So I'm doing lvl 2 missions in my low-skilled passive tanked Caracal, and I start Tech Secrets 3/3.
A couple of stabbers show up. I can't use heavies yet, so when the stabbers decide to maintain range at 30km, my assaults can't touch them. Irritating.
So I go back, slap on a 10mn AB, and try again. They match my speed and I can't get any closer.
I swap out a BCU for a nanofiber. Now I'm moving about 40m/s faster than they are. Unfortunately, I had to drop one of my three LSEs to fit the AB, and by the time I close to within 20km, they've chewed through my shields and I get a single volley of light missiles off before warping out.
I gimp my setup a bit more to fit a MWD. Aura verbally abuses me when I try to activate it in the deadspace pocket.
I'm getting mad. At this point I have three options.
1) Call a friend/corpie 2) Train heavies 3) Transform my Caracal into a speed demon
I have neither corp nor friends and I'm having just a totally awesome time training up the prerequisites for Research Project Management and I don't want to give TWO ******* NPC CRUISERS the satisfaction of making me train skills before I really need them. Bastards.
Having exhausted all other possibilities, I opt for an active tank, put RCUs in my low slots, and fit a 100mn AB. I forget to add the shield booster.
I warp in, see that I have no shield booster, but decide to try anyway. I have three active hardeners, that should give me some time.
AB on, I'm approaching the stabbers. Slowly. For some reason (I hadn't considered the side effects of an oversized module), I'm accelerating REALLY slowly. By the time I get to max speed my shields are hurting, and by the time I actually REACH the stabbers, my shields are curled up in a fetal position bawling.
I loose a few volleys of spleen missiles and tell my Caracal to warp out with maybe 10% shield remaining.
When an oversized afterburner is active on your ship, your acceleration stays about the same, which means your acceleration relative to your max speed drops atrociously.
Now knowing this, I turn off the AB, and realize something else that I had known, but had temporarily forgotten.
When entering warp, it takes longer to DEACCELERATE than to ACCELERATE.
It was a T1 fitted Caracal, so even for my malnourished wallet it was no big deal. But I thought I should warn any other noobs who think it might be a cool idea that:
The concept of fitting an oversized module for any PVP or PVE situation does not originate from the thinky parts of your brainmeats but from SATAN HIMSELF and if you actually DO it, HE WILL ******* TAKE YOU DOWN
ALL THE WAY DOWN
TOWN.
And I hate Republic Fleet Stabbers more than lag, logoffskis, and wearing blinders combined. Seriously, I've PVP'd in 0.0 and never gotten too mad, I seem to be able to handle annoying people but NPCS ARE UNFORGIVEABLE. KILL THEM.
I'm going to go play UT to release my frustrations, and then roll katamaris until I feel clean again.
But I'll be back. Yes, I'll always come back to this filthy place. Sigh.

Protip for Tech Secrets 3/3
Fly up next to the stabbers as quick as you can. Drop a Bookmark. Leave, Warp to 0 on the bookmark. Bam you are right on top of them.
Or
Drop a jet can, bookmark it. Fly away from the can so the stabbers follow you towards the can. When they hit the can, warp to it, now you are right on top of them

Originally by: Reclamation When an oversized afterburner is active on your ship, your acceleration stays about the same, which means your acceleration relative to your max speed drops atrociously.
Frigs masses vary from less than 1m to 2m. Cruisers are from 10m to 20m and battleships from 100m to 200m. The base mass is used by the game to determine boost speed and base ship inertia. Inertia depents on ship class. For example around 1m frig is the most agile, 2m frig is least agile. Same for the cruisers - 10m one is the most agile, 20m one least.
Now let's get to the point... It is that the AB and MWD devices have a parameter, "mass addition". This parameter is added to the mass of ship in the duration of AB being active, for the purposes of inertia only. So if a 1m mass frig fits 1mn AB then when it turns on its AB its agility changes to that of a 1.5m mass frigate. And so on.
So you see, a frig fitting cruiser AB will have its mass increase by 5 m. That means that basically the agility increases not by about 50%, as it happens with properly sizzed AB, but by about 500%. Which means that it becomes similar to freighter's. It takes forever to accelerate and you can only move in straight lines. Maybe a bit exaggerated but close to the truth :)

dunno what you mean by that but yeah turning on AB before warp is extremely silly. If anything, you should turn it off before warping because AB makes aligning longer (due to agility decrease) and accelerates longer as well.. If you get lucky, it will deactivate the moment you have aligned, then your speed becomes over the maximum which insta warps you.

I fail to see why you think a 10MN AB is oversized for a caracal? It's a cruiser sized AB...

Or do the mission in a Rifter. I had no problem doing this mission w/ a rifter doing 850/ms and only had 600k ish skills (if that even). I know that when I moved to a Cara one of the first things I did was get Heavy Missles.

He didn't. You think he did, but he didn't.
He thought a 100mn was oversized. Which it is.

you said that you didnt want to give npc's the satisfaction of forcing you to train a skill before you needed it. well, lot me make something very very clear to you and anyone else that thinks this way. you needed that skill yesterday. youre flying missions, and flying a caracal, GO GET THE FRIGGIN HEAVY MISSILE SKILLS!!!!!!!! DO IT NOW!!!!! research project management skills can wait a few days, cause if you dont even have the skills to shoot big missiles, youve got no business researching anything.
good luck on that missions though, those stabbers can be tough

To the OP - fitting the MWD didn't gimp your setup. Your setup was already gimped.

Edited by: Akita T on 08/12/2006 09:47:34 Well, nice hillarious story, also good advice against "oversized speedboosters". But other than that...
I don't get it, I was ALWAYS doing the L2 missions, including the L2 version of this one with Assault Launchers (so light missiles, there's much more frigs that anything else, heavies would be nasty) LAUNCHED FROM A FEROX without any ABs whatsoever (just 4 nanos), so I guess you have next to no skills in "missile extra range" and a low Caldari cruiser level if you can't match the range of my Ferox lights in your Caracal.
Train a few levels of missile projection and missile bombardment instead of heavies, heavy missiles in L2 missions are next to useless. And move into a Ferox or Drake as soon as possible anyway. _ My skills | Mod/Rig stacknerfing explained |

I am also running Lvl 2's in my caracal, and I don't even move in that mission (or almost any mission for that matter!) just train 1 or 2 missile range skills a little more. I don't have any of them trained past level 3 (wich doesn't take long), and caldari cruiser to 3 too, because I think it gives a speed bonus to missiles. Lvl 2's are anoyingly easy in a t1 non named fitted ferox.
BTW my light missile range is around 32 km.

Wow.. did it make you feel good and superior? So someone who wants to be a researcher, can't be that before he can shoot heavy missiles.Oh, and you need to be able to fire large projectile guns before even thinking about beeing a miner.

Quote: # Using an Afterburner or a MicroWarpDrive that has a thrust bigger than the mass of your ship will not work as well as before. A ship fitted with too large a module will take longer to climb to maximum velocity and maneuverability will decrease.
You will find that in this patchnotes about 15 patches ago right after Exodus which was released back around Nov. 2004

Yes before that patch you could put any afterburner on a frig or a cruiser that your set up could handle. It was a blast. I used to fly a Crow with a 10MN afterburner on it and do level 3 missions. As long as you paid attention you were ok but if you got careless it was time for a new ship. It was also a lot quicker to loot, as the Crow moved around a lot better to pick stuff up. Your best bet is train heavy missles these days though. Good luck.
