cloak at just the right time. This takes practice and knowledge of how the server functions (hint: the server runs at a rate of 1 Hz... which means it accepts, processes, and sends out the result of the last action you gave your ship to do once per second). Generally speaking... don't try activating your cloak until right after you hear the "Warp Drive Activated" audio. And DO NOT spam the cloaking command. "Bad things" will happen when you do that.

I assume from what you say that you are not going into null-sec: that has a whole different set of issues.
For what you are doing, the biggest danger as people have said is the cloak failing to activate. The routine to follow (I always have the cloak in high slot #4 which I rebind to F4)
Activate jump or warp to command Press F4 Look at the screen where messages appear If no message pops up, you are good If a message appears saying your cloak has not activated, press F4 a 2nd time - but no more or you will deactivate it again!
It seems oh-so simple, but when the adrenaline is flowing the your fingers start doing silly things. So, go somewhere safe and practise it over and over until the sequence and the timing become second nature. This also goes for other procedures that you'll need as you progress into more exciting and dangerous activities. Good luck!
(PS. Nothing in EVE is ever 100% reliable. It will screw up sooner or later. Don't worry about it.)

My alt's BR is fit for max cargo and I've only ever lost 3. One was to a resebo'd insta loki and the others to dictor pilots that were good at what they did. You will be fine. |

its not rare, tama and plenty of lowsec systems are riddled with pirate gatecamps with instalocking frigates and logi, we use to leave the wrecks of ships at gatecamps to help with the decloaking of ships

For what it is worth, every single Blockade Runner my alts and I have ever killed was fitted for maximum cargo space (even though almost all of them were empty). Refitting for agility and faster acceleration would definitely have helped them.

Lots of good information on how to fit and fly your ship, and you've already pointed out the map resources available. You are well on your way, but I'd like to point out a few additional things:
1. Nothing beats a scout. Friends are best, alts are good. Even if it's just you keeping a cheap, quickly-aligning frigate in your hisec border system to jump through and get eyes on the gate, that provides solid, real-time intel.
2. If you plan to operate out of a losec station, be absolutely sure that you make good insta-undock and insta-dock bookmarks for that station. The only time I've ever lost a blockade runner was when I landed at a station out of dock range and got insta-popped.
3. Be extra careful at POCOs. You'll be distracted and at an object that is publicly warp-able.
Good hunting.

if you are going to be in the same area most of the time you can always create tactical bookmarks that are greater than 150km from the gate (and usually out of alignment with celestial bodies), you you can warp to them instead of the gate, then warp down to the gate. Should protect you from smartbombs.
also depending on the camp and which BR you are flying if you run into space junk that won't let you cloak it might be best to MWD back to the gate. nano prowler hits 4km/s with a heated MWD. the others look to be more in the 3k area. Other times MWD out into space and hope you can cloak in the next server tick.
And I will double down on the make sure you have station insta dock and undock bookmarks. landing off a station with a bunch of hostiles on grid isn't a fun second or two.
