Seriously--what's so great about it? A Merlin has higher resists. What tactical advantage is there to a Hookbill that I'm missing?

It gets a bonus to resists per Caldari Frigate level, 5% to all I think. They can get pretty decent resists on them.

Nope, Merlin gets the resists bonus. Hookbill gets: "Caldari Frigate Skill Bonus: 10% bonus to Shield capacity and 10% bonus to Small Hybrid Turret optimal range per level"

In response to EveTV: Actually, same number of mid slots as a Merlin, though it does have an extra low slot. Thanks for pointing me to that fact, though. I think that's what people are doing--they're armor-tanking them and putting four damps on. Personally, I would have just stuck with Mauluses, but I can at least now understand why they're choosing Hookbills over Merlins.
Oh--and you pronounced my name correctly! Teach my corpmates.

Its tank bonus is also superior- 50% HP at level 5 (no stacking penalty) beats 25% resists at level 5 (with stacking penalty) unless I'm much mistaken. -----------------------------------------------

True, but what was throwing me off was the fact that every team I had seen fielding the Hookbills had also been running remote reps. So if you're receiving remote reps, a resists bonus is better than a HP bonus.

By looking at the stats it just is a special merlin. Its got a bonus to Shield HP and its got 4 mid slots. That's why its being used so much. --- Eve Database | TQ Server Status Coldfront Come in and feel the chill |

If the remote boost mod give more hp than the ship has per cycle the extra resists are wasted. Also the larger HP increase give you a bit more time to put that booster on him before he pops.

It had an extra low and a lot more PG. You can fit a plate, 2x EANM IIs and 4 damps. Its higher scan res means it can lock faster than a maulus too.

Great Explanation Shin Ra! I think this gives everyone an idea of the type of fitting everyone is using on the Hookbill.

...and unless you actually fit shield boosters on it, the shield HP amount bonus is better.
It's only drawback is 25 less CPU. - EVE is sick. |

You are very much mistaken. 25% = which means 75% of full damage taken which is really a 33% bonus to damage "repeating". because it's 1/.75. Also there is no stacking penalty of resistance bonus. Hardeners will technically add less resistance, but in the end it'll still be same % of damage it will take off. 1 hardener will still halve the damage taken for that type of damage taken. The bonus to HP still does come out on top for a passive though. and it has higher base shields and extra low slot make it superior. Though the lack of insurance would make me get a Raven instead "factoring insurance Ravens are even cheaper then drakes". __________________________ Why babelfish is bad mmm k "which the night do not expect that it calls the primary education before becoming deformed inside" |

It also has high base armor which is nice with a plate and a slave set (2.8k with LG and 400mm Rolled). Can also fit 2 rails and 2 rocket launchers which work for downing drones. ---
