Fleet warps look cool. Formations look cool. Formations landing somewhere looks even cooler. Formations all the time wouldn't work, that would be dumb. But formations in warp. That would be cool. Formations good. Warp good. Fleet warp, take cool looking formation, land in formation like a boss. It's so simple. You know you want it. Don't even be like "blah blah blah rabble rabble", all like it's not awesome. You can't argue this.
If I was like, "Hey let's have formations all the time" you could be like "that is a legitimately stupid idea." But in warp, now that... that would be awesome. Especially if you can set between a few formations or no formation in fleet options.
There's obviously some kind of sorting going on already, but it's like, just a dumb ball. That's not a formation, that's a ball. And it's unacceptable. We have to stand up, together, and demand... warp formations. FFS I've been putting alright suggestions in here for years. Okay some of them were ridiculous in retrospect, but this would be spectacular and probably not that hard to implement. Imagine the screenshots. Wow. So desirable. Get hype. <3 <3 GÖÑ |

Formations in warp would be the same as formations all the time.
The sorting you are seeing is everyone headed to the same point at their own speeds and with their own turn radius.
It might be cool if in addition to keep at range we had the option of 'hold formation' with some formations available through the fleet window.
That could get pretty complex pretty quick, but I would imagine the same kind of code used in the probe formations would work, and even allow the creation of custom formations that you could assign at each level of the fleet hierarchy. |

Nooooooooo just during the fleet warp process. You can't really gather people up any other time without otherwise controlling them. It's like, the only time it would be appropriate to implement formations.
Mike Voidstar wrote:The sorting you are seeing is everyone headed to the same point at their own speeds and with their own turn radius.
Nuh uh it's like, when you're partway through the warp sometimes people will all just regroup into a more ball like shape probably so they all land on the destination reasonably close to each other. It's so boring. So so boring.

I think repositioning people into a predetermined pattern during the warp process is more feasible and desirable. Particularly sorted by size. Then it'll be like in the movies when BOOM PHALANX OF SHIPS ZOOMS/SPLASHES IN. EPIC
Seriously I'm envisioning it now it'd be so amazing, especially with the way you can see people pop in now with the flash and sound. And it could be that way. All the time. And EVE would be better for it.

Yes, probe formations good. We love probe formations. Let's have fleet warp formations. But only during fleet warp. That's basically the only to have it without really changing the game as it is. |

I always thought it would be cool to have fleet formations saved like the fleets hierarchy.
Standard formation: DPS lands in the front and Logistics lands in the back!
Triage formation: Carrier class ships land in the middle of the fleet!
Super Capital formation: Titans and Super Carriers are greatly more spread out in the formation so when they land they don't bounce.

Yasssss I mean it can risk people not landing in jump range or colliding with obstacles, but that happens anyways and its up to people to use the tools intelligently. |

Yeah but that don't mean we can't do it in style when we do it |

i do like this idea, as a refinement of yours, Aphox.

Why do you want EVERY ship in your fleet slowed downed to the warp speed of the slowest just to have a formation because they MIGHT look cool?
I do not know about you folks but the FC I fly with count on having ships arrive at different times and use that to our advantage. This formations thingy would destroy that ability. So overall I have to say No to this idea.

Sometimes it is preferable to have everyone land together, it makes it more difficult to call primaries and gives less time to prepare. Also fleet warp helps prevent stragglers from getting caught and the fleet doesn't get broken up when fleeing. There are a lot of bad times to use fleet warps but it is hardly a useless mechanic.
Also, this proposal does nothing to change the actual function of fleet warp. |

you know, if a fleet enters warp at the exact same time (such as if everyone is aligned) they already slow to the speed of the slowest ship?
how do we make faster ships arrive ahead of the fleet currently? they warp themselves, that's how.

Interesting, never experienced this. Not saying it does not happen but I have never experienced it. |

get a friend in a BS, and yourself in a frigate. both align to the same point. when you're both up to speed, initiate a squad warp. check your speed while in warp against your friend in the BS. you'll match his speed.
it's hell when you're in warp with a freighter

Never tried with frigates so I will have to do that.

you may land just before the battleship, due to warp deceleration? that'll be my guess.
if you're in the fleet warp with a battleship or something though, you'll slow to their speed.
